  • Hey everyone!
    With hall of fame voting coming to a conclusion later this month, I wanted to examine 1 more player on the ballot. Scott Rolen has made significant progress with early tracker results, but will he keep the momentum and be enshrined into Cooperstown? Will Rolen's name ever be enshrined in Cooperstown? That's what we will be answering today. I hope you guys enjoy the video.

    May 10th 2005. On an infield ground ball, Scott Rolen runs full speed into Dodgers first baseman Hee-Seop Choi, obliterating his shoulder. Rolen would return intermittently throughout the 2005 season, but his career was never the same. Rolen lost full range of motion in his throwing arm, and his power at the plate dropped significantly. Rolen would go on to win 2 more Gold Gloves, but offensively he never recovered.
    If that injury never happens, Rolen conservatively wins 11 Gold Gloves, has 375 HR's, 2,500 Hits, and a .290 career average. First ballot HOF, no question.

  • @gadzooks5398
    @gadzooks5398 3 роки тому +2

    Great video, sir. One extra thing I'll add that I think is important is not only could Rolen be at a disadvantage due to lack of counting stats and accolades, but the Hall of Fame voting itself could end up hurting him as well... Third base is the least represented position in the Hall of Fame; only 17 of them in total and the HOF considers Paul Molitor a third baseman, although i would say he was more of a DH. Once you take out Molitor and look at the people who were voted in by the writers... that 17 turns into 7. Pie Traynor, Eddie Mathews, Brooks Robinson, George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Wade Boggs, and Chipper. That being said, if at the end of this year's vote, he sits greater than 50%, I think Scott will eventually be the 8th. Keep up the good work.

    This is an interesting case, Rolen was a good player. He was solid offensively and excellent defensively. Whenever cases like this pop up I think of Ozzie Smith, now I'm not making direct comparisons Ozzie wasn't anywhere as good as an offensive player as Rolen but Rolen wasn't as good as a defensive player as Smith, so what happens? My guess is that he doesn't make the HOF... at least not this year. There is for me a secondary issue/award he might not get as well and that is a team retiring his number. The longest stint he had with one team was the Phillies and that was 5+ seasons but that stint didn't end well. So the next viable option would be the Cardinals where he had 3+ good seasons and 1 bad but I don't see the Cardinals retiring a number for that limited service. So he loses again.

    There’s 263 players currently in the HOF. Only 17 of them played 3rd base. 3rd base is the least represented position in the HOF. There’s even two fewer 3rd basemen than catchers. Rolen should get in with today’s emphasis on WAR. He’s also never had any type of suspicion about juicing. The Phillies have another player who will have a similar argument to make the HOF. Chase Utley’s career numbers were badly hurt by not getting to play every day until age 26 and his knees falling apart. He never even finished higher than 7th in MVP voting. But he was probably the smartest base runner in the game and he played a very solid second base. He was a phenomenal offensive player for that position. From 2005-2009 he led all second basemen in almost every important statistic and was 2nd in the sport in rWAR in that time period. By the old voting standards he wouldn’t have a prayer. But thanks to WAR being so important players now get much more credit for being great base runners and fielders.

    Here’s why he makes it. Next to catcher 3B is the next hardest position to play. In the same breath defensively as Schmidt and Robinson. Top 5 all time is worth something. Best arm at third, excellent base runner, offensive numbers better than Ron Santo a HOFer. Plus in the middle of Bonds Sosa Clemens, and Schilling being removed Scott Rolen did it right, gave his shoulder to the game without complaint so sometimes the good guy gets rewarded.
    Also I have his game worn spikes signed from his rookie season. ROY season. Live in Philly, bought them at the Phillies ALS auction. I’m actually trying to give them back to him if he does make it. Or maybe donate them to Cooperstown.

His career BA is already starting to go under 300. He hasn't won any major batting titles. His best season was his rookie year or his second, and his MVP was an elimination. Based on this video, Nolan Arnado is just the reincarnation of Scott Rolen. So in short... 100% a HOF.

    So what about players like Bobby Bonilla and Bernie Williams who have almost the same stats as Scott Rolen ? If just a little over 300 career Homeruns, 2,000 career Hits , 1,000 runs and 1,100 RBIs is Great than let's put all the other retired players and future players in with the same just above average stats in the Hall of Fame ! Utterly Ridiculous ! He got in because he was favored

    Playing his first several seasons at Vet Stadium, it's no surprise he had durability issues. He played too hard to last in that place.
