Slow curation really is the name of the wardrobe game. It's not an overnight process, it's focusing on quality pieces you love over time!

I have a fairly large wardrobe but I have mostly second hand really nice pieces. Linen, cotton, silk and everything fits. I have made sure everything I love. ❤️❤️❤️

That matters more to me than have a minimalist capsule. I like being maxamalist and I like that much of my things are second hand and worn all of the time because I love them. And why not

That's also good. The key is to wear your stuff, not have stuff that sits there for years & years not being used/worn occupying unnecessary space. Also love my linen silk cotton & viscose.

I made a big downsizing today of my cosmetic and hygienic stuff - so great! It will make a big change to my morning routine, knowing exactly where is which product and not losing time searching for it (every single morning!). Having less products on the shelves actually makes me want to use them more 👍🏻 I wanted to share this, as we often keep focus on our clothes only, but there might be other areas more easy to start with or making a bigger difference to our every day life ❤️

I started minimizing in 2017. I have downsized to 40 clothing pieces (not including underwear, shoes & coats) for a 4 season climate. I have maintained that since fall of 2018.
From there I moved through the rest of the house!

"We need to say 'No thanks' to all of the excess in life." - How true. It is imperative that we always remember that there is NO END to things we could acquire and learn and practice the art of being very selective and to say no to most options available out there. Buy only what truly makes you happy and enhances your life for years to come not just once or twice.

    Hi, Signe!
As a materials engineer (okay, this apparently has nothing to do with 'the fashion world', lifestyle, etc...), I just want to tell you that I identify immensely with your point of view on consumerism vs. minimalism (even with all the stereotypes that this term carries in itself) and, more specifically, with your perspective on the impact that all this has caused on the world.
"Use less", to me, sounds like much more than a concept, a way of living or even a choice, but more than that, a necessity nowadays.
I'm glad I found your channel! So I congratulate you on the initiative to produce such a truly content relevant.
Thank you for making a difference. ❤️

Thank you Signe. You've inspired me to stand up and declutter. I have a bunch of items I'm not wearing (couldn't part with) and it's time to let things go. Less burden, more overview, more freedom. Take care!

I just finished "The Joy of Less", "The life-changing magic of tidying up" I read two weeks ago, and I'm halfway through "Goodbye, things".
Oh, and of course I've followed you for more than a year! In the course of this time, I've downsized my clothes by 60% and am currently still getting rid of things. Turned all my hangers the other way yesterday to see what I actually wear. 🤣
Now everything fits into a 1m wardrobe, which is soooooo awesome! The space is amazing.
I really love your style and philosophy in general, you are an inspiration.
Also: holy shit, that mirror at 7:35 was incredible! What a gorgeous piece.

Over the past two years, I’ve been building a capsule wardrobe and now have only items that I love and wear in rotation for all seasons. I’ve organized my closet into fall/winter and spring/summer sections. I have never enjoyed shopping, so now having a complete wardrobe that will be with me for a long while feels liberating. It’s such a relief to feel confident with the content of my closet needing nothing more. I can do so much more with my time than shop and stress over clothing.

Hi Cheryl! I know this comment is 2 years old but it caught my attention! Do you have any advise on how to build your closet in such a way? I find myself keeping clothes for the convenience but not necessarily because I LOVE the items. I'm a college student so I love some of my dress up pieces but I don't get the chance to wear them :/ I usually only have time to just grab whatever that's easiest and comfortable but my closet is an absolute mess of clutter. I have so many t-shirts mixed with nice tops I love but don't get around to wearing. I think when we have abundance of clothes, it actually makes you feel like you have nothing to wear because it's so overwhelming. Sorry for the long comment!!! Looking forward to your advise! ☺️

