I have learned so much over the last year from people like Rhonda and at almost 58 and a lifetime of obesity i have finally broken through the sugar/carb fog and am now healthier than i have been in a very very long time. Thank you for what you do Rhonda Patrick.

If it’s not already part of your routine, I highly recommend intermittent fasting. I’m 57 and although I’ve never been obese, I was starting to gain flab around the middle, fasting for 16 hours a day and eating healthily has cut that fat in half in under a fortnight! I’m on my way to a six pack for the first time in 30 years!

Hi Dr. Patrick, I've listened to you on the JRE and enjoyed it immensely. I had to chime in here to offer other ways of absorbing Magnesium. Due to IBD I have problems with absorption and was experiencing serious cramping after exercising. I've found that our largest bodily organ (the skin) very helpful in absorbing this radically essential mineral. Now upon returning from a strenuous bike ride I always rub in a generous amount of the mineral into my legs and let sit for at least 20 mins (or until tingly). It's been amazing now not to have to jump out of bed in the middle of the night with traumatizing and immobilizing leg cramps. Happy to know it also increases oxygen transport by way of mitochondrial supplementation.

My family indirectly thanks you too! Question time: after seeing what seems like hype on magnesium oil/spray, I had decided to make own. It this a viable way to take in magnesium? Is that even legit? I noticed ZERO difference and the product has become a catalyst for a few jokes in our house. I still assuming that dark leafy greens are best, but does the oil 'boost' levels (so to speak)? Thanks Rhonda, you rock.

Besides the intake of greens, I consume Ground Flaxseed which has an average of 13% Daily Value or 51mg of Magnesium. The advantage of FS is that it can easily be sprinkled on everything...soups,,salads...drinks.FS offers the benefits of Fiber,Omega-3 fatty acid, protein and SDG lignans. Since not all FS are created equal. it's highly recommended that Organic Ground Premium FS be used. Walmart actually carries it near the pharmacy section.I stay away from FS OIL since it can easily go rancid.

Thank you for the excellent summary.
I am finding myself a little wary of the idea of relying on those foods, suggested at the end of the overview, for magnesium due to reading of a research addressing mineral absorption.
The questions are with regard to whether the uptake of worthwhile amounts of magnesium, from various different foods, can unfold in the presence of phytates (a source of which are seeds) and oxalates (found in spinach) - notwithstanding their reduction being possible with some strategies such as fermentation, boiling, sprouting and so on - seeing as the very same strategies often also result in the concomitant reduction of mineral content - magnesium, as well as others such as zinc (in the case of boiling, oxalate reduction is achieved by it being leached into the cooking water).
Some phytate reduction strategies (such as fermentation) do seem to be potentially able to achieve better results than other methods.
For instance: "While soaking chopped nuts led to reductions in phytate, the mineral content was also compromised, with no overall improvements observed in the phytate: mineral molar ratios. Therefore, there is no evidence to support claims that activating nuts reduces phytate content to the extent which allows for greater nutrient bioavailability."
Kumari, S. (2018). The effect of soaking almonds and hazelnuts on Phytate and mineral concentrations (Doctoral dissertation, University of Otago) - ourarchive.otago.ac.nz/bitstream/handle/10523/7938/KumariShivani2017MDiet.pdf

@@elenap3637 Thank you Elena. Really? That is really great to hear. What structure did your study follow / how many semesters have you had to get through so far?
It does sound from what you're saying that indeed we all have to be remain cautious then when it comes what we are being told by people with [even what might appear to be impressive] qualifications, discussing anything that deviates even slightly from what is decisively within their realm of expertise and experience ... (though the nutrition research science is really interesting, so her curiosity is much appreciated ... ) All the best for the remainder your final semester.

Good point! Articulated expressions. Supplements seem to be the only way.

Lots of pros and cons to consider ... here's Rhonda's take on anti-nutrients (in short, for her, the good outweighs the bad, w particular strategies)

Also heard you on Joe Rogan and love that you are sharing this info. As a producer/photographer, among other things I have some superficial comments. Get a lavalier mic (not expensive) so you don't have to shout and you can talk in a conversational tone. You will be more comfortable and it will come across better than having to bark your content out to be heard. Everyone in Film and TV uses face powder - a shiny face just doesn't come across well. There are lots of types, you will be amazed at the difference it makes. Also, it is a subjective thing but you have great things to say and it is worth being aware that you should work on speaking without blinking. Blinking subjectively communicates that you are unsure or untruthful. Not that you come across that way at all thought it is distracting. It can just be a nervous habit, but it is something that can be changed. You are a brilliant person and have learned so many things, this is just one more skill. Cheers! I'm tuned and watching and appreciating!!!
