In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music by Living Colour for the first time on the channel...and I'm going straight for their iconic song Cult of Personality. It's been years since I've heard this tune, and for this video I'm making use of footage from the band's recent appearance at Rock in Rio 2022. As an added bonus, Steve Vai joins them on stage. I hope you enjoy!

“Open letter to a landlord”is a must listen . Saw them live in 89 in NYC- incredible
Incredible song
Love that song. Haven't thought about it in years. I'll have to go pull the album out now. Saw them in Clemson when they opened for the Stones.
@@WhiskeyLore I just saw them in NYC on Halloween. They all still have the chops. Paul Shaffer performed with them, and few others and Flava Fav.

One of the most underrated bands of all time. They are so much more than "Cult of Personality". As amazing as their debut album is, I think their sophomore album "Times Up" is even better. Their last 2 albums " The Chair in the Doorway" and "Shade" are quite strong as well.
So much great music from these legends!
This live recording is good, but you owe it to yourself to watch the original video or listen to the studio version - so much better. I saw Corey Glover do a solo show in a small, quaint venue - that dude has more soul in his little finger than most folks have in their entire bodies. Amazing.
The live version on the Arsenio Hall show is absolutely fire of them in their prime with the original lineup. But this is cool too!
Also search out their SNL performance of Cult... It's FIRE.
I photographed Living Colour a couple years back, and I shot Steve Vai just last week, both in St. Louis. Both are legendary and still going for a reason, even if they haven't gotten the iconic status they deserve.
This particular song is still relevant to this day. 2023 is the 35th anniversary of this song and album! They need to be inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!✊🏿✊🏿
Loved LIVING COLOUR as soon as they came out. Actually saw them open for The Rolling Stones and Mick was just phoning it in that night. Corey and the boys were SOOOO AWESOME!
You are correct in that alot of people probably just injured the music and rhythm of this song and that's great. But you are very correct that it a very heavy meaning and it still does today and is very relevant. Like alot of other songs one comes to mind and you did it also and they will be playing alot soon. ELP I believe in father Christmas. Thanks for enlightening us.
That show was amazing, one of the best of the day I was there !!!!!!!!!! They rocked everything!!
King's X, King's X, King's X
Yes,yes,yes!!!
My friend, I am there with you!!!
Me too! Yes Yes Yes!!
Yes!!
@@markholden8538 Your favorite King's X songs?
Vivid is a fantastic album! Fun fact - Vivid was released on the same day as Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime on the 2nd of May that same year.
Such a criminally underrated band who have also recorded some amazing covers too. Their last album Shade from 2017 was incredible! And speaking on the subject of covers, I saw them in concert in Perth, Australia shortly after Chris Cornell's death and their emotional tribute to Cornell gave the audience goosebumps. They played the Soundgarden classic 'Blow Up the Outside World' and the tears in Vernon's eyes not to mention Glover looking as if he was about to break down at the end - it's one of those moments you may never see again...
Cool to see Steve Vai in that performance too, I have to say!
Great song that has stood the test of time. I love the contrast here between Vernon's wild go-for-it soloing, and Vai's controlled sizzle.
Very cool you did this song. Will Calhoun is a good friend of my brother's. I have told Vernon Reid many time how much I love his playing, but could never take his guitar tone. Gotta give Corey Glover credit, he sounds great!
I was just thinking: Glover sounds the same as he did in 1988. How many other singers can say that?
I graduated high school when the album was released back in 1988. The first video and song was for Middle Man. This song was the second single I heard as well as the video. They were all over BET and MTV. Not too many black rock groups back then with the exception of Fishbone.
Remember, again driving to and from work in '88. Just finished Grad School...rough go. This song came on and in almost lost control of the car.😎😃🎶..so direct and hard driving...
I suggest doing it again w the studio version. VRs guitar work,..stellar.
I saw Corey Glover in 2018 on México City with the OFICIAL DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE... singing all the Bowie Classics songs! Awesome!! pd.- Vernon Reid the leader guitar was student of Robert Fripp, King Crimson leader guitar
One of the best and most iconic guitar riffs ever!
