Are the RBP Power Steps Better than Amp Research Power Steps

- What’s up everybody? Today’s video is a quick 10 month review on my RBP Stealth Power Running Boards (3” extended version). I purchased them from Custom Offsets Website and installed them back in January 2020. If you happen to purchase anything from them, please let them know at check out that I sent you.
I chose the RBP Power Steps over the Amp Power Steps for 5 main reasons.
1. RBP had the extended drop version (at the time)
2. RBP does not plug into the OBD2 port
3. RBP were cheaper
4. RBP comes with 2 motors per step
5. RBP has similar specs and warranty

I'm on my second truck with Amp Research power steps. They've been great. 4 years on my RAM and over 2 years on my GMC with no problems. I didn't pay $1500-$1600 for mine. It was more like $1200-$1300 but I didn't get the Extreme. I would think they're more. I don't lift my trucks either. Winters can be tough here in New England sometimes with slush, ice and salt. I had a problem with ice once but that's the only problem I've had. I installed these steps on both my trucks and it wasn't very difficult. My son put Amps on his Chevy truck and he hasn't had any problems either. I can't figure why others have had problems. I never heard of Amps having bad motors either.

Glad I saw your video! I just replaced electric step hinges that were on a dodge power wagon. It took over two months to get the hinges. Nearly $400!!! I have a single cab ram 3500 dually not 4wd but sits pretty high. I’m going to be looking for some steps for it soon! Thanks again I am going to check out your installation of these type steps.
Glad I watched your video. I'm also not too keen to have it plugged into my obd port so this is a perfect workaround to it.

This is a great video! Thank you! I have had my 21 F150 for a couple months now and I think I've settled on a 6 inch lift. I was thinking of going with the extended drop steps also because I'm short haha.. I'm going to check out your install video too

Thanks to this video I just ordered the RBP extended drop steps from summit racing for my 2012 Ram with 8" lift and 37s. Summit racing site says a expected ship date of June 25th for them. So hopefully they will ship out late june or early mid july🙏🏻.

@@DieselLegiance Yup will do, I will have a few videos of my 2012 Ram truck on my channel later this summer as well. First i have to get fender flares painted and installed and a few other minor things. Love your truck and color of the truck as well. I wanted a megacab in the granite crystal with a lift and 37s but couldn't find anything for under 53k😔. Prices have gone crazy. So i settled for a black 2012 with 8" lift 37s with 89,000 original miles instead.

Good overview. My one complaint about Mopar power steps is the 1 inch gap when they're tucked up. Wish mine were more streamlined like yours. Mine also don't have lights which blows given what they charge for em.

2 motors could be 2x the chance of failure?? cheap is not always better with a design flaw, had my AMP steps for 3 years....flawless.
Had my RBP steps for that longs with no issues…Flawless as well. But now the RBP Extended steps cost the same as Amp Extreme steps and $2k is crazy 😜

great, but what about someone in a big medium duty or heavy duty truck. I blew out my knee but still want to drive my truck. It's 2 ft to the running board or if I removed the running board it's a 3 ft climb into my cab. I can't do it any longer because of my knee. So I'm out of work until . . .
The extended steps are about 3” lower than standard power steps so they do make a difference.
The obd port connection is optional on amps
Great video very detailed I enjoyed. 2020 ram cummins in my driveway I made mistake of buying carbon steel side steps well in north east rust is already showing on the steps need to get something else
Cool! very slick and stealthier than AMP. Do both side steps retract when opening only 1 door? Does it have a manual on/off switch in case you dug into the sand, mud or snow? Thanks!

I agree with this video 100%. My problem with these is they are out of stock everywhere, online, amazon and RBP. I contacted RBP a few weeks ago through email, telephone etc. and I have still to hear back from them. Then I hear through different chat rooms that they may be calling it quits! (which again is why i tried reaching out to them to confirm). So, if I'm getting No customer service Pre sale, Im worried what its going to be like post sale.
I thought I read something somewhere that AMP was trying to sue RBP as their step design was too close to Amp’s so maybe that’s why there is an inventory pause with RBP?
@@DieselLegiance I guess we can take it for what it's worth, but just off the phone with RBP. They're saying the steps are on backorder and no plans of closing. The guy I spoke with says the steps are made overseas (not sure where) and was saying the manufacturer was hit hard - also again guessing because of Covid and the plant is still shut down. He thinks production will resume soon and told me to add my email to the "notify me" list and they will let me know once the steps are available again.
Ok that’s good. I hoped they would stick around as the steps are amazing in my opinion.

