  • The new E Pace from Jaguar has class leading looks that's for sure. The question is, which engine to choose ? I got to drive the 180 BHP Diesel and 250 BHP Petrol variants back to back. This video puts you in the drivers seat of this exciting new SUV. The cars were also very different trim levels, so I also talk about which trim options you should consider.
    A huge thanks to Harwoods Jaguar Chichester for letting me have access to their brand new demonstrators. If you want to try one out for yourself then give them a ring to book a test drive.

    PRICES - The E Pace starts at just over £28k for a FWD D150 Manual. The D180 AWD like the one I drove first starts at £32.5k but in HSE trim is £42k. The P250 AWD in S trim is £32,600. I would want the P300 AWD HSE but that starts at £48,400 !

    One of your best reviews. Lack of Apple CarPlay concern but possibly a lack of a spare wheel even more concerning. Your videos are refreshingly different from the usual youth bloggers - keep up the good work in 2018!

    3..2..1... and we are in the dark Iol.I recently had Farnell Jaguars XE R Sport diesel demo for a week with the 180 ps engine and it was a decent enough lump. The 300 E pace looks to be the car of choice for the gent who likes to really press on though. Great video as usual. Merry Christmas Ped and to all your viewers

    Yet another well balanced review Peter. I have to say, it's not jumping out at me. Not a huge fan of the shape. Everything is starting to look the same & were it not for the grille & badges I wouldn't have known it from the many that are out there. Price range looks comparable to the competition, just not a consideration for me. Now the F Pace .............. hmm.
    Have a great Christmas & look forward to seeing you in 2018.
    Happy New Year & many thanks for all the great reviews you've done for us during 2017.

    Another great review
    Yes an big difference in performance with the petrol.The car felt as if it had way more power in the engine.The noise was also better.
    There is a lot of head room even for a guy like you who’s tall.
    Are you more than 6ft in hight.
    The desiel version has a really luxurious interior.

      They are a good size balance. Enough room inside but not too big to drive and park !

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 років тому

      Yes, more a Qashqai than a CRV in size. Not that there's a massive difference between those in exterior dimensions, but the interior of the CRV is more generous in most dimensions than the F-Pace.
      Which of these is more desirable? It depends whether engine performance and badge are important to the individual buyer. Personally if I was spending £40k plus on a car then my current favourites are the Velar and XC60. If equipment and value and a perfectly acceptable performance in a compact SUV, then a high end Qashqai. Wouldn't bother with 4wd at under 200hp because all it adds is weight and cost for no gain for 95% of drivers 99% of the time. Over 200hp and 400Nm torque, yes 4wd gives generally more stable acceleration. Then there's that couple of days every five years or so when it snows. Does one need to travel in conditions where 2wd cars will probably be blocking the road anyhow?

  • @lydiagould3090
    @lydiagould3090 6 років тому +1

    Enjoyed watching this vid.The petrol version really appealed to me with the extra torque, and looked fun to drive. I agree ,if you`re spending that sort of £ a classier interior would have made it more appealing.
    I would love to see you drive and review the Subaru impreza WRX. The reason being, that I am not(yet) a good enough driver to really put it through its paces on the public road.

    Interesting. Both 2.0 litre? Does that increase to 3.0 as you go to the high power? Interesting too as you note that the F Type gear stick and interior styling touches have been brought through instead of the gear dial on the rest of the autos across the range. Good work and it looked fun! 👍

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 років тому +1

      Hi Ryan. All the different power options for both diesel and petrol are from a 2.0L engine. I really like the F Type gear selector too. It a great fun car to drive :-)

    Petrol and diesel are around $2.00 here which is about 1 pound there, diesel is still the frugal choice.

  • @markgeller5900
    @markgeller5900 6 років тому +1

    Great review as usual. Thank you for sitting in the rear seats. While you mention you are a "really tall guy", can you tell us how tall? The rear seat doesn't look like a place anyone would really want to be, except for a short 'tight' city ride. Long distance rides appear to be out, except for the little ones, but I suspect this Jag is meant to compete in the 'luxe city car suv segment" anyway. Us big guys (I am ^six foot one) always have to go up a segment, if we want our passengers to actually be comfortable, or if we ever have to sit in the back for a 2 hour drive. Thanks.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 років тому

      Hi Mark. I'm 6'3" and have a 35" inside leg. I wouldn't want to sit for too long in the back but a shorter adult or child would be just fine.