I listen to this song once a week and usually it is through a react video because I love seeing people discover it. Having watched many of your videos in the past, I'm happy to see you've made your way around to this one!
Saw living colour live a few years back they are all phenomenal, singer is incredible and their drummer is just insane
didn't know that collab was out there. Thanks Doug
Another Hugely influential act from the same exact time period whom Living Colour most highly praises!
Kings X- " Goldilox " (88)
Never broke up, still going strong with original members (a trio).
I have not seen this concert before...they still got it I'd say.
For the record, this is CM Punk's entrance theme.
hope he returns soon from his injury
Great song, with a still relevant message. Thanks for reviewing Doug!!
Vernon Reid... the talent that guy has is amazing and he's good at describing guitar playing. There's a lot of great guitarists that can't convey or teach effectively. Edward Van Halen always admitted he himself was a bad guitar teacher. lol
I enjoy hearing songs that are about something different than a relationship or love song.
I really like Vernon's guitar style. He was an influence for me. I think they're on Steve Vai's label. When Steve was doing UA-cam videos I wrote a lengthy complaint about some of his philosophy, and he actually bothered to write back. It was a long reply too. So I've been an even bigger fan of his since then.
The irony right? And I think they meant it that way. Cory keeps saying "I" over and over. I remember watching them do this live on Arsenio Hall and I was so excited. I think I recorded it on VHS. Arsenio had Megadeth on twice I think. Vernon was playing an ESP guitar back then.
Anyway. I think you play that main riff on guitar with your middle finger on the G and pull of the F note on the D string to D and then E.
I was there in this rock in rio and it was perfect. I can't describe the feeling of see them with Steve Vai.
Corey Glover still sounds exactly the same. It's like his voice hasn't aged at all.
So criminally underrated! When I first listen to Vivid I was blown away, so powerful and funky. Saw them every time they come to Chile (about 5 times, since 1992), and they're still my favorite live band, all incredible musicians. Please do some tunes from Time's Up and Stain, you won´t regret it.
I think the lyrics mean even today than when the song came out. Great timeless song.
Awesome musicians with off the charts energy. Saw them with their original lineup at SUNY New Paltz. They set the gymnasium on fire. LITERALLY!!!
Fantastic!
This song is a finger-breaker for sure. Took me weeks to get it down for a cover band.
One of the coolest riffs in rock history. Great tune.
Love this track and a great little analysis.
I finally got to see to Living Colour a few years ago in a small venue called the Space in Westbury Long Island. Absolutely phenomenal.
Cult of personality has never been more real and it has not changed. I love that he just laid it out bare in the lyrics. Just like many songs of the past, this one is still very relevant. The only thing that has changed is technology and how it is used as far as I see it. Out of the past 6000 years, there has been less than 400 years of total peace on the planet. From swords to missiles. Mankind doesn't change. What do you think it take to bring total peace on the planet?
This song is in the last ever The Walking Dead, (20th Nov 2022). They used it on loudspeakers to draw in all the Zombies. I guess the undead have good taste as well.
This track came out when I was a freshman in highschool. We watched the music video on MTV (when they played music videos) and Vernon Reid melted my brain with his guitar playing. I was instantly hooked. I didn't know a person could do that and went to Disc Jockey record store (RIP) to buy it on cassette because CDs weren't a thing yet LOL!
This song still sends chills up my spine and it's even more important in today's political climate.
First, I see you’ve reached 250, 000! Congratulations!
staind was criminally underrated....the tracks postman and go away are epic rock tracks...their songs are socially aware without being preachy...and corey glover has a remarkable voice
This song is an all-time banger. One one of the best rock anthems ever.
Wow, great performance, I wasn't aware of this, thanks for bringing it to my attention. How to play the riff has been a point of contention for a long time.
there's a video somewhere here on YT where Vernon plays it slowly; there's a little more to it than one might think. :)
Wow, fascinating insight about the composition being so entrancing that we can easily headbang away without realizing what the song is about.
