    You're gonna like that Noreena jasper. It's very ancient material, some 2.6 billion years old or so. It can be fussy about obtaining a really high polish and you want to be wary of fractures along the color lines. But it's worth it, it's very beautiful material when worked.
    It's probably for the best that I didn't go to the show, I'd have a pickup full of fancy rocks and no money to get home.😉

    The Ethiopian opals are my favorite!

  • @joeenglish69
    @joeenglish69 3 місяці тому

    Hi, love the rocks. The opals being destroyed by water sounds solveable. Wht not use a very light oil as the cooler and wash the disks off with brake cleaner? It removes oil and drys in seconds.

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  2 місяці тому

      The water doesn't destroy the opals, it just removes the color temporarily, as the opal soaks up water. When it's dry, the color returns - but it's tricky to cut when you're working on a clear rock.

  • @raystevens687
    @raystevens687 3 місяці тому

    Hay I really like those opals very nice I had an idea what would you think about having Theo take one of your opals and have shape it like a ring shape maybe a 8 12 angles on the stones. I just saw he got some stones from some rock in the Dakotas. And did some rings stones they very nice. Anyway hope you like the Idea.

    Tiger iron is messy to cut. I had 2 60 lb pieces I cut and my oil was nasty red. Clean the oil after cutting. So just wait till you’re ready to change oil and cut it before changing.

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  3 місяці тому

      Good to know! Jasper does the same thing. I have an Everclean oil cleaner on my big saw - I'll be sure to use that one to cut.

    Kate, being as you just got back from Tucson, it seems like a good time to ask you this. In one of the last videos you did before going to the show you cut a variety of agates; with one of those being a Laguna Agate. I've been told the area where it's mined has been sold and the new owner is no longer selling rough rock. Being as you had some to cut, do you know if a person is still able to buy natural/unsliced material? I am hopeful you can solve this mystery for me... and possibly even suggest where I might be able to find/buy some.

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi, Grant! I bought mine from Highland Park Lapidary - they seem to have some available.

  • @marykayniedermeyer8344
    @marykayniedermeyer8344 3 місяці тому

    I love the Ethiopian opals! I have tried to buy them while in Ethiopia but the government won't allow them to be sold there due to an issue with taxation. They are taxed for exporting so they can't sell them in country. I did find a few at a gem store but they were super expensive. I think it was just because I was from the US. Everything gets more expensive if you have white skin.

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  3 місяці тому

      Wow, that's interesting! Guess you probably would have to find a miner and buy directly from him - and then not mention that it's in your luggage. Oh, wait, that's smuggling! :D

    • @marykayniedermeyer8344
      @marykayniedermeyer8344 3 місяці тому

      @@KatyDidRocks I did know a miner! Unbelievable. He gave me bluish turquoise rocks (Amazonite) that I brought home and tumbled. Sarawit was his name. I went to his house when the electricity was out. We looked in his pails with a flashlight. He had rubies. He was so excited to show me. He had went south to mine but was disgruntled with it and I saw him back in Addis Ababa the next trip I made there. What a guy!
