HAM LOG hahaha you made sure no one will miss this time, and trust me I ve watched the complete video lol....on a serious note that second location was literally awesome; any ham radio operators dream location....once again nice job done and keep up the good work...
I had to make it a bit more obvious this time ;) That is the #1 question I get and I say it in almost every video. It's all good. If I didn't want to help, I wouldn't be posting UA-cam videos. Thanks for begin here. 73
Ben actually hooked the coax with his foot, pulled the antenna down and yanked the radio off the table in the backyard. The rails WORK!
Haha. They’re awesome, and they straightened right out. Back to like 98%
Ooff. I can picture that going down in slow motion. Nooooooooooo
Well, this video ticked me over the edge. I was going to wait and keep rails on my Christmas list. Nope, rails are ordered. I don’t want my new FT-818 to be unprotected.
@@timjohnson1105 they are a very solid investment.
@Nunya Dibness I can't bring myself to put velcro on my radio but I've seen many that do.
Awesome video Mike and Evan 👍😎
Thanks Brett, it was an even better time.
Hi Mike, just got home (it's almost 2 a.m. here), have another small beer and am happy about the new video. Tomorrow I'm going out again for the next POTA activation. :) 73 from Germany
That makes me so happy that POTA is a thing in Germany. I don't hear Germany too often, and will most likely be sleeping but email me when you are out and if I get it in time I'll listen for you. I'm good on QRZ.com
Wow, Mike...you just keep the smile on my grizzly old face!! Health is keeping me indoors, for now, but I get to go on POTA activations and watch you kickin' butt (along with my buddy Rob N1NUG). Some of those contacts were pretty amazing! Thanks for the grins, my friend. 73 DE W1NLJ
That just means the world to me. I'm so glad to share the fun and I'm humbled to have you come along on the adventures. Rob is a great guy too. Just not as great at POTA hihi! 73
Another fun video Mike! I activated those parks last month. But I didn't get that close to the lake in Sterling! Cool..
Well now you know our secret hiding place.
Evan Hartman, Evan Hartman! Sri, I couldn't resist. Great collaboration.
I was def star struck too haha
Great going Mike, another nice vid..... cheers
Going to the other side of the state to activate on another Great Lake tomorrow. Lake Michigan this time.
Really did enjoy this pota activation. It looks like y’all were having a lot of fun. Plus I really enjoy watching your videos.

Steve
Thanks so much for watching. POTA is always a lot of fun. Even when it's a struggle to just get 10 contacts. You're still out there playing radio!
Awesome activation!
It was a blast. I need to bring a chair next time though lol!
Thanks for the videos . I just did my first activation last weekend 4120 . The stress lol . First pile up ever . Ugh. I probably sounded like a complete moron , However i had a blast . Thanks for all the info you put together . It made my activation way easier .
Wow, that's awesome! Don't worry about anything. Just go at your own pace. Every activation you will take away something new and it gets easier. Besides, I sound like a complete moron every time I go out. Who cares? It's all about having fun.
Looked like fun, Mike. Great scenery. And two parks at once. 73, joe
It was an absolute blast. It wasn't 2 parks at once, but 2 parks in the same day. 2 parks at once is on the bucket list though. They are out there.
That area is so beautiful!
It really is!
Nice location and video! POTA needs to make an amphibious operator award certificate if you activate a park from the water!
They prob have one. There are so many awards in the POTA program its ridiculous.
Absolutely incredible Mike. For a second I thought you were in the South Pacific with Roly operating from ZL land. Glad you had a fun time That’s what POTA is all about; fun-experiment-try something new Vy 73s … Logs on the Air W1FYG
I know, I heard that ZL station and got really excited! Still, Canary Islands is nothing to scoff at.
Good show Mike! It's so hot down here in GA. Steve / Ham Radio Portable, Ad4xt.
Thanks Steve. Its been hot here this summer but not GA hot.
Great Video and guest , N8NSK
We agree!
For a couple of decades I used to live about a 20min drive from Lake Erie on the Ontario side. About 120 miles up the coast from where you activated. I have been meaning to head down that way again. Will have to do it up with a radio this time. 73s.
Never go anywhere without an HF radio lol! You never know where you might want to throw up an antenna.
I really enjoyed the video of the two parks. Please keep doing the videos great job. The DX Commander antenna does a great job very impressed. And the YAESU FT-891 is a great little radio. 73 AE4OY WILLIAM EM-81UF (OLDYELLA)
Thanks William. I really enjoy making them. The next pota video will prob be out Friday. Spoiler, I'm on the other side of the state on another Great Lake!
Great locations. Super vid 73
Thanks Tim. 73
I am getting my 891 tomorrow, I am FREAKING excited! I also eventually want to get a 20ah bioenno, and the rails. A DXCommander DXpedition would also be sweet, but I'm going to get a WRC SB-1000 first. Holy crap I can't wait, as I'm sure you can tell it's going to be my first personal HF rig. Hope to hear you on the air, 73 de W8IJC!