I’m flattered that you reached out. I’m older than you and in a different stage of life, but I feel that the fundamentals still apply, so I’ll tell you my system and hopefully you can use gain something useful. My system is to have a few tops that match all your bottoms in both warm and cold season styles. Separate seasons on different rails or put off season into storage until the current season changes. These pieces should be your favorites. Everything else goes into storage for 6 months. Shoes, coats, accessories, the same. Designate a small area for dressy/ occasion wear separate from daily items. All tops hang together, bottoms together, sweaters and foldables in one drawer or shelf. Wear items on the rotation, then place them back into your closet at the back of “ next up”. Remember, you love all your pieces and they all match (more or less). See if you can live with this situation for 6 months, then go back to your stored/discarded clothing and see if you still want them. When making new purchases ask yourself if you need the item to fill a gap or do you just want to shop. The items we choose make must suit our lifestyle an make us feel great each day, or it’s just a burden that brings stress. And, who needs any more stress in her life 😉. This is the start of a discriminating closet, and you will learn how to adapt it to your own style and life with time. You get to make all the choices, good and some not so good, but you will learn in the process. I hope this doesn’t sound bossy and you get something positive from it.

This video is inspiring. I want to embrace minimalism for my wardrobe. My concern is that I have recently lost 65 lbs and while I was losing, I picked up items that were fast fashion and not really me because I wasn’t sure where my size would settle and what my style truly was. Now, I have some pieces that fit the classic/edgy look I feel best in, but I need to invest in the basics for a functional wardrobe. Because of quarantine, I can’t thrift and my lifestyle has changed. Should I just do a purge and see what I can live without for the time being? It’s so hard.

  • @Carla-ou2yb

For me, minimalism has slowly developed overtime and now I am way less interested in buying and possesing things. It started with the simple rule of not buying new make up (unless I needed some new concealer or eyebrow pencil) for a few months and then I started implementing more of these "low buy" and "no buy" habits.
It has made me appreciate my possesions even more and now I love spending weeks on researching before I make a purchase.
I still enjoy "unnecessary" things like jewellry, home decor, clothing and all these little things but I own very little and chose timeless things that I love and cherish a lot.
I'd suggest starting slowly with the habits I mentioned, this way, the minimalist mindset comes very easy and gets a part of your identity instead of you forcing it and then not sticking it with it :)

I feel as if there's an element of frugality when it comes to the anti-newness perspective with clothes. It's always great to donate items you no longer love or wear, but if you're struggling to part with something because you want to use it up or until it becomes unwearable, I don't see any harm in that either- though, I don't always adapt to that mindset personally. Clothes are meant to be worn and used, and you don't have to spend huge amounts of money to find great quality, basic pieces. :)

I love a capsule wardrobe, I am very lucky to have a spare closet, so I store my off season clothes in there.I find the less clothes I own, the more I have to wear, everything mixes and matches, and my 33 piece seasonal wardrobe is all I need, I also am more aware when I need to replace an item, to buy better quality

Excellent video. While you yourself have many of the classic pieces that other UA-camrs/vloggers/bloggers recommend (black blazer, black moto jacket, white button down shirt etc), it is great that you allow people to find their own signature pieces instead of prescribing what people should own. Blazers don't necessarily suit everyone's lifestyle or personal style, for instance. Other people hate wearing jeans, as another example. You've emphasized the important principles rather than the specifics of which articles of clothing are necessary, which I really appreciate.

I love a simple white shirt and jeans, I could wear it my whole life but because repeating outfits isn’t normalized I buy multiple cheap items instead of one quality item. And I wear them once and go back to not having any clothes to wear because initially I didn’t even want them... this year I’ve been really trying to stick to my own taste, irregardless of people’s opinions (my mom and sister constantly comment that my style is boring)... some days it’s harder to stay true to myself and I’m very happy you’re here to encourage me!

