  • In April of 2004, teenager Hayley Williams, along with her friends and family were visiting Oakwood Theme Park in Pembrokeshire when disaster struck. When riding the start attraction known as Hydro, Hayley was thrown from the top of the ride and plummeted into the waters below. After the incident, an investigation found significant systematic failures in training and supervision of staff that could have prevented Hayley’s tragic demise. This is the Infamous story of the Hydro Disaster.

When I think of the phrase “life isn’t fair” I usually think of things like not getting a job I really wanted, getting sick at a bad time, etc. But cases like this remind me that life truly isn’t fair in the worst possible way. A talented and beloved girl lost her life way too soon in a place that’s supposed to be fun. I feel terrible for her and her family.

I was a “roller coaster tester” at universal studios Hollywood. Basically when adjustments to the rides were made, they had to test it with trained employees before the public. On the Jurassic Park boat ride there was a large drop that creates a big splash at the bottom. They adjusted the drop in the winter to slow down before the bottom, so the splash was smaller and riders would get less drenched in the cold winter weather. The 2nd test ride, the boat was stopped too quickly, and flipped over forward. Luckily we knew how to unbuckle and get out, so it was just scary for anyone watching, not us on the ride. Did end up in waist deep water tho.

I almost fell off that ride!! Me and my little sister (who’s an AMAZON and bigger than me) were riding and seated with a random man. He was very large, and the lap bar didn’t come down very far on my sister, and it basically did nothing for me. I’d been on the ride before so I knew the drop was coming and I was afraid I’d fall out, so I sunk down under the bar and wrapped both my arms around it to try to stay secure(and warned my sister of course). I still felt myself slip up during the drop and you could see legitimate terror in my face in the pictures afterwards XD a fun story afterwards but I really was scared I’d fall out and I thought it was strange they didn’t see the much smaller girl next to the VERY large man and thing maybe it’d be a tad uneven…

It not only is nice in the it feels like you're giving as complete of an overview as possible in the time span, but you also put the victim first. On the way up I suddenly got this overwhelming urge to jam my feet under this bar on the floor of the car. My feet with sneakers on were shoved down far in it felt like I might get stuck but everything in me told me to keep pushing them until they wouldn’t go any further. The. The ride plummeted! The safety bar flung up and my whole 75 pound body lurched straight up out of the seat and I was hanging like a kite by just my shoes jammed under that bar. The tops of my feet were bruised. My father grabbed the bar and pulled it down and he held on to me with one arm while having the time of his life like nothing wrong was going on, smiled and yowled from the thrill like any normal roller coaster ride. After it was over I was crying. He told me he didn’t see anything happen and that I was fine and that our brains play tricks on us. He was a psychopath who gaslit me at every chance! Hayley and her family deserved more justice...that is clearly gross negligence...I worked at a theme park, even though I did not do rides, I was friends with many ride operators...they had all day training and had to have supervised training as well...only one time did I question something (someone put an 11 month old baby on a ride) and let the ride go through, even though I tried to get the attendants attention...some people just do not care and that guy who failed to study Hayley's lap bar will have to live for the rest of his life knowing that his negligence caused the death of a young girl that many people loved...prayers to the Williams family and Hayley's friends who were there

This is the very definition of gross negligence. The engineer testified that he was dissatisfied with the general safety of the ride. A young teen with 20 minutes!? of training took over the responsibility of ensuring passenger's safety and lives. Would you feel comfortable if a pilot, or a train conductor had 20 minutes of training? Probably, not. This is not withstanding by his own admission the teen glossed over the safety manual and his supervisor overlooked it. Look, this is not flipping a burger at McDonald's here. If you screw up or are careless, people are going to get injured or much worse. These rides should not have sole operator's. And definitely not just a teen.. Adult supervision should always be present.

Thank God I'm a very cautious person and kept my eyes on my kids at all times. Being a Firefighter/EMT I've seen alot of tragedy. Because other wise I wouldn't have seen him and he would have fallen out if the ride. Afterwards We looked at the picture taken by the ride that are for sale. Im wearing a tank top and you can see every muscle in my upper body flexed as I was pushing him back into his seat next to me. He was full of smiles because fortunately he had no idea what was happening. Don't rely on the park staff to make sure your children are safe. Do it yourself. If it looks like your child could come out of their seat STOP the ride from leaving. Scream if you have to. That's your child's life after all.

The local park to me here in California had an identical ride. I wanted to go on it with my friends when I was a young teen (roughly 2005/6) & they had a test seat at the beginning of the line. They had an attendant checking to make sure people fit in the seats, but I wasn’t allowed to ride it because my shoulders were too narrow and could fit between the top of the bars. I remember hearing about this and it makes sense that that was why. But I’ve noticed since then they no longer have the test seat nor attendant. I’ve still never ridden it.
There’s a ride across from it that is like a bar with seats and it spins and holds people upside down. I can slip through the bars on that too, but I found out by riding it. Thankfully I was able to stay in my seat by crossing my legs under the seat and holding on for dear life but it was NOT fun. Definitely needs to be more precautions taken to prevent things like what happened to Hayley.

Why did she fall out and nobody else? She doesn’t appear to have abnormal physical dimensions or anything. And it has 2 restraints.
