I enjoy all the video's! Salvage idea's: Wooden lantern, chair bench, growth chart, scrabble letters for wall and shutters with the cool decoration in the top like the half moon or tree
I use salvage and pallet wood to plank tops of things. I picked up a freebie small cabinet yesterday that has louvered doors and a laminate top. I will paint the cabinet light gray, plank the top and paint it dark gray and I am adding caster wheels, as that is a "thing" down here. Sometimes when i trash pick at the Habitat store, I will get bun feet or cabinet hardware, if the piece is to far gone.
love it!! Love when ya'll show us how to build something! How about how to fix shelves in a tv cabinet, list of tools everyone should have on hand to get various jobs done....Im building my own inventory! thanks!!
Zeb’s dad has a sawmill and cuts thick boards for us. You can get full dimension lumber from specialty wood suppliers. Here in Utah we like National Wood Products. I think they are a nationwide company.
Jami Ray Vintage oooo Utah! I wondered where you were...maybe we can find some here...Tennessee has tons of wood...maybe a local farmer can help me out! Thanks!
Could you use a latex or acrylic paint over the shellac, and get the “crackle” affect? Or does it typically work better with milk paint? Tbh I’ve never used milk paint before.
Jami Ray Vintage Hmmm. Maybe sometime I’ll give it a test, on a piece of scrap wood, and see what it does. Otherwise, I’d do it your way. The tray is adorable, and I love the crackling and distressed look you made!
It’s 8/4 thickness in lumber terms. You can get it at specialty wood suppliers. It’s 2 nominal inches. The wood at Most hardware stores is planed down to 1-1/2 inches. See if you have a National Wood Supply in your area. That’s where I get wood for my thick table tops. -Zeb
We waited until it was tacky (it doesn’t smudge but you can leave fingerprints in it) You can wait until it’s completely dry but I feel like I get more crackling in the milk paint if I paint while the shellac is not quite dry.
Sorry Jami... I see where you said it was still a bit tacky when you painted it. Missed that the first time. Sorry.. I'm sure you just LOVE repeating yourself lol
Also, just a sidenote. I'm sure you probably already know this because you're "in the loop", but... there is this whole huge market for farmhouse cutting boards. People are looking for them like crazy and there just isn't enough of them out there. Cutting boards, yes. Farmhouse cutting boards, no. Zeb is pretty talented in the cutting-things-out-perfectly department so .. MONEY. Just a thought for you guys.
Love it💗 I'm just curious, can I apply more than one coat of milk paint (to get good coverage) to obtain a chippy distressed look. Or does the maximum chippy look appear with just one coat of paint. Thanks Jami and Zeb:) Ps. I'm not referring to a "crackle" look.
Yes, more coats will get more coverage but might also chip a little more than ours. If you don’t want chipping use extrabond with the milk paint and it’ll help it chip less.
If I made a long one I'd prob rout a channel in the middle with a rebate so I could fill it with stones at and place glass on top to be able to place things on
Both of you are naturals in front of the camera! Congradulation on another interesting DYI . Use your creative imagination with your found items. So far you are batting 100%. Ok, 99%... no one is perfect. Hope you secure a TV show in your future, or not. It all depends on what you're goals include. Have fun!
From google: volatile organic compound One of the most commonly used terms in the solvents industry is “VOC,” as in “reduced-VOC,” “non-VOC,” and “VOC content.” Basically harmful fumes.
Love it ,going back and watching old videos. Super cute idea 😊
❤️❤️

Great little display piece . Jami you should hire Zeb out for the day. I'm sure you'd have lots of takers : )
I guess I need to start searching for some little feet. I'm totally making 1000 of these!!!
Start chopping off all those bed posts! 😂

I love this tutorial guys, thanks so much, especially for the tip using shellac to make the milk paint crackle! Awesome, can wait to try!
Love this!! Turned out great! I made 6 of these last year, they are perfect for around the house.
Love that!! Make a noodle board for the top of stove. Trying to get the hubby to make me one.
Soooooo cooool!!! I will be definitely buying some of those feet! Thank you!
So cute!
Love this tray!
maybe make some head boards from salvage wood, frames, dog gates, dog beds etc
Loving it!
Love 💕
Yes please...☺️
adorable tray! love it.

Great video.
Turned out cool.
Thank you! Hope you feel better! 👊
i love that. want to make that.
I would like to see a two tiered shelf...1 1/2 ft by 2 ft or so!
I want to paint my daughter's bed and use your paint.how many cans do i need? Can you do a video how to paint a bed?
Love the tray🌸 Can you create a plate rack, I can't find one anywhere🙃Thanks
❤️❤️😘
If not using a dowel screw type of leg, how do you check for wobble? By checking the wood for bowing / warping? Thank you!
Yeah. If your board is warped going in it’s hard to fix it with feet unless you custom make them to accommodate for the warp.
Turned out really nice, that's a good idea to display cute stuff!!
Cute sandals Jaime!! And no I don't mean for you to display your sandals lol!!🤣
😂😂
I hope I didn't miss that part of the video. If I want to make the same item food safe, what kind of sealer should use?
The DIY wax we used is non toxic.
Love it. Where did you get the thick board? All our barn wood is much thinner.

I’ve never tried it with latex or acrylic so I couldn’t say.

Let me know how it goes if you try it.
I forgot to ask. For a beginner painter. What kind of compressor should I buy?
An 8 gallon compressor will run the HVLP sprayer that we use
How thick is the wood? Can you find that thickness at HD or Lowe’s, etc?

Could you do something as an old window upcycle, seriously we have about 60 and I am running out of ideas??!!??
Give me some please!
How long, after you apply the last shellac coat, do you wait before you apply the milk paint? Does the shellac have to completely dry first?
We waited until it was tacky (it doesn’t smudge but you can leave fingerprints in it)
You can wait until it’s completely dry but I feel like I get more crackling in the milk paint if I paint while the shellac is not quite dry.

Lol. It’s ok. Just wanted to make sure your project turns out right! 😊❤️

Might actually be a video in the near future. 👍

That would be cool! Now you’ve got me thinking about live edges and resin pours!