That is so awesome!!! I remember waiting for my 891. It felt like forever and it was only like 3 days haha. The WRC was my first commercial portable antenna and it works great. Be patient when you are tuning it if you don't have an analyzer. It takes a little bit of up and down the coil to get it. You've made good choices though. Let me know when you get it all sorted. Maybe we could meet somewhere around Sandusky (Callahan auto parts anyone??) and do an activation some day? Bring the troops along too. Best of luck and 73.
@@hamradiotube I will definitely take you up on that someday, though it might be a little while because I can't drive yet lol. (Soon, I'll be 15 next week) Yeah, I figured the SB-1000 would be fidgety. Though it's definitely an awesome and very affordable portable antenna. I can't wait to do digital and a bit of SSB, I'm crazy introverted lol. I'm just thankful that you and all the other ham UA-camrs have such great content for newbies, a year ago I didn't know amateur radio existed, and well look at me now! If you ever wanna shoot me an email, I'm good on QRZ, thanks and 73!
Edit: Oh and also Sandusky would be sweet, it's like a 2 and 1/2 hour drive from me. I think my family wants to go on a road trip when Covid is over, will definitely bring it up.
@@andrewhamop6665 Hi there, I haven't used that antenna that you are talking about but i have to say you can build a dipole for 20 meters in a few min and it will work great . Grab a arborist throw line with a weight at menards for 9 bucks and you are on the air . just an idea . I did my first activation last week and it was a blast . Enjoy yourself
POTA Rocks ! Nice vid... W3RIK
Thanks for watching.
Just wondering what logging software you use, and also what is your call sign? Which park did you activate this time? I have never seen a cb like that before.
I was using electronic paper with a push button controller! The park was Willie Wonka State Chocolate Park. Thats a lake of chocolate syrup behind me, and CB rules!
Another awesome video of two awesome parks! ♥
Thanks for being here. This was a blast!
I do most of my activations from the banks of the Mississippi in Minnesota. We also have a place in the UP. I have operated portable from Lake Superior but not a POTA activation.
It's so much better by the water. I need to get up to the UP one of these days too. Never been.
This is so appealing for some reason...
It's because Parks on the Air is awesome!
Mike, you kind of look like Jason Bonham! Great activation! Take care
You should hear me play the drums and you might change your mind lol! Thanks for watching.
Looks like fun, Mike.
What is the name of the logging software again?
Its called HamRadio3.0Log
Great video. You need to head north and get some of the parks along the lakes in northern Michigan. KC8UGW.
Thanks Thomas. I'll be at Ludington State Park on Sunday with Matt AE4MQ. Prob around 11am ish. On the air maybe noon.
@@hamradiotube That's not Northern Michigan. It starts about there. NK5J from Antrim County, MI Summer QTH.
I know the great reception you get up by the lake, we hit K-1976 and played by the beach, we ended up with 41 contacts making one of the best activations we've done to date. 73 de W8MJL & K8MKL
And yet we still don't have each other in the log!! I don't think the lakes help that much with propagation though. I'm sure they help just because they are wide open spaces, but they ain't salt water. It's more just being where the noise floor is zero. A good amount of contacts we made that were edited out of the video hardly moved the meter, but because the noise floor was so low, we could pull them out like 51. or 31 or 33. We even worked a few QRP stations. 59's weren't given out so much this day, but again, because we were in a place to hear them, we could work them.
Very nice Video. The best 73 from Switzerland, HB9FEV!
Many thanks!
Great job ! Lake Erie is a great lake to be in or around. I am on outher side . Evangola state park NY .sever hams have made many contacts hear over the years . Looks like my car ! got same fusion different antenna . I tent camp with girlfriend and solar charge group 31 AGM battery . 200 watt solar MPPT. using 2 folding mono 100 watts panels into MPPT . small hash noise on 80 meter during day . 20 years ago I made contacts with heathkit tube amp . 2 572/B tubes on 12V 50 amps appx . using 6 golf cart batteries 6V . 500 pep watts 20 meters . not bad. 73's
This was my first time operating on Lake Erie. We were absolutely floored with this location. Thats a heck of a solar set up it sounds like. I'm just getting into solar myself. Thanks for watching. 73
Love operating right near the water , not a lot of large freshwater lakes here in OZ but , mainly salt
I wish this was salt water.
Love your work mate , inspired me to go out and do some portable yesterday
@@craigvk2paw17 Well that just makes my day! Awesome man, thanks.
Great video 👍 (but Peter VK3YE would have been using an antenna made of barbed wire and a tuner made from bed springs).
I know, he's awesome! I'll never reach his level.
Awesome activations Mike. My setup is almost complete to start activating.
And just to be clear, you use Hamlog on your iPad mini with a Bluetooth keyboard?
