@@MrTieDye thank you! I did do it with a king size flat bed sheet... so that was probably why. It's still beautiful! It won't let me share a picture sadly. I'm going to hang it in my high school classroom!
Here is a link to other ways I have played with the Star Flower design, with two of them being on a tee shirt, but also I show how to get a different number of petals or change the design a bit by where you do the airplane folds : ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuoSK9gu32oQbFGDzVMOvxhy.html
the main trick is just wrangling the fitted corners... I start out by tucking all four corners into one of the corner 'pockets' and then finish the airplane folds... it helps to have another person to help hold or stretch things out as you fold and smooth, but relly you just gotta go for it and get it to lay as flat as you can
soda ash is used with the fiber reactive Procion dyes ... it is what sets the colors so to get the bright colors you will need to find soda ash or the other name it goes by is Sodium carbonate ...... I know some people use pH-Up and some find the Washing Soda.... but it has to be the Sodium carbonate kind.... NOT the Sodium Bicarbonate ...... I know some people find it at pool supply stores ..... I am not sure how much of these other things you need, but the pH level you want for good dye reaction in 10.6-11.0 pH ... you can find test strips, but make sure they cover the range you are looking for
Another question....I've tried this pattern twice. Once on a tapestry and once on a t-shirt. The design is not as 'sharp' as I would like it to be. Is it better to do this on dry material? Or am I not getting my folds defined enough when I roll it up?
Yes, When I dye shirts, I almost always turn them inside out for a couple reasons ...... first of all, I can see the seams so I can flatten and center it easily. Second... sometimes there are tiny specs of dye that do not dissolve and they can leave tiny spots on the tee (happens with red, purple and browns a lot) so by turning tee inside out, most times the little spots are on the inside. and lastly, I use a pencil to draw some of my designs on and now and then the pencils marks do not always wash all the way out or get covered with dye... so these will be on the inside of the tee as well.
@@MrTieDye thanks for your response! I followed one of your vids this week and did it inside out like you and I think it's the best one I've ever done. Thank you for your content & lovely personality
@@lilyleja522 Yes, when I spin out in the washer, it is just spin.... if your washer sprays water during the first part of the cycle, you just need to set it towards the end of the spin cycle..... if it sprays water, it will dilute your soda ash and then the colors will not be as bright
Hi.. You r great person . I watching ur all videos. Can you tell me the name of the dye and how to prepare a dye. (what is the percentage caustic soda and hydro).
thank you... glad to be of help ..... I use fiber reactive Procion dyes and buy them from dharma, but there are many supplier of this type of dye ...... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html ...... here is a video on how I mix mine ....... ua-cam.com/video/3Fj289T6BVg/v-deo.html ....... and for the soda ash, I mix mine one cup to one gallon of water.... if you do not have any water issues, this should work for you .... it should have a pH of 10.6-11.0 to cause the proper reaction with the dye and the cotton ..... here is a video on how I mix my soda ash ...... ua-cam.com/video/zeI86jPen5U/v-deo.html
I do not know what part I folded wrong. I tied five of these 2 came out very good and 3 came out split in half at what step did I screw up? Help please.
ah yes.... you probably folded the airplane folds to the wrong corner, I have had a couple people show me similar images.... make sure the the point where you do the airplane folding to make a point is the center of the tapestry ... hope this make sense
most of them I buy here, and they come is several sizes ..... www.sunshinejoy.com/Tapestries-Hippie-Wall-Hangings/blank-white-tapestries-prepared-for-dyeing I also use flat sheets and buy those from Target, and I get plain fabric from dharma
color vibrancy depends on a several factors .... I use 100% cotton, I mix my soda ash 1 cup to 1 gallon of water, I use Procion fiber reactive dyes, I mix my dyes strong, I batch my items for at least 24 hours, but I like to go 48 hours if I have the time, in the winter time I batch in plastic tubs set next to heater vent and in the summer I put the plastic tubs in the sun to batch as the heat helps, if it is less than 65 degrees F then the dye cannot set up properly, then for washing, I rinse in the sink in cold water first to remove the soda ash and then I slowly turn water to warm and then hot as I remove the ties... then wash 3 times in hot water using syntrapol ..... hope this helps
I do not have a video on that part.... I do have a video for mixing soda ash .... ua-cam.com/video/zeI86jPen5U/v-deo.html .... I pre soak my items in soda ash for 20 minutes, and then I spin out the excess soda ash in the washer (make sure your washer does not spit water during spin cycle as this will dilute your soda ash) and then most designs I will fold them slightly damp and dye them...... afterwards I put them on a rack in a plastic tub with a lid and in the winder I will stack these next to the heater vent in the back room, in the spring and summer I put them on the shed roof in the sun...... I hope this answers your questions
MrTieDye if u set it for 20 mins and just squeeze out the excess soda ash mixture and the do the design partially damp will that work also don't have a washer that the spin water stops . Also another question after u dye it how long u leave it to set before rinse it out . Like 2 days or less?
Thanks for making all these videos, they're really helpful. I've seen this pattern before and I thought I knew how it was done but now I know I wasn't thinking about it right. Where do you buy your kite string and have you ever attempted the perfect spirals that takefumi and timofe do?
you are welcome... glad to be of help ..... I used to buy my kite string on Amazon, but they had a bad batch so I have switched to Embroidery String for now ...... Ace Hardware sells it, but I do not have a local one ...... and no I have not attempted that spiral yet, but I did order a blank tied spiral tee from Timofey on his Etsy page so I could study it a bit
I was going to ask you where you get your kite string. I also bought some from Amazon and it is awful. I have an Ace hardware a couple miles away. I'll have to check out if they carry it. Thank you!
The best kind of dyes, IMO, are Procion Fiber Reactive dyes ... I buy mine from dharma, they are in CA and I live in OR, so shipping is fast and decent price.... but I know other dyers buy from other places closer to them, here are the ones I have bought from ... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html Custom Colors in NC ....... www.customcoloursinc.com/ Grateful Dyes in CO ...... www.grateful-dyes.com/ and here is a link with many other places and other countries to buy dyes and other supplies ..... www.pburch.net/dyeing/dyesources.shtml
this one was done on a tapestry that was about 56 inches by 54 inches ... and I demonstrate how to fold it in the video , but I start with the airplane folds to get the long narrow triangle shape and then from the point, I twisted it up
Thank ou so much, this was one of my early video and had to be short ones, so I did them in parts, but this is one that I put the two parts together as soon as I could upload longer videos, so here is the all in one with folding and dyeing : ua-cam.com/video/OsvfjUosCNs/v-deo.html. .... have fun!!
yes, but the thicker the fabric, the more patience you will have to observe as the dye will take longer to soak in and to the other side ..... AND, these dyes only work on natural fibers
Soda ash is a powder that I mix with hot water and then I soak my tees in it... the soda ash raises the pH level of the cotton fibers in the tee shirt ..... this causes a chemical reaction between the dyes and the cotton fiber, making the dye bond with and become part of the fabric. ..... here are the dyes I use .... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html So when using Fiber Reactive Procion dyes, you need soda ash to make the dyes stick. here is a video on how I mix mine .... ua-cam.com/video/zeI86jPen5U/v-deo.html You can buy it from dharma, or at a pool supply place .... main thing is to get soda ash it is also called sodium carbonate ..... and be aware that it is not the same thing as sodium bicarbonate which is baking soda and not strong enough, BUT, you can heat baking soda and turn it into soda ash ...... www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml
It can also be found on Amazon, I buy about a pound at a time. Be careful, it is caustic, wear gloves and a mask. I also use soda ash on denim to make it look "washed" or older.

