This momma will stop crying now that one of her young 'uns has left home. Jessie puts his heart and soul into everything he does....whether it was sports, or the easiest of machining parts to the most difficult...he just gives it his all. Congratulations, son...make Texas proud!

    Hats off to you machinists in the cnc shops. You are all very talented. But lets give a shout out to all the machinists working in the 1-of shops and repair shops. Keeping steel mills, oil patches, constuction equipment and on & on going. Often we work on older, clapped out lathes and mills sometimes without dro's and hold .0005 to .001" tolerances for bearings or bushings. We help keep the economy going to and there will always be a need for repair shops.
    We're all in this together. Cheers and stay safe.

    I wish I could've worked with you guys! I used to have good intuition for this cnc-type problem solving at the school and at my first job. I thought this is the proffesion for me. (It's a good feeling when you're young and you realise you can do something well, without much effort, and that this is what you'll be a pro in, this is what's for you) Went to UK in 2008 and found no job in CNC, so ended up working in a Hotel for 7 years...
    Now I'm back at the job and place that I was looking for in the UK. It's four minutes drive from where I live, but I'm surrounded by 23 year old cocky tossers, who either just like showing off instead of explaining, developing, or are just unable to teach, and can only answer questions really. I also haven't received the actual training with these MORI machines, that they all had. And I'm strugling man... really struggling. Can't make it work. What I do is shit, and I can't be relied upon to set up a machine by myself still! After 2 years! If I was just out of school it would be the clearest thing to me that this isn't for me at all! I used to like problem solving, now if there's any problem, I'm just mad. I used to laugh at people who get mad when the machine doesn't do what he wants. Now I'm one of those idiots. (though I'm not mad at the machine :)
    Never struggled anywhere I went, anything I've done in my life. I always just did tings at a speed and precision that felt right and I've stood out quickly as a highly useful member of whatever team. How did I end up struggling and not being able to improve and do my job properly in the one thing I thought will be the thing for me?
    Anyway watching you guys made me remember what I used to like about machining. I forgot it completely... It must be so cool to have the know how and have all those toys to play with and to make cool parts.
    You guys have a really good thing going on over there! I hope it will last long!

    • @randomidiot8142
      @randomidiot8142 2 роки тому +1

      I used to think machining was what I wanted to do too. Then I realized most of the places that paid well were in 💩hole places and the places I wanted to live were hours away. Learned I hated commuting every day and wasting so much time with that, and dealing with people. Forgot just about everything I learned in school so simple Cad work to make 3d prints is a stressful nightmare.
      Now I drive a truck. As long as I'm running hard I'm happy. When I have home time I do my little machining projects that make me happy (and sometimes money) while I save up for bigger machines.
      The problem with working your dream job is when it takes over your life. Too much passion that consumes you to the point you're blinded to the world, and eventually you burn out. Then what? You're burned out on a passion. I'm kind of glad my dream didn't become my job when I was younger. I would be in a much different place than where I am now, and I think I'm happy with where I'm at. Everything happens for a reason.

    I am by no means an expert in my field, and have next to no experience with 4-axis machining, let alone more axis than that - but in the small shop where I work (10 people in total) I'm one of the two that often get the more organic/intricate shaped parts, because I can figure out weird designs for fixturing that let me do my job quicker in the long run.
    But even though I'm still fairly new (4 years in the field) and like to better myself (both in fixturing, designs, programming etc.) the most important aspect of my workday is the stability of my mental health - and in that regard, a good work environment is key IMO; and these two really show how that's meant to be. A little back and forth, with a touch of respect and playfullness.
    As one of my friends said:
    "You might complain about having a shitty day at work, but at no point have you ever said you hated your job or didn't want to go to work tomorrow."

    • @Jessie_Smith
      @Jessie_Smith 2 роки тому

      That’s what it’s about man, just because you only have 4 years experience doesn’t mean you can’t accomplish great things. A lot of people in this field love to throw out how many years experience they have but at the end of the day if you can’t learn to think outside the box then number of years doesn’t matter. Keep that fire lit man and never let the thought enter your mind that you have learned it all. Once you do that then you stop growing and pretty soon your methods will be old school.

Not that I get bored of the lathe but I believe if a person stops learning he’s dead. And it’s always been my goal to learn the mill.

    Well I use to be just like you-all. Been a while since I've been in a shop. A lot has changed and a lot is the same.

      Same as you, retired and rusting away like an old forgotten combination sqaure left out in the rain. It's a fact that you will never be as good as you think in this challenging industry. Engineers will continue to challenge your abilities with complex or poorly thought out designs. Thankfully, many will not experience the problems and pain of tooling up and machining those accursed castings that were used for decades in the aerospace industry. 👴🏽😉

    Never used a 5 axis.... but I had to turn 4-40 threads on a 1/8" copper rod before.... that was a bitch. Also had parts that would go out for plating and then after they came back had to turn an angle on the back of the I.D..... had to turn a matching fixture for it and then indicate it in for every piece because it had to be concentric, nowhere near this level though.

      @@barrysetzer Exactly. I remember when I first started on machines, I was so stressed out at the end of the day. I was so nervous about making scrap parts it was hurting me mentally. When I told my department lead about what I was going through he pulled me aside. He showed me this huge rack of material and said " See all of that? We have plenty of material to make parts" He then explained that he assigned me to the machine he did specifically because it was the first operation of the part. He told me that scrap it is part of the trade and it's important that you know how/why you made a scrap part. Everyone scraps parts at some point. If you are interested in the trade just do it. It can be overwhelming at first, but it's also incredibly satisfying. The early days in the trade are the best. Learning new things and techniques on a daily basis makes for fun days at work. No matter who you are or how long you've been in the trade there is always more to learn and ways to grow.

      Like Barry said. There will always be a part out there that will make everyone feel that way. I have felt that way a million times, but you are never defeated until you give up. Everything is a learning experience and in this field you will only be as good as you want to be.

      @@supernova5419 There are all kinds of sources on line that you can learn basics from. Check you area for trade schools or the local community colleges are also a good place to start. Getting into a program shows potential employers that you are serious about the trade. If there is nothing that you can into locally then just start knocking on doors at shops. Have a positive attitude and be willing to learn, you'll have a job in no time. In my time in the the trade I've seen that the best employers tend to hire for attitude train for aptitude.
