I assume that dying whilst clearing the condition has stopped the initialization of the message box, thus the placeholder, color and Mii image don't get replaced on the same frame, due to the death game state having interrupted initialization. Ofc I didn't program this game but me being a hobby programmer myself can come up with such a speculation.
At 2:24, I found another way to do it weeks ago: die, then activate the message right as the screen transitions to whatever is next (ex. in multiplayer). The timing is extremely hard to do, but it's possible.

For the power up and pow block glitch I’m guessing that what happens is the top part of Mario is stuck in the holding frame but the bottom half will stay loaded in, besides all that this video was awesome
I actually did that, what happens is that you'll see Mario fall down out of the sky in the main world, and the higher the checkpoint was placed the longer it'll take him to fall.