Great to see Living Colour come around again...
Live on Arsenio Hall show is the best version.
I'd like to see you do something off Steve Vai's "Sex and Religion" with Devin Townsend on lead vocals, it's one of my favorite albums 🤘
Got to see them live in 2016 or 17. Cant remember. But they and janes addiction were in Cleveland
Thanks for having Moody Blues on your shelf, it seems to me that of the great 60-70s progressive band they have been all but forgotten
As A math teachear I am every day traying to make people only to understand how music can make the day for all of us, TEACHERS.
they've said "Vote!" and so we did it! #ForaBolsonaro
The drums and vocals are amazing and guitar
Been a fan of Living Colour from day one. Cult of Personality is one of my favorite songs of theirs. The main guitar riff is basically The Wanton Song on Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin.
Damn… Corey just sounds just as good if not better than ever.
I've seen them 2-3 times in the past few years, and I can attest: hell yeah, Corey still has it all -- range, passion, all of it. Whole band still has it, in fact.
@@aka.Mr.French super jealous that you’ve seen them live. I remember when they hit MTV and I was hooked with that guitar riff
@@jaimeecherivel2927 yep, same here. Didn't watch MTV much, but had it on one day back in 1988 or '89, and... OMG, who are these guys, this is great!!! They do still tour, so try to catch them while you can.
Anyone who tells you they understand that guitar solo is either lying , or their name is Vernon Reid.
Vernon Reid is rightfully praised by the guitarati but woefully unknown by the general public. I have two Guitar World magazine issues from decades ago.
One has Jimi on the cover (‘85). The other has Vernon Reid (‘93). Both are prized possessions.
Evergreen, but so relevant and important today. Great, great song.
Living Colour is R&B/Funk/Metal/Fusion... and they are beyond camparison with anyone..., awesome musitians... they come from jazz fusion... vivid, times up, stain... just awesome albums always... check em out
You were 11 when this came out? Dang, I am WAY older than you. I was married to my first husband, so, I'M OLD! Love your reviews-too many fine qualities to list!
My buddy Roy and I used to go hang out with Vernon Reid when he ran the Black Rock Coalition and damn he is a killer guitarist! Note: I'm not black and Roy is ... never mattered!
Somewhere out there BRC pressed a sampler cd of member artists. Mine was stolen in a house burglary. I was friends with the members of Monkey Meet. All such great artists.
What a banger of a song. So much grezt stuff in their Ouvre. One of my favourite bands of all. Stain is an utterly amazing album. Not easy listening.
For a punch in the gut listen to flying from the collideoscope album.
Two of the worst guitar tones on stage together.
There new album is great
Starting off... I love your clips. I'm a home guitarist for 30 yrs. I enjoy the way you call out notes. If you haven't already, please enjoy Dokken, tooth and nail live from Japan. Would enjoy your feedback from it. Love you work.
Me too guitar guy. Love Lynch, one of my fav's.
It's funny. Two days ago I downloaded the album. This is the best track off it. Excellent.
Doug, Love your analysis of music. Can you please please do some old Al Dimeola. Like Mediterranean Sundance. Thank you.
The harmonic riff he plays during the chorus is pretty awesome!!Might not hear it here!!
A song that is more relevant now than ever
Just saw you're reactions for the first time today. On one hand, as a metalhead, I like hearing your analysis of Dream Theater and Opeth and the like...but I think the videos where you truly shine are where you tackle explicitly political songs, such as this one and Killing in the Name...because the messages espoused are pretty radical. And given your background of being a classical composer, you do have a bit more of a connection to the "upper crust" of society...which are some of the people those songs speak out against.
So to hear you acknowledge those messages and also at least to a degree sympathize and champion their voices, is very refreshing.
TL;DR: I think your best reacts are those where you mix your theory knowledge AND engage in the radical political themes of the songs. Great work.
Forgot to add...regarding this performance. I'm honestly amazed how well Corey's voice has held up given the fact that at the time of that performance he was only a couple months shy of his 58th birthday.
