Christopher Kerr , MD, PhD, is chief medical officer and CEO of Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo. In addition to direct patient care, Dr. Kerr focuses on the areas of leadership and patient advocacy. He oversaw the integration and expansion of palliative care in hospitals and developed an extensive home-based program for adults and children. He has published articles on innovative program models designed to better align patient and family services with the complexity of needs inherent in advanced illness.
Dr. Kerr's research journey has evolved from bench science to the human experience of illness as observed at the bedside, particularly the dreams and visions of patients at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near-universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning, as well as insight into the life led and anticipated death. To date, the Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo research team has published numerous studies on this topic and documented more than 1,500 end-of-life events, many of which have been filmed.
Dr. Kerr's work was published in a recent book entitled Death Is but a Dream: Finding Hope and Meaning at Life's End.
Christopher Kerr is a doctor in a palliative care center. All his patients die. Yet he has treated thousands of patients who, in the face of death, speak of love and grace. Beyond the physical realities of death, there are invisible processes that are remarkably life-giving. These include dreams that are unlike any ordinary dream. Described as “more real than reality,” these end-of-life experiences resurrect past relationships, significant events, and themes of love and forgiveness; they restore meaning to life and mark the transition from distress to comfort and acceptance.
Drawing on interviews with more than 1,400 patients and more than a decade of quantified data, Dr. Kerr reveals that pre-death dreams and visions are extraordinary events that humanize the dying process. He explains how his patients' stories show that death is not only the end of life, but also the final chapter of humanity's transcendence. Kerr's audiobook also highlights the benefits of these phenomena for the bereaved, who find comfort in seeing their loved ones pass away with a sense of calm closure.
Beautifully written, with astonishingly real characters and stories, this audiobook is at its heart a celebration of the power we have to reclaim the process of dying and give it deeper meaning. pour ma part mon arrière grand mère m'avait dit quequand son mari (mon arrière grand père était mort il avait tiré ses draps sur sa tete avant pendant et que c'etait un signe d'agonie elle etait de 1800 , on disait donc que les mourrantsremontent leurs draps surleurtete et elle disait aussi qu'il avait vu les gens décédés de sa famille venir le chercher, elle l'a dit ! j'etais tres petite j'avais 3 ans et la famille ne voulait pas que j'aille le voir mort dans sa chambre,mais j'y suis allée et j'ai pris sa main "pépé " il etait glacé et raide !!j'ai compris ! !!!ou!j'rai compris