What i found helpful when my closet is full of clothes but i have nothing to wear is visualize what would i wear in an ideal situation. Like if i could snap my fingers and have those items magically appear what would they be? For example, if my friend says let's go out for a drink (not now obviously :)) but as an example) and i think i have nothing to wear, i imagine what my ideal outfit would look like and what's missing. From there i identify what i may need to get. Maybe i have something similar and don't need to buy anything, but for me the first thing is to have an idea if what i want, then i can go from there. For me I don't really have "going out" tops. I have a lot if office blouses, t shirts and sweaters but no "fancy" blouses and i imagine myself wearing a black or red v neck silky blouse with some lace maybe, dark jeans and mid heels. I'm missing the blouse so that goes on my wishlist. I don't go out a lot so 2 tops would be enough. From there i can search for it with purpose rather than just browsing a the whole webpage of a shop and finding things i like but don't need. I think it's very helpful to imagine what you would wear in an ideal world regardless of cost and go from there.

First of all, I want to thank you for all the great content you put out there, you are a great inspiration for me when it comes to valuing the things you surround yourself with. I have changed the way I shop, both when it comes to clothes and beauty, but also overall the mindset of shopping. I follow some other UA-camrs that also talk about minimalism and decluttering, and I have come to think about some things, especially regarding the situation we are in right now, with the virus and the lock down.My family and I live on a small farm, we have a kitchen garden where we grow vegetables, and we have fish from the sea and hunt deer in the forest. We try, as far as possible to use the resources that we have around us that are free to use. But when it comes to "stuff" and decluttering, I find that the minimalist approach is difficult. We have a lot of stuff, both in the house and in the barn, things that we may not use at the moment, but we may find use for it later. Maybe not even this year, but in a few years. This can be stuff we got for cheap, things we have picked up for free because someone tossed it away and so on and so forth. My point is, if you want to avoid shopping for new stuff and at the same time try to be as self-sufficient as possible, we can not "afford" to declutter things we do not use in the moment. Of course, this has a lot to do with the fact that we are both quite handy, we know how to repair things that have minor faults, but also the mindset that" this will come to use one day". For me , this is also a valuable mindset, something my parents tought me, but it also means that our house and barn contains a lot of "stuff", and here is the dilemma. The thought of decluttering because too much stuff messes up your mind versus keeping things that you may use in a few years. Of course this lifestyle is not compatible if you live in a small apartment in the town, but I think our kind of lifestyle also is minimalism, just without the thought of decluttering everything you do not use at the moment. And to be clear, I do not talk about hoarding stuff here!! :) Any thoughts?

I've always had autumn/winter clothes spring/summer that I move into storage in the loft when I don't need them (my mum did it so I learnt from her). I will admit I have too many clothes, more than I need... but 90% of what i own was bought at a charity shop/ebay/depop/Facebook selling group. I love a bargain!
I also love everything I have and find it hard to decide what to part with. I've started to store away things that I love or things that have sentimental significance to me but I no longer wear for my daughters. I think back to my mums wardrobe when I was a teenager (original 501's, Ray Ban wayfarers etc) She passed those things on but they'd be worth something now and I wish I had them!

As I have begun the journey to downsize, I seek problem areas, to identify my thought process and how my thinking needs to change in order to change my behavior (cognitive behavioral therapy from a QMHP!). I find one big challenge is to KNOW what you love! Sometimes you think you will love something and find that after a few wears not so much. I'm trying to do just that right now but the problem I have is that I don't really hate any of my clothes (but I don't love them either), so it's hard to justify replacing them. For some reason I find it really difficult to find pieces I truly love and I do have pretty good idea of my style, so I don't understand why it's so complicated. I feel like most people who go through this process realise one day that they just hate all of their clothes but sadly that's not my case haha. I know the basic declutter methods like get rid of things that don't fit you or that you don't wear etc but what about clothes that are still in perfect condition and that you can still see yourself wearing ? I can't keep everything because the goal is to own less clothes but I don't know how to choose what to keep or not

I'd start by picking out the things you absolutely love and wear frequently. Just put the rest into a box somewhere else and see whether you'll actually miss any of it. If yes: just go and get it. If you don't miss it: why keep it?