And also, I alluded to it a bit, but seriously, kudos on the summary of Nikita Khrushchev's speech. Definitely not something I expect to hear for a reaction of this song. Well done.
That double-time bit at the very end is how the original studio version of the song ended.
Vai is all over the place these days!
Well, if you wanna KNOW what they're playing, watch the original video version and you can SEE the chords they're playing AND hear the song a LOT better. It's also a LOT more exciting than this video.
And, while you're at it, take a look at the Fishbone video, "Servitude" and their song, "The Warmth Of Your Breath".
'sI've loved Living Colour since the 80s and saw them just last year. You owe it to yourself to go down the rabbit hole of at least the 1st 3 albums! Vernon Reid is one of the guitar greats, though he is relatively unknown outside of the music geek space. D's/earlyoug Wimbish on bass is just magical - again, one of the best in the business! All this said, Vivid, Time's Up, and Stain touch on so many topics that are as relevant today as they were in the late 80's/early 90's. Poverty, race, environment, politics...it's all there from a different vantage point than most of us are used to.
I have vinyl LP... somewhere :D I love "Memories Can't Wait"
You really need to react to Vai's The Attitude Song. It is one of those songs that isn't a constant display of his playing abilities, but it is so weird that you just know it's him.
A lot of people don't realise Vernon Reid is English 🙂
Corey sounds great!
This is in fact the riff from the Wanton Song, an underrated Led Zeppelin song.
I would like to see a Metal Monday with Meshuggah - Dancers to a Discordant System.
"Meshuggah has become known for their innovative musical style and their complex, polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. They rose to fame as a significant act in extreme underground music, became an influence for modern metal bands, and gained a cult following. The band was labelled as one of the ten most important hard rock and heavy metal bands by Rolling Stone and as the most important band in metal by Alternative Press. In the late 2000s, the band was an inspiration for the djent subgenre." - Wikipedia
What's your favorite color?
Is funk/rock madness.
Extremely cool
Leave it alone is also a killer riff
I saw them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989, they should have been the headliners.
Hi Doug, of course you're captain on your ship, but i think we need the Maiden mondays back, 6 days are still available fotr other bands...
@Doug if you want unique, John Farnham (Live) “Your The Voice”.
Fully agree with Neil Esposito, Open Letter is a powerful song. I love the record, but that one moves me.
Hey Doug, love your videos thank you! Could you react to any of shawn lane s music from his powers of ten or tri tone fascination albums please?
Or another suggestion if you are tired of guitarists, Brazil national anthem!!
Thank you and keep up the good work
Hey Doug, I think you should to a breakdown on the instrumental Voice of the Soul by the band Death. It is a beautiful song I think you would really enjoy it.
Doug and I convinced the cult of personality to drink the kool-aid.
About this song, first and foremost - that is (still) a great riff!!
It's, "Only YOU can set me free".
Doug: that’s one way to finish it
Corey: no
As long as things keep going the way they are this song will be relevant forever. And even when things change.. this song will be relevant forever.🙏✌🖖. Btw, they got a lot of great songs. They're worth checking out. Keep up the great work
Doug check out Fates Warning on 1 of your metal l mondays, would like to see your reaction to the song "Without a Trace" the music and John Arch's vocals TY!
Useless trivia: Corey Glover was in the movie Platoon.
Can I do a suggestion here? "Golden Country" by REO Speedwagon, from their second album.
Wow. That's a very...charitable...interpretation of Nikita Krushchev. But then again, anyone following Stalin would look like a saint in comparison. It's a great song.
7:17/7:20/7:25 - two quite different leaders, indeed, though I will just say that even Gandhi had a dark side.
Vernon Reid ... nuff said.
Has Doug ever reacted to any of Thomas Dolby’s works?
I really like their second album, though it's more funk/R&B than the first.
got to do ther e full Vivid albu,m Doug
Manowar:"Heart of steel" or "The crown and the ring" (with orchestra or not)