    Yes a very true review of the two models, high spec petrol would be my choice. One thing you did not mention was the all round viewing position from the drivers seat, when reversing take care, as the rear views are blocked by the head rest and the general line of the car. nice line from the outside, but be mindfull.

    Heavier doesn not mean lower CG ! CG is independent of mass amount! It is the location of that mass that matters (basic see-saw physics). 2 tonnes is just like Outlandish PHIB (28mpg IMP real world v 148mpg claimed NEDC). "Both of these cars are very dirty" ! Yup: Jack up a "normal car" into the airflow to increase drag. Add, massive wheels to increase unsprung weight and roadside particulates (2/3rds from tyre contact with the road, 1/3td from exhaust). All part of our #supersizemeSUVwastefulconsumerculture ! Fight #vehicleobesity #addlightness #improve aero Better off with a estate car if you want a load lugger or trailer capable machine.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the detailed response. I am aware of what CG is and it is JLR that describe the extra mass in this car gives it a lower CG, I appreciate it also comes with drawbacks and it mention those ;-)

    Interesting review and comparison, thanks. To say the fact it’s made of steel lowers the centre of gravity is factually wrong. If the steel was concentrated in the the lower parts of the car then that statement holds some truth but you stated the car is made of steel. Mass is always the enemy of all moving vehicles. It doesn’t matter where the C of G is when the things weighs as much as a traction engine, it just ruins all dynamic ability. Panel fit and alignment looked inconsistent. petrol version did indeed sound sweet.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 років тому

      Hi Mark. I described it that way as that is how Jaguar do. You are of course correct about the concentration of the mass. For example if you look at Tesla, the low down placement of the batteries aids cornering. Clearly, this car would be better if it was made of aluminium as that would reduce overall weight which would be a good thing.

    • @Mark13091961
      @Mark13091961 6 років тому

      Petrol Ped ok fair play you quoting jlr but we both know that’s just marketing bullshit.. mass is always the enemy to agility. Do you want a 2000kgs aluminium motor through the twisties or a 3000kgs electro barge??

      @PetrolPed  6 років тому

      I didn't know that. Maybe that is the reason, but other manufacturers support it and 90%+ of the people who buy a JLR car will have an iPhone or Android device so I just don't get it !

      They may well be building them at Halewood on the same platform as the Evoque and Discovery Sport.
      If it is to save money, then they are not passing it on to customers with their rather optimistic pricing. I mean, compare the price to the rather bigger Volvo XC60 and the upcoming variants of that, which is F-Pace competition, and on the other hand with volume selling established SUV's that are perfectly nice but with fewer engines that are less powerful but perfectly adequate, like the Nissan Qashqai at around half the price for a similar equipment level.

      Fair point Peter but I wonder how that saving compares with higher running costs due to increased weight
      i.e emissions=higher road tax=higher MPG plus blunted performance ?

      Firstly, thanks for the comment and I would hope to think I am a nice guy ;-)
      I would like to think I strike a good balance. Overall this car is very good so I wasn't lying when I said it was had to find fault. I did criticise the MMI for not supporting Apple Car Play and also was clearly not a fan of the lower spec and diesel engine. I am still establishing my channel and it is a difficult balance. A Jeremy Clarkson or Chris Harris can destroy a car, that is not so easy for me ! I also tend to review cars that I am likely to like. Anyway, I hope that helps. Maybe I could have talked about the pricing more as the E Pace can get pretty expensive as you go up the options list !

    Petrol worse than diesels overall. Higher CO2, CHs, CO, acrid Ammonia / NH3, 10 times more Particulates even under Euro 6 rules (no PM traps on most new petrols). Higher NOx than the diesel after 50,000 miles due higher wear rate of pertol engines. Simple solutions: Run all diesels on #hvo made from waste (not food) for higher MPG, lower PM, NOx. Use electric preheating to avoid 70& of start up/ warm up emissions #defa

      Euro 6 are much cleaner than the old ones, but they still aren't as clean as modern petrol engines. Petrol engines also don't kick out the carcinogenic particles which diesels do (that also linger at ground level), which is why we are seeing diesel bans in some city centers.
      Carbon buildup is generally much worse in diesel engines as well, due to the diesel itself. Good petrol engines don't suffer with it so much. That is what hurts emissions, mpg and reliability as they age. It's not uncommon to start having issues with things like the turbo and injectors on high mileage diesel cars (including catastrophic failure), caused by the buildup.

