  • We've got a lot of new things happening! While this is our second year here, this is the first full year we've really been able to dedicate time and energy to garden space. And this year, we're expanding!

I think that idea of planting 3 yrs worth is genius.

Oh Amy! I love this idea and have been doing something like it for a while. I guess I just didn’t know it was a thing. 😊 It works great for me. My children have grown and gone now. My labor force has moved on, so I don’t have the help I used to. I don’t have to put up as much as I used to when they were home either, so I have downsized a bit.
It works well for me to grow a ton o’ beans one year. Then I can put that extra space to peppers the next or tomatoes the next. I’ll admit, by the time I get done processing all the green beans I don’t care if I don’t see another green bean for a couple more years. But I’m not doing a huge amount of other things at the same time. It seems to balance out.
That’s said, there is a risk that the year you plan to grow and put up three years of beans, you could have it all wiped out with a pest or disease. So you need to be comfortable with taking that risk.
The years I plant a big tomato crop, I still plant peppers and beans and peas, but the pressure is off for putting up these other things. It has been a huge blessing for us as we get older and our needs change.
Best of luck to you. God bless you and your garden this summer. May God supply all your needs according to his riches in glory.

YES!! this really works, I have done it for a long time, we re in the north (zone 4) and it is actually a "no frost free area" meaning I can get a killing frost in any month of the summer, and I have had it wipe out whole crops. So when it comes to the basics; beans, tomatoes, potatoes and greens, I do focus each year on one and it hasn't failed me yet!

Thanks for this 3yr plan. I was complaining about the cow peas that has been growing so much and taking up freezer space. Now i will think of canning them.

Woven weave ground cover is fantastic. Hands full of weeds per garden Not wheelbarrows. Keeps the soil moisture, lower ground temperature for the plants in the heat of the summer by up to 10 degrees. Can’t do without it after 4 years.

We used Woven Ground Cover as we built our 350 ft driveway to prevent the “precious “ pit run gravel from sinking into our Deep MUD… so far so good 🤞🏼

What happens if you are doing 3 year gardening, and something wipes them out and your entire harvest is a bust? 😬

How do you get the greenhouse fabric to stay put? I have some that I wanted to try this year because the weeding gets out of hand.

Planting multiple year's worth makes sense. But harvesting and preserving that much would be a challenge for me. Green beans, for example, are very time consuming.

I agree with this. Last year I put up a ton of pickles and green beans. This year I only planted fresh eating cucumbers. Its a bit of a relief knowing I don’t need to can pickles this season.Three years is a stretch for us right now but 2 feels doable and working up towards 3.