I put a link to the next video at the end of this one, ut here it is ...... ua-cam.com/video/M2fFEUQ06ho/v-deo.html ....... also, this is one that I went back later and put all of the parts together and up loaded it, here is a link to the all in one video as well ....... ua-cam.com/video/OsvfjUosCNs/v-deo.html
here is a link to some information on Dharma's website that covers the basics of what you need to do tie-dye ..... www.dharmatrading.com/home/information-you-can-use-from-dharma-trading-co.html .... I buy the Procion dyes and soda ash from here and I have videos on how I mix mine, but for now this will help you figure out what is needed

This looks amazing(watched 3rd vid)! I'm so gonna try on a fitted sheet and a shirt. For the fitted sheet should I told the rectangle(sheet, 1 layer) in half and proceed to make a paper airplane?
thank you and I would fold in quarters, tucking the corners into each other so that you have the center of the sheet and then do the airplane fold making the center of the sheet the point
Al principio, youtube solo me permitía subir videos cortos para que se dividieran en dos partes, pero luego los puse juntos, así que aquí está la versión completa de este diseño: ua-cam.com/video/OsvfjUosCNs/v-deo.html
I will add it to my list .... the symbol I saw had colored circles, with 4 black lines and then NA letters in the center ..... I think I can fold the whole thing except the letters.... they will be 'painted on with thick dye after it is washed from the first dye session the other way this design can be done is by stitching it... and i do have a couple stitching videos to show the technique
in the early days of doing videos I could only up load short videos, so I did them in parts, I tried to put a link to the next part at the end of the video, but I may have forgotten on this one, but later on, I did put the two parts together to make this All in one video .... ua-cam.com/video/OsvfjUosCNs/v-deo.html

