Garage thing isn't confusing for us, coz the sentence will speak for its self like "I'm running out of petrol, I should go to the garage" if you ask which garage😂 you need prayers or "Take the keys and put the car in the garage" if you take a car to a petrol station you need salvation😂😂...so you don't necessarily need to specify "Home garage"
I'm originally from Nigeria and I studied in the US for a year, I was surprised at how Americans had completely different words for several items. America's trunk is our own boot, America's muffler is our own silencer, America's fit-flops are our own slippers, and the list goes on and on.
I love how Ziya kept insisting the SA pronunciation of Nike was the correct one, even though it is an American company, and the company should be the one to decide how its name ought to be said. That is just adorable......lol! BTW, Ziya has the cutest smile.
Am from Namibia 🇳🇦 I can relate to everything team South Africa, literally we very close neighboring countries who share a lot. We also call barbecue, braai, tragic lights are robots/robot lights, gas stations are called service stations here
Good one, South Africa all the way. I didn't know that "ketchup" is tomato sauce... And Ziya, we lost one when you said we put "sausage" on the braai stand instead of "wors" 😂😂😂😂!!! It took me a long time to realise that sausage is wors
South Africa English is mainly Queens English 😂hence no Y in Nike Sometimes with all different cultures in South we tend to mix up English, Zulu and Afrikaans, lol some times depend s on the person. You are a lovely couple!❤️🙏
South Africans like to say "sho" in stead of " sure" and at the end of a call or even a conversation we like to say "sharp" and we call dried meat Biltong ... I'm not sure what Americans call it... I think they call it " jerky", unless I'm mistaken😊🌼
Greetings Christian and Ziyla, this was a good topic. I think most of South Africa words are Great Britain words or phrases, wouldn’t you say? I enjoyed this👍🏽. Have a great day 😘💐
Southern African whites are a mix of English ,Irish, Dutch, German and French huguenots manly but we have strong Portuguese ties as well . So many of our words have these influences.
Honestly the South African language is mostly influenced by afrikans not British English. Most of the words like tekkies are afrikans not British English.
Pop if you live in the midwest. 😜 My brother moved to Florida from Chicago about 15 years ago and I knew he was now a Floridian when he stopped saying pop.
We use to have Full Service Gas Stations back in the 70s. It was more expensive so people started just self serving in the 80s. Also there was a line at the full serve because they took longer.
@Mpho Mayekiso yep the use of words and pronunciation is similar i believe. It's funny when a word is pronunced in a different way, it often leads to confusion 😅
@Mpho Mayekiso Or when a different word is used we sometimes don't know what people are conveying as we are not familiar with that word. But, I love language, colloquialisms and different cultures, it makes life interesting. We can all learn so much if we want to.
I am from Nigeria...so I can relate qt a lot of the things Ziya was saying...but the "jersey/sweater "...i cant...lol in Nigeria we call them sweater or cardigan.... i just love u guys too much
I wish the expressions were written out. As an American, I'm having difficulty making out what is being said in South African expressions. You prompted me to google the origin and pronunciation of the name Nike!!
Lol.. on that note about the jerseys.. we do actually call the sport wear jerseys. Ijezi lePirate or ijezi leKeizer. I don't know where it came from but its been called like that ever since. In soccer, rugby and any other sports.. 😂
@christian, I have a response for the last part of the video, the greeting. as South Africans we have to greet, it's common decency, when people ask how are you they don't really want to know, so if you really wanna know ask a follow up question: "no really, how are you? ", then you can hear something different and the reason behind it, besides that we only reply coz we have to 😂😂😂
I am South African living in Canada for many years, and I still call it waTer. I can't seem to say it the North American way of making it sound like waDer with the hard "D"
S. Africa uses British English. So much of what you have presented as a difference between American English and S. African English is really American vs British English. I am an American retired to S. Africa. I also lived in the UK for a while. I heard the relationship very early on and adapted with no problem. BTW: Gas is what you produce. Braai vs BBQ: If you BBQ here, it is sometimes called Weberized or Weber. The processes are totally different.
New to your channel. Came upon by scrolling through UA-cam. I've traveled a bit and I know we use different words for thing. I think the US is the only one who says trunk. I've been to India, London, The Philippines and Honduras and they all say boot. BTW, they call soda in the south Coke. When I visited my grandmother in MS, she sent me the store for an Orange Coke. I thought she was crazy but I came back with an Orange Crush and that was what she wanted. 😅😅
I can't stop staring at Ziya she's soooo beautiful. O montle iyoh!! Lovely couple indeed!🇿🇦🇿🇦

Let's be honest, if someone asks which garage then the answer will be "the engen down the road by shoprite" ect
Yes brother

We love you somuch more Tebo😘😘😘.
Ziya - I'm trying to place your accent. Where did you grow up in South Africa?
My cousins who grew up in Capetown have a similar accent to her.. Dont know where she grew up though but I'm guessing Western Cape.
@@simadlunn4295 I find her accent not typically South African, hence my interest in where she grew up or went to school.
Gas station is interchanged between (Garage/Filling station/Petrol station) but in all honesty the most commonly used ine is "Garage"
So most of the words you use in SA are the same in the UK. It is "mince".
I was thinking that was what I was hearing. I thought they said "Minced"
Love u guys❤️
We see you Pumelela and guess what ? We love you too 😊😘
Ziya short For Ziyanda 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗neeeeeeh!!!!!!!
You got that right 😂
They are so cute together 🥰
Soccer jerseys in SA is a Kit or ikiti
For Zambia we interchange, we can call it jersey or sweater.
If it was possible I'd subscribe 10000 times
Aaah marn 🥺.that’s really so nice of you thank you so much ♥️
