@veg2489 Because self-harming can be a result of a lot of different things. Trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, the list goes on. So to single out one condition based on only that is a big leap and unrealistic. It could just as easily be a result of something else.
There was another episode where a woman kept her sons inside most of the time, and homeschooled them after their father was killed. It’s not a reach - it’s a fairly common first conclusion - you’re absolutely right in suggesting there are a bunch of other mental health conditions that can contribute to self harm. However the one thing they tend to share in common is borderline organisation of the personality…. Some may not reach the threshold for a personality disorder, those who self harm tend to display a higher than average number of traits that are associated with borderline personality organisation and accompanying brain structures.

Idk if the show indicated any specific predisposition- but there are genetic factors that play into whether or not someone becomes an addict, just like there are predisposing factors to depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, or physical ailments like dementia, diabetes, or cancer. However, I feel like the court of law has more or less significantly established that just because a person is an addict- and therefore may have severely impaired impulse control, does not excuse them from being held responsible for actions they take. After all, we prosecute and jail alcoholics and drug addicts who drive over the limit all the time. Should treatment be the first line of defense? In my opinion, yes- but only in cases where no other person was harmed. If a person’s addiction has become so out of control that they are hurting others to feed it, then they are a danger to society and should be removed from said society for however long the law deems necessary. After that, they should be mandated to treatment. In my opinion.
Her husband sucks. Can we ever focus on the victim, y’all worried about the wrong diagnosis or the actress. This is why nobody comes forward. Irritating as hell.
