Hi Vengeance Early, thanks for watching from Florida! I'm in zone 9b as well in Cali 😀. While it's great to start them super early where you live, I encourage you to start some now! You'll love seeing them grow indoors (or start them outdoors in little trays in 3-4 hours of sun and transplant to the garden in 8 weeks or so). The short day or day neutral will be well suited for your area. Shallots would be fun to grow - always open to trying varieties I haven't grown before. Appreciate the visit!

I've been trying to grow onions for months with dismal results. I put the seeds in the refrigerator and finally a few are poking through the ground! Looking forward to growing onions with you this year Kim!

Thanks CaliKim ! It's great that we live in the same zone. Your advise along with Gary's is very helpful. It's very interesting how different parts of the country garden. Most of my raised bed gardening is over and done by June. It's not just because of the high heat, but our three months of rain, June, July and August make gardening an uphill battle. Our onions just can't take it. It's an upside down garden world here. Going to try Artichokes this year, but I was thinking that you have the perfect climate for growing them. Thanks again , I watch your channel all the time to get really good tips.
My favorite, Vidalia onions, back in the day one of my co-workers would special order them from Georgia. Those of us that were brave would eat onion sandwiches on rye, with Grey Poupon, lettuce & tomatoes. You'd swear there was meat in between those slices, and for whatever reason, it wouldn't leave you with bad breath, that was some good eating. Here in the Inland Empire, I haven't had much success in growing them, they would germinate, then stop growing. I won't give up though.
This was a great video!! I just planted all my onions today. I’m glad I learned about the grow lights. I only have 2 shelves with lights so I guess when I start my other plants I should remove the onions cells a few hours a day so they do not get the same light time. Thank you!

This is absolutely one of the best explanations of the long day v. short day onion I've seen. I hope you'll do a future video of transplanting the seed starts into containers or a bed. Oh, and how to store. I tried onions a few years back (starter sets) - and what a mess. I didn't know a THING about conditions for growing or my "onion" zone. I ended up with golf-ball size onions - such a disappointment. :) But onward and upward: this year - trying again and definitely starting from seed. I loved the Tropea because it developed decent sized onions in zone 8b and they are tasty. I planted in the fall and harvested in Spring.

I think I’m late for starting Onion seedling I live in NC and the last frost date is April 30th. So can I start some seedlings towards the fall autumn time since onions like cooler whether?

My onions are in their second week of growth, central Alabama, and I have about a gazillion alpine strawberry sprouts. My Lettuce, endive and Five Color Beet Swiss Chard, are at the end of the first week of growth. Potatoes are next. I'll be chitting the first batch Tuesday, and planting them on Thursday. An unexpected hard freeze, and another one coming Sunday night, may have been the end of my peas. I'll replant, this time inside, next week, and transplant them into the garden at the end of the month. March is a big month for cool weather vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
