  • I'm constantly amazed with the Qtile window manager and some its built-in functionality. In this video, I'm going to discuss a couple of interesting features that many Qtile users are probably unaware of...

    Im using qtile for 2 years supplemented with small amount of my code (tough with any update), but that layout was mysterious. Thank you for explanations. It is wasting desktop space, but has some advantages. I will try.

    Thank you DT. Always enjoy your videos and sure learn a lot from them. Thanks to your videos I was able to jump from Debian with XFCE to Arch with Qtile. From Leafpad to Vim. I'd like to share a quote i came across: Arch + Qtile + Kitty = Perfection... LOL

      To be honest I don't consider Debian plus XFCE to be a bad setup. Debian is supposed to be stable and reliable, and XFCE is a lightweight yet customizable UI. Only thing it's really missing is the vsync issues and wayland support. I used to use XFCE + Compiz, and you could probably do something with Wayfire that's similar.

    Qtile is so easy to hack as well... Making custom functions with qtile is very flexible and powerful

    Thanks for video :) At first I created dmenu for window list, later for mocp and when I saw the pattern I wrote this extension part :) I realy happy to see that in someones video as a cool stuff. This dmenu extension I use a lot: clipmenu, passmenu, session menu, udiskie-dmenu, networkmanager_dmenu - all these can be run through this extension as qtile part. For dmenu I use dmenu2 in arch as it has -h option and I can make it same height as top bar with same colors.
    Second thing - why you use columns and stack layouts? For me they looks same. If you don't want to have many windows in one stack (that's mostly happens rarely) just hit `EzKey("M-S-", lazy.layout.toggle_split())` for column layout. At the beginning stack layout was default (max and stack), but later moved to columns.

    • @DistroTube
      @DistroTube  Рік тому +5

      Window managers don't "connect" you to wifi. Window managers just manage windows. To enable NetworkManager....open a terminal and type:
      sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager --now

    • @imasciencegeek
      @imasciencegeek Рік тому +2

      Qtile is independent from distros, it's a small application that mostly just handles window placement.

    the main thing that would turn me off from qtile is that it's written in python which is kinda slow

    • @007JayP007
      @007JayP007 Рік тому +8

      While Qtole is configured in Python, most of the critical business logic is handled in C or is simply a API call to the xserver/Wayland. In terms of speed, Qtile is definitly on the same level as i3.

    • @umka7536
      @umka7536 Рік тому +3

      Which is kinda not. I tried Qtile vs i3 vs Xmonad. I did not see any difference.

      Windows management is one of the areas Python shines. Python is best as a job manager. Python itself is slow but in job management you are usually calling APIs and launching other programs. Where Python is slow in such an interface issue is either not relevant or a possible advantage.

    • @Axify
      @Axify Рік тому +3

      my man, were not sending rockets to space, python is only "slow" relative to other languages, it is completely fine for a wm

    • @sub-harmonik
      @sub-harmonik Рік тому

      @@Axify yeah that's what ppl said about javascript and now when people continue adding 'features' to webpages to basically turn them into full-blown apps they become super slow, unresponsive, and memory intensive.
      You don't have to send rockets to space for efficiency to be a factor in user experience.
      Maybe I will concede if it's just checking variables and making calls to X11 it doesn't matter too much, but at the same time I can see those hooks adding up. Also python isn't even the most efficient scripting language. Something like c with lua configuration makes way more sense imo.
