    Man this would've been a lot easier if I'd watched this video BEFORE digging into a steering box! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!!

    You were the only person who disassembled completely and knowledgeably. I am doing two at the moment and need to see the rebuild with new kit. I watched many and they were mostly replacing. Thank you. Joe

    These box's rarely leak. The main problem is shaft play at pit man arm, and play at steering wheel. Thank you for going all the way to bearing replacement.And worm gear. Where did they kit come from. One complete with all bearings, not just seals. Very good work. It takes time and much thought to make these videos. Top notch work going on here. Thanks.

    I love it when I see these videos when the pitman arm is removed an go straits to the retainer clip...most jobs I've done there is a pressed washer so you have to remove the shaft because of it

    Thanks, great video! Im at the same point in rebuilding by box as you are at the end of this video, (empty case). You have been really helpfull... Now I just need to figure out where the 9 or 10 O-rings go in the master rebuild kit. some are obvious, others...not so much.

    Any ideas on removing the ball pressed into the fluid passage? Want to tap a box for hydro assist, most people drill into the thin casting on the side, I thought it might be better to pull that ball out and tap there instead

    anyone have any suggestions on removing the worm gear assembly. following the video exactly, also using needle nose instead of spanner wrench, and i cannot budge this thing loose for the life of me. I'm talking completely seized in there??????

    • @hutchhiperf

      Usually it's because of leaks and needing readjustment.

    • @rogervee689
      @rogervee689 2 роки тому

      As I understand it, there’s only one adjustment, (at the top of nut and Allen wrench), iv tightened the Allen bolt as far as it goes and still have some play in the steering, I’m I missing an adjustment

    Great videos ! My box is leaking from the front aluminum cover seal. Can I remove the cover and replace the seal still mounted in the car? Can I purchase just the seal? Thanks

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  10 років тому

      If you're talking about the Housing End Plug (that big "cup" at the end of the unit facing toward front of car), then yes. I'm not sure if you can buy only that o-ring, but you should be able to.

    good video but you might want to put more light (a lot) on the subject, focus the camera and try to set the camera up so that your hands aren't in the way.
    but your subject matter is great and you explain things pretty well. good job

    I'm trying to follow your video. My gearbox looks like yours but it from a 98 GMC K1500, How do you figure out what model gear box you have? I have the box apart but notice some differences. Thanks for sharing the video

  • @LynxStarAuto

    Absolutely excellent video. I haven't tinkered with one of these since I was a kid in the 90's helping my dad at the shop. Now I got one to repair on an old C10 pick up. Your video put me up to speed in no time thanks! 👌🏽👍🏽
    Quick question though, will a rebuild kit correct excessive rotational play at the input shaft? I can turn the shaft 1/4" or so both ways before any movement is detected at the pitman arm.

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  9 років тому

      +Lynx Star Automotive (Gabe V) If it's not physical wear on the parts I would think the adjustments at the end when it's done should take care of that.

    Did you notice that the old sector shaft roller bearing has a lip or ridge on the outside of it and the new bearing doesnt? Not sure if it matters

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  9 років тому

      +GhostWS.6 I will say it did make me pay attention to how deep I installed the bearing. Other than that, I don't think it was an issue for me.

    What kit do you recommend using?

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  8 років тому

      +Brett Lewis Honestly, I think the kit (or kits) are made by only a few mfg. They just get boxed and sold by different companies. The one I used was "made" by Duralast. I thought it was a well put together kit.

    i know the nut with the ellen key i know what he doing!

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  10 років тому

      Are you talking about the Pitman Shaft "Over Center" Sector Adjustment?? It increases or decreases the mesh between the Pitman Shaft and Rack Piston teeth. This tightens or loosens the feel at "over center" or when just starting to come off of pointing straight. I think that's what you're asking. Let me know.

    • @raziko111
      @raziko111 10 років тому

      no. i am talking on the scheibe with two holes!
      lets say that i am open the hood in my gmc safari and i am looking from above and i see the input shaft that comes from the dashboard/firewall he entering into the gear steering when he get in there is an a big adjust nut with two holes!
      what is that adjust???
      thanks...

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  10 років тому

      Raz Alkabets AHH, sorry. That is the lock nut on the adjuster plug. It holds the adjuster plug in place after setting the Thrust Bearing Preload. Check out the "Part 1" video. I go through the adjustments in that vid. It leaked out a couple of seals afterwards, so I rebuilt the whole thing,

      i want to tell you somthing!.after i bought my safar then i doing a oils changing,then the all sysytems collapse,a/c.a/t,ST,just the engine.water cooling and the back axe staying alive,i do a rebuild to all ST,pump,hydrobooster,gear ST,and all boll joints,plus greasing them,when my mechanic replace the gear ST,the ST was no like i except,before i replace the gear ST,it was so soft that turn the vehicle with my little finger of my hand,and after the repair it was like honda civic,daihatsu charade no like GMC SAFARI,i do a adjust by sector shaft,(loosen the nut with ellen key,adjust,and locking the nut),it will do a little play left and right and little soft but never like the first gear ST(i plaing with the sector shaft a lot but nothing)
      can i do a adjust by the two holes left and right scheibe???
      or there is an other solution???
      thank you very much...

      i dont know if i renew to you but i find out what was making my steering so soft and easy to use!
      the previous car owner was a disabled person and it was renovated steering gear box
      someone took out the pinion from inside the box sanded it somewhere in place who deal with it and replace it back in the box where it is should be!
      that what i dont know from the begining!
      how i found it!? i asked car builders for disabled persons

      Great news! I'm glad it helped. I like the color of the installed box in the pick. So many times you see them painted black. I like it when the mechanicals stand out instead of just blending into the background.

    • @hutchhiperf
      @hutchhiperf  10 років тому

      Sorry. I understand (I think) what you're saying. It's a different PS Gear Box all together from the original that was there. Don't know what to tell you there. Maybe take it back and explain your problem. You start playing with it too much and mess something up, they may not warranty it.
      It may be the wrong geared box for your application, or a constant effort vs a variable effort box, or your first was just really loose compared to this one. Too much to guess in a post.

      and if i can it is risky?
      what kind of steering gear i have?
      saginaw 800??
      where can i find the number/model/or type
      of my steering box?
      please help me with that and i will help you with many things that you will need to
      by the way after all giant invest on all components of my steering i do a flush with special oil "BG 100% synthetic power steering fluid" after the flush the fluid was looks shining green,a lot of crap goes out!
      and after 7,100 kilometers the fluid transformed to red like the first fluid when i bought my safari,and now i do it again!!!
      thats all :)
      thanks again!

      Raz Alkabets I see your post on AstroSafari.com. The pick shows the end cap. That is usually where that info is. The new one probably doesn't have that. I would go back to the forum and discuss the matter further with a group that knows your vehicle better. Good luck.