    • @TekAutomatica
      @TekAutomatica 6 років тому

      I'm an Idiot sadly not true, petrol engines emit more carcinogenic fumes and ultra fine PM2.5. Which goes deeper into the lungs than even PM10. USA has filtration over petrol pumps to help reduce benzene intake whilst refueling. www.ft.com/content/60b7cc8c-56b2-11e3-ab12-00144feabdc0

    In the Netherlands, the price of this Jaguar (the Diesel) is 80,000 Euro (including 16,500 Euro CO2-tax). That brings it right into the space of the Porsche Macan..... Guess what I will be choosing !!
    The Jag is simply too heavy, too old fashioned in Engine design. With the 1900 Kilo weight, the road taxes are 190 Euro per MONTH !!! No, this will not be a runner in the Netherlands, there are many others with better specs, better performance and substantially less costs (Alfa Romeo Stelvio, BMW X3, X4, Merc GLC, Porsche Macan and last but not least Audi)

    IMHO, this car has poor interior design, materials and refinement (considering the price, of course). Performances also are way under what one would expect from a Jaguar and from such a compact car (to be honest, there's not a single car in this segment that overcomes the competitors, they are all nothing special). I think that one who wishes to have a real "premium" SUV should look at D segment. Jaguar F Pace, considering obvious differences in price and size, is a lot better. But Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Porsche Macan and also Audi Q5 and brand new BMW X3 are better than F Pace. In C segment, probably the best ones are VW Tiguan and Toyota Rav4 (Hybrid).

    It absolutely amazes me that the head designer and all the top jaguar people that sign these designs off could not see that the front of the car is just so bland and Suzuki swift boring that they could let this design be on the front of an expensive Jaguar , they say it is a similar design to the F type and that cars front is a mess as well , but the backs are full on original Jaguar and stylish , Ford is another company that comes out with fuggly cars that everybody that sees them just go what were they thinking , don't these design dudes ask other peoples opinion .

    • @bruceburns1672
      @bruceburns1672 6 років тому

      Yes the back is outstanding , but why the lack of effort to the front , now if you take the upcoming Jag I Pace that is one outstanding beautifully designed original car , stunning all over and if the global financial crisis had not damaged my retirement fund so much that would be my final car , another example of complete top management failure to produce the goods at a critical moment in time for a company that has made so many bad decisions and that is Ford with the Lincoln Continental , all the ford management had to do was line the continental up with all the cars it had to compete with and ask themselves does this stand out enough to attract buyers , the Continental looks like a Toyota Camry from 10 years ago and naturally it has failed as a top of the range Ford product , blind Freddy could of told them that , what do they pay these top guys 12 million dollars a year for when all they have to do is ask 100 fans of the brand what do you think of this design while it is only in the design stage , another classic balls up would not using the Ford Evos concept design on the latest Mustang , the Mustang cant forever use a design from the 1960's , but that is Ford for you , who would be dumb enough to sell Jag and Land Rover for peanuts .

  • @bruceburns1672
    @bruceburns1672 6 років тому +1

    Technically this car is such a disappointment. Comparing the 180 hp diesel with the 20d 190 hp BMW X1 it is at least 150 kg heavier. It impacts the performance: much slower 0-62 (X1: 7.8 sec, e-pace: 9.3 sec) and top speed (X1: 219, e-pace: 205), co2 emissions (X1: 123-127, e-pace: 147) and corresponding fuel consumption (X1 mixed: 4.7 - 4.8, e-pace: 5.6). The e-pace figures are not worthy of a modern car!! It is also ridiculously wide (nearly 2m without mirrors!). It's styling is nice but other than that a real letdown......
    Even the new Volvo XC40 does a lot better........