I have the amp for 5yrs now I have to spray the mechanical parts but they been solid but I wish urs were available when I got them
I just went to offsets page and seem to be no longer available, instead they now offer the AMP brand (for my ford)
I freakin' love the mods you did to your truck. You probably don't tow much, but if I did a similar suspension lift and tires, would it really hurt me towing light to moderate trailers or campers?
You can definitely tow (I can) if you stabilize the truck like I did and use a drop hitch. Maybe add air bags to the back to minimize towing squat.

I think Amp has a sensor to keep from accidentally closing ..for those guys that say their unit is freaking out.. I think maybe a call to Amp asking how to clean that sensor would be in order. Just saying

I came here in search for power steps for my 2003 RAM 2500. AMP have a version called Extreme, that have dual motor, but the price is linked to the name...
I liked this one, as you said, I don't want more stuff plugged into my OBD plug.
Does anyone here had experience with this side steps in the winter? How do they do in frozen weather?
I live in Pennsylvania so I deal with frozen winters and never had an issue with the RBP steps.

I was looking at the amps because they make a kit so you can buy whatever year and the kit will make it fit an 98-02, there definitely nice but idk about 1500 bucks for some steps lol
Clean steps and truck. Can you please attach the link to your install video of these steps. I own a 16' Ram Laramie Dually and am looking for steps like this that will hide. Plus my wife is only 4'9" so its difficult for her to get in the truck as well.

Amp would be better for this truck. They sit a little lower. My AMP open as soon as I hit the door handle basically. These are much slower. Amp has a smoother extraction too. There’s a little click on the platform at the end of the extraction point with these. They’re just running boards after all and your truck is 🔥 🔥 🔥 either way!!
So, unless they have grease fittings on the joint points, they will fail. All of these boards use a bushing on the pivot points that is a steel shell with a thin plastic bearing surface. The road crud gets in and then you get the dreaded board hangup. Good informed! Especially about the use/non-use of the vehicles OBD port.
My biggest concern with either power steps is the durability. If I buy a truck part I want it to last, especially if I am paying 3-7 times as much as a stationary step. I wish there was more information in the reviews that have had failures. From what I have gathered the motors don't fall often, but the wiring on amp steps do. Also amp steps only have two body mounts, making the body more likely to develop rust.
I like the RBP. They have dual motors per side. They have a 5 year warranty. Each step holds like 600lbs. And wiring was easy and protected. If your truck is not lifted you may not need them though.

Been rocking AMP steps for three years now. Never had a problem...120 degrees to -6 degrees. Been there every year for three years. But hey, to each his own.

I have power steps because I have an 11” lift on 40” tires so the steps help getting in and out of my truck easier. I don’t rock climb so never been a poser.

Yeah, I see that. I think since Covid happened, limited material availability and shipping delays, everything has gone up. Me personally, I still like RBP as I don’t want anything else plugging into my OBD2 port.

What's the purpose of the 4 second delay? You're either in or out of the truck and you can't use them to access the bed unless the door is open. . . so the delay is lost on me. Doesn't seem like a real selling point.
It’s more for if you are shutting the front door to go open the back door without the motors running all the time up and down wearing them out faster. It’s actually helpful.

Yep, I have had zero issues and still love mine today 10/24/22.
So bought the RBP extended. The question I have is, if there is a way I can hook up without using the magnets?
The magnets are used to activate the steps up and down when you open the door. You can always use the manual switch too.
@@DieselLegiance I just bought a RBP for my RAM 1500, I got the lower steps through your recommendation. There was a post that I saw that someone hooked it up to their dome light. Just wondering if anyone else have done that.
Just wanted to let you know that Amp Research offers the "Amp Research PowerStep XTREME" which has two motors per side as well as the standard ones with only one motor per side.
Yes. I did see that. Keep in mind though, the Amp extremes are almost double the cost of the RBP.