All in good fun sir. 73
-KD2FMW BeerSnack
Thanks Dan. Glad so many people were able to catch what software I use this time lol! Hope to catch you on the air. 73
Nice to see you and Evan connect. When are you going to show us your mobile setup? And, can we get more details on Josh dropping his 891???
I need to do a vid on the mobile one of these days. I still have some grounding to do though.
@@hamradiotube Grounding? Eh, grounding is for chumps. :)
@@leeharrell67 Yeah but it really does help with the antenna. I still need to get me some flat strap and make it right.
Another good video. But I CAN NOT find that HamLog app on the IOS App Store for either iPad or iPhone.
I can't find it either now. Perhaps the developer took it down. Sad day if thats the case.
Nice! In my neighborhood.
Sweet. Now you know where to go!
Just missing sandwiches and appropriate beverage.
Keep up the good work. 👍
Chud M1PUP QTH London
I pack to light for all that stuff. We got some beef jerky from a legit beef jerky store afterwards. It's amazing.
Great activation guys, can you comeback in February and do another on the shoreline?
Ooooh, I don't know about that. I think I'll be in Florida for Hamcation. We did talk about activating from the ice though. I just really hate the cold.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF Cold weather builds character...anybody can sit around in their shorts at 80F and feel comfortable .
Hey Mike did you guys have trouble operating both radios/antennas at the same time?
Yeah, I was blowing Evan away at the first park so we just took turns. Other times I haven't had problems but every activation is different. It was actually more fun this way because we got to hang out a little bit more and watch each other operate.
A lot of people ahh battled here.
Lol love it!
Flying by the seat of my pants man!
Best line ever!
@@patricksharimccarthy9495 Its not a line, its a life style lol!
I like trains
They are cool.
Nice....
Thank you! Cheers!
Fun, Fun, Fun....!!!!!
That doesn't even begin to describe it, but its close.
There's a challenge for you Mike do what Peter does back pack rig standing in the water. Looks like great fun. cheers vk5cz ..
I will never be half the ham as Peter. Plus this is fresh water. Wouldn't really do much to enhance my signal.
I like also like water. So far my favorite POTA spot is K-2739 Lake James State Park, NC. There is a small overlook looking out to the Linville Gorge. Which I could post photo with my comment. Ken, N4FLG
It really is the best way to operate in my opinion. Photos are prob not allowed for a reason unfortunately. Too many sickos out there.
Jealous 😅 great vid 73 de M0AZE Mike
Hey your country has POTA and you are surrounded by salt water. No excuses.
Great video, I enjoyed your presentation and Q&A at the QSO Today virtual HamFest!! You should look up Justin Sligh (KN4MQR) on facebook in the POTA group, he operates from a Kayak!! Hard to get any closer to the water than that! His goal is to operate an underwater park (there's no land in the park bouandaries) from his kayak, It's really cool!
He's trying to operate the San Pedro Underwater Park, I think he's pretty close to an attempt!
I actually worked him yesterday while on an activation. He wasn’t in his kayak though. Thanks for watch this and the qso today presentation.
@@hamradiotube That's awesome!
Mike, What logging program is that you run??? oh ..... and what is that mini lap top you have?
LOLOLOLOLOL Thanks. One of these days Imma get a contact with you. I like this evan guy too :)
Haha. It's called cramspog. It runs on Mapple software.
@@hamradiotube I knew it!! Already have it on my Trek Phone. Thanks Good Buddy ;)
Turtle Creek I’m about to put it on my Motorola Razr.
@@hamradiotube Roger that .... RazR. Gotchu into my Beeper for emergencies ..,143,,,, LOL
What antenna is that on your car? I'm guessing it's for HF?
It's a Little Tarheel II. 80-6 meters.
@@hamradiotube Thanks. I just put a Trim Mag Mount on my truck for 2m/70cm. Night and day difference, now to get an HF antenna so I can play with too!
@@sweasler Yeah antenna means everything. The Tarheel is quite the compromised antenna but it works for what it is designed for.
Evan is nice.
He's no Ethan though
Yeah he's ok!
What is this world coming to when a buckeye hang out with someone from the state up north. Sad times these are.
On a serious note, have you ever tried any of the portable power stations to power your radios?
How do you think I feel? I had to hang out with someone from Ohio!! I haven't tried any of the portable power stations. I assume you are talking about things like the Goal Zero etc. Most of them are over priced and don't produce the power that is advertised. I'll stick w/ my Bioenno or home made batteries.
@@hamradiotube I was thinking along the lines Rockpals 300 watt. The larger ones I think would be an over kill. I was thinking of using one for a portable set up. Just got my general and was looking for ideas.
@@tangle70 Not familiar with that one, but if it fits your needs, go for it. Congrats on the General too! Watch OH8STN for ham radio battery builds, and Will Prowse for all kinds of portable banks like you are looking at. Lots of great info out there.
I hope you remembered to submit that log.
Of course. Sometimes it takes me a while but I submit all my logs.
Logging a log ... who would have thunk it huh? Cheers
You heard it here first!
