In this #throwbackthursday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm accessing my Fan Favorites video from June of 2022 to share my reaction of Radar Love and The Twilight Zone from Golden Earring. It turns out that I recognized both of these songs but never had known the band behind the music. This was originally included in our 'Favorite Road Trip Songs' Fan Favorites video, and I can definitely understand why after hearing them anew. I hope you enjoy!

Awesome Doug, Golden Earring are our nations pride. One of the longest existing bands in the original lineup. Sadly they had to stop because their lead guitarist George Kooymans is too ill to perform, he has ALS. 😢

@Ruben I remember looking up Golden Earring a few years ago, and was shocked to find out they were together in ORIGINAL LINEUP for 60 years! That's got to be some kind of record for an original lineup. Class band with fantastic songs. edit: I just checked, and it appears that while a line-up was together for a very long time, it was not the same for 60 years, as I had originally thought. I stand corrected. Anyway, the band formed in 1961, and broke up in 2021. 60 years is a long time regardless.

    Welcome to the Netherlands!
Let's bring a big salute to guitarist George Kooijmans, who is going through rough times.
By the way, on Radar Love, guitars are played by Kooijmans with Eelco Gelling, who is a fantastic blues player. In the live version from their first live album, also featuring Gelling, the song is a lot longer. Eelco Gelling totally blows the solo part skyhigh.

A lot of people only know them for a couple of songs, the ones you played in fact.

This song came out when MTV was young and many record companies did their best to get their bands on that medium, a Dutch well-known director (Dick Maas) made the video clip. When you watch it, that segment that Doug found too long is a nice background to the visual story that unfolds.

I think that the extended repetitive section in "Twilight Zone" may have been reflective of how an isolated spy may feel while they're going through the motions of life, waiting for a return of direction and purpose. During that sort of time, the spy would have just been marking time, or as some people may describe it, spinning his wheels and getting nowhere. The night weighs heavy on his guilty mind, he can't make a connection to a contact or superior, there's nothing to encrypt or decode.

Fun Fact, they never composed music the traditional way. They just played tunes and worked from there. They said in Interviews that don't always know what they are doing, but it works so why change it xD
My dad always been a mega fan, and when I was 14 (40 now) he decided it was time I began to learn to appreciate real music instead of the crap I was listening too, so he took me to my very concert. Back then their Burning Stuntman was just released and we went to a unplugged concert of them. It was a great experience but my love for their music was truly awakened when my dad took me to a plugged concert a few years later. After that they took a break from performing as the Golden Earring for a while, each having their own projects. Once they returned me and my dad went every year to a concert of theirs, even the 50th anniversary , till we sadly heard about George. We never knew we had visited our last concert till a few months later :(
One more funfact, they were growing big in the States as well with Radar Love and Twillight zone, however George got really homesick. So they decided as a band they would break off their adventure in the States, even though that could have made them world famous and return to the Netherlands. They always kept the mantra, we rock together, or we don't play at all as the Golden Earring. They would never replace any bandmember (after they swapped the singer and drummer for Barry and Ceasar). So when George got ill, they just stopped with the band. They will not replace him, they will never perform as the Golden Earring again, cause they rocked together, or not at all as the Earring.

I was entranced by Radar Love when it first came out. I had no idea Twilight Zone was also by Golden Earring (I was not a big fan radio-friendly 80’s Rock.) Both are great road trip songs.

Cool songs, but my favorite by them is "She Flies on Strange Wings." There's a video for the song with the band set up on the rooftop of an apartment building. Awesome song!

Yes, that is on the rooftop of the Amsterdam Hilton. 1972. More rock history : from that same rooftop Herman Brood, another Dutch rocker with great song “ Saturday Night” went jumping from that roof ‘without a parachute’ (in his own farewell words on paper) on July 11 2001. He toured with Golden Earring and George guitarplayer of GE produced some of his albums. Herman remains a great rock ‘n roll star out of the Netherlands , especially known for “Saturday Night”, his lifestyle and his paintings.

Vanilla Queen is probably my favorite Golden Earring song. The dynamics and the horns at the end 🤘🧙‍♂️🤘

Cool stuff. I saw GE open for Crimson in 75 in Central Park @ Wollman Rink. Great concert but they were booed off after the set. They even threw fireworks at them during radar love. The drummer threw his sticks at the person, almost hitting me, as I was in the second row, stage center. Body guards the size of Schwarzenegger chased him. Can only imange what they did to him. Brings back some great memories of that concert.

I think you would absolutely love the acoustic version of this that they did. Search for Golden Earring - Twilight Zone acoustic and its the video labeled from 1992. You can actually buy the entire acoustic performance they did from 1992 and its called Golden Earring - Naked Truth and Twilight Zone and even Radar Love that they do acoustically is perfect

Was even at the time banned on MTV and other places in the USofA. They had to make a censored/cleaned up version.. but even that cleansed version would be hard to get on TV today... Killings, shooting and other violence no issue at all, but seeing nipples... Aaah panic galore

It wasn’t about seeing nipples but he kissed a “nun” in the video. Although in the story it was an accident (he thought he was kissing his fantasy girl) but it was enough to get the video banned at the time.