Mine are not AMP they are RBP extended stealth running boards. I got mine from Custom Offsets.

Like the video.. Great review and a good discussion Amp vs RBP. I believe that Amp have dual motors on each side now and also have an extended version for lifted trucks as well as an Extreme version for those who take their vehicles off roading a bit more.

Hey Matt, so again today I wrote to RBP letting them know of my frustrations with regards to the Power steps being out of stock since 2020. I've been trying to get a set of the XL's since April 2020 with no luck. Last time I wrote RBP, they were blaming Covid for no stock. IMHO, that reason is no longer valid and unacceptable. That being said, are you concerned about getting replacement parts if yours have issues? I mean - what good is a 5 year warranty on a product that RBP can't even get themselves? I can't even get an ETA of when the RBP XL's will be available again.
Not sure why the RBP extended steps are hard to find. I heard it may be AMP trying to stop them from selling them because they are similar steps at a lower price but I don’t have this confirmed?
Not to argue....but covid is still an excuse for many suppliers. Lead times on equipment and parts in manufacturing has doubled on som cases. Things that take typically 6 are taking 3 months. These suppliers wouldn't want to lie, they don't get paid until 30 days AFTER delivery.
As much as our media likes to say we are in a down turn economy because they love drama, demand for everything is still very high. If it wasn't, inflation wouldn't be rampant on everything.
To your point, is covid to blame directly? No. Indirectly yes. Labor shortages caused by people not wanting to work, the lasting effects of supply chain ripple from the disruption of covid, material shortages like rubber (un-covid-related) coupled with a slow supply chain.
Welcome to the 2000s where you ordered things and had no idea when it would show up.

I went through two winters and mine are still in great shape. My truck parks outside too.

I really loved the style and look vs the amp. I orders a set in June of 2020 and have not received them yet. The company I ordered through says they are having issues with Amp complaining about RBP similar design and are not making them right now. So frustrated! I wanted these cause they look so much sturdier than the Amp.
Ask for a refund, then go check out Custom Offsets as that is where I got mine. If you do buy anything there, let them know at check out that @Diesel_Harm sent you.

Really? I never head of any issues with RBP power steps. Now I will say, Covid has been an issue with shipping everywhere.

I know Amp finally came out with an extreme step but it’s almost $1800 for basically what RBP sells for $1400

RBP doesn't make a set for any GMC/Chevy 2013 or older... that's lame. I sent a message to them about it, maybe they are designing some.
Well they replied back quickly and said they are designing steps for many models but for my specific model it would be a long long time... haha
Rbp steps are 2 grand now. Absolutely unreal, guess I'll just keep my original ones

Bro! awesome video. I went with the AMP and I totally regret it. So I installed them on my 2019 Jeep 4 door Rubicon and look great but have been a HUGE pain. Now I don't think AMP is the issue but after I removed and reinstalled the door on the Jeep the steps go up and down when the doors are completely closed. It is SUUUUUUUUUUPER annoying especially when you are driving and hear that constant up and down of the steps. Sometimes it even goes down after parking for a few minutes like if a ghost opened the door. I think the issue is that these steps feed from door wires by the footwell on the passenger side and JL's have a retarded problem. The Jeep electrical plugs have these super weak pins that bend easily. So when you reinstall the Jeep doors and re-plug everything even carefully those pins tend to bend. So I was hoping AMPs have the magnet option RBPs do but I haven't found any information. Looks like I will man up, take the loss and buy RBP steps. I whish I would have known this before spending those 1500-1600 bucks.
Bad install obviously should have had installed by a pro.... Not seeing other with this issue.
Do these have adequate strength to act like rock sliders? Chows truck need protection. Me not think they do. $1500 stairs. Gay. Maybe Chow put these on and get barb wire tattoo on arm and some hoop earrings too.

Try reaching out to them directly from their website or Instagram. I just checked my old messages with RBP and they said they were relocating their business during Covid and that slowed everything down.