I can really related to what you are saying - I have the same problem. There are many clothes that I truly love in my wardrobe, but some of them are just... useful I guess, so its not like I truly love them but they work and I know its unlikely to find anybody whom they will fit as well as me and who would actually like those items. Also, in general, I am having a very hard time letting go of things. So here is what works best for me at the moment: Since November I completly stopped buying clothes and shoes and I will continue with this no buy until July. I regularly find pieces that I know I am certainly not going to wear in the future, so I can declutter those pieces and find better homes for them. And just by slowly getting rid of things and not adding anything I am downsizing my wardrobe (plus really doing my part for the environment in not using resources) :)

I'm curious if others might be wondering how to apply this if their jobs are very physical (like mine). I come into contact with metal every day and it causes holes and wear and tear much faster than if I were just working a desk job, or at least a job where I wasn't coming into contact with sharp edges all the time :')
I suppose an idea could be to break down my wardrobe into what I would wear strictly for work, and what I would wear strictly when not at work and downsize from there?

Wonderful and inspiring video! Thank you for great tips to downsize my wardrobe. I have a question though...should my clothes all " fit" into my closet? I seem to have clothes spilling into a small spare room. I feel guilty and have a tough time actually starting this process...thank you for your positive encouragement!

Sincere question- I’m confused how downsizing contributes to sustainable fashion? Sure, I have clothes that miss the mark for one reason or the other but I can make do until they wear out. My thinking, without “studying”, is that I simply won’t replace or would replace with what I actually want. 95% of what I own is from thrift stores anyhow. Might you be able to explain (or point me to a video that does) how downsizing clothes that suffice but aren’t 100% what one wants still contributes to sustainable fashion? Thank you!!

    • @UseLess_dk
      @UseLess_dk  4 роки тому

Downsizing is of course an act - something you can do here and now. But when you understand the true power and benefits of doing so, you've started practising being happy with what you have instead of constantly adding new items to your wardrobe. So downsizing your wardrobe can contribute to a lower amount of consumption, and that is one of the most important things when starting a sustainable fashion journey. :-) I hope that made things a little clearer! x

And if tomorrow we will not have the possibility to buy clothes? Will we not regret what we have decluttered? I hope i am negative and wrong... i jope minimalists are right and not having, in this particular moment, a not so wise behaviour!

Then we'll do it like our parents and grandparents did. My grandma added maybe two pieces to her wardrobe each year, and she was still happy and content.
Do you really think you'll run out of clothes?
Besides, if the world breaks down this much, I don't think that clothing will be our biggest problem.

I remember when i was a young girl... not having another pair of shoes and the trouble if they were wet... in general having so little clothes that very often i suffered the cold and things like that... i was not particularly poor... it was like that here in italy fifty years ago... i do not care so much about not being on fashion... i am now SO GRATEFUL about having what i need and feel so good having even some clothes just in case. I thought it was the past but now i understand that things can change and no always for the best...

    • @lelexoxo303

@@francescachecchin6191 Sure, things can change in the blink of an eye. My grandma loves her vegetable garden because she survived WWII and knew what it was like to go hungry.
But nowadays, so many people have excess, in all categories. I'm only speaking for myself of course, but I decluttered quite a bit and still have 15 pairs of shoes. I'm pretty sure most of us could wheather WWIII with just he clothes we own right now.

    • @angelas9721

I think its a very personal thing :) I really agree with you about having a second pair of shoes in case one is still wet from walking in the rain the night before. For me having a spare pair of shoes is definitely not too much but highly needed. Whereas other people would feel like its too much for them to own. Thats the thing about minimalism, as it was in the video, its a lifestyle (owning what you need and love and not more) and not a specific number or rules to live by.

    • @UseLess_dk
      @UseLess_dk  4 роки тому +3

I am not here to say we should stop shopping or buying new things all together. :-) I don't think that would be very realistic, and that is not how I practise minimalism either. But buying less and better is something we could all become better at. x

If you are going to talk about sustainability, then we have to talk about destruction of polyester fabrics and plastics which are our number one problem with the environment. Americans still use and buy plastic every single day. I grew up before plastics existed. I used paper for everything, even garbage bags. I don't buy plastics if at all possible. Our government is doing business with them who are the worst in the world at destroying our wild life and food chain.