Is there any trick to doing this on a fitted sheet instead of a tapestry?
the main trick is just wrangling the fitted corners... I start out by tucking all four corners into one of the corner 'pockets' and then finish the airplane folds... it helps to have another person to help hold or stretch things out as you fold and smooth, but relly you just gotta go for it and get it to lay as flat as you can
I haven't any soda so what can I use for long lasting colour
soda ash is used with the fiber reactive Procion dyes ... it is what sets the colors so to get the bright colors you will need to find soda ash or the other name it goes by is Sodium carbonate ......
I think dry is better when doing a design with multiple layers ..... is there a place i can see your results as that may help me see what is going on
I found your page on fb. I will send in a message
Did u do the t shirt inside out? If so, why? Awesome vid btw
@@MrTieDye also, do u soak in the soda ash and then just put it on spin cycle? Meaning no more water just soak and spin?
@@lilyleja522 that is wonderful, you are welcome, I am glad to be of help
How many yards of fabric u use to do this star
Anastasia Douglas .... This one is 54 x 58 inches.... But you can do it on just about any size
Thanks
I do not know what part I folded wrong. I tied five of these 2 came out very good and 3 came out split in half at what step did I screw up?
Help please.
ah yes.... you probably folded the airplane folds to the wrong corner, I have had a couple people show me similar images.... make sure the the point where you do the airplane folding to make a point is the center of the tapestry ... hope this make sense
Would you mind sharing where you get your tapestry? I'm wanting to try making blankets with my cousins, as they will last longer than just a tshirt.
most of them I buy here, and they come is several sizes ..... www.sunshinejoy.com/Tapestries-Hippie-Wall-Hangings/blank-white-tapestries-prepared-for-dyeing
I also use flat sheets and buy those from Target, and I get plain fabric from dharma
Also how do u keep the colors nice n vibrant after in terms of washing
color vibrancy depends on a several factors ....
MrTieDye ok think I understand syntrapol is the clear liquid soap?
MrTieDye Do u have a tutorial on how u batch set your items the process to prepare the fabrics to be dyed thank you
I do not have a video on that part....
Thank you!
where's the best spot to buy bulk dye?
The best kind of dyes, IMO, are Procion Fiber Reactive dyes ...
I buy mine from dharma, they are in CA and I live in OR, so shipping is fast and decent price.... but I know other dyers buy from other places closer to them, here are the ones I have bought from ...

Is there a tutorial on the tetrahedron fold?
coming soon
how many yards are you using and how did you fold it ?
this one was done on a tapestry that was about 56 inches by 54 inches ... and I demonstrate how to fold it in the video , but I start with the airplane folds to get the long narrow triangle shape and then from the point, I twisted it up
🔥🔥🔥
thank you
Wow.i like your work. Big no.please show me how to dye love Patten
Thank ou so much, this was one of my early video and had to be short ones, so I did them in parts, but this is one that I put the two parts together as soon as I could upload longer videos, so here is the all in one with folding and dyeing : ua-cam.com/video/OsvfjUosCNs/v-deo.html. .... have fun!!
👌
thank you
my question is that can it work on every type of material
yes, but the thicker the fabric, the more patience you will have to observe as the dye will take longer to soak in and to the other side ..... AND, these dyes only work on natural fibers
What kind of dye do you use?
I use Procion dye from dharma
Do you know how to write name time you dye any clothes
I do not understand your question
Are u using procion dyes ?
yes, I buy mine from dharma
I've been watching videos by many people on tie dying, and I keep hearing soda ash, but no one explains what it is. What is it, and why?
Soda ash is a powder that I mix with hot water and then I soak my tees in it... the soda ash raises the pH level of the cotton fibers in the tee shirt ..... this causes a chemical reaction between the dyes and the cotton fiber, making the dye bond with and become part of the fabric. ..... here are the dyes I use .... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html
So when using Fiber Reactive Procion dyes, you need soda ash to make the dyes stick. here is a video on how I mix mine .... ua-cam.com/video/zeI86jPen5U/v-deo.html
You can buy it from dharma, or at a pool supply place .... main thing is to get soda ash it is also called sodium carbonate ..... and be aware that it is not the same thing as sodium bicarbonate which is baking soda and not strong enough, BUT, you can heat baking soda and turn it into soda ash ...... www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml
It can also be found on Amazon, I buy about a pound at a time. Be careful, it is caustic, wear gloves and a mask. I also use soda ash on denim to make it look "washed" or older.
Cool😍
thank you
How can I do this design on a t-shirt
I will do a video on a tee shirt soon for the Star Flower

This looks amazing(watched 3rd vid)! I'm so gonna try on a fitted sheet and a shirt. For the fitted sheet should I told the rectangle(sheet, 1 layer) in half and proceed to make a paper airplane?
thank you and I would fold in quarters, tucking the corners into each other so that you have the center of the sheet and then do the airplane fold making the center of the sheet the point

Darlin, did you say, "soda ash"??? If so, wth Is that?

No mostraste el final

Can you tye dye a Narcotics Anonymous symbol for me.
are you wanting to order one?? or did you want a video for how to make one??
I would like a video please
I will add it to my list .... the symbol I saw had colored circles, with 4 black lines and then NA letters in the center ..... I think I can fold the whole thing except the letters.... they will be 'painted on with thick dye after it is washed from the first dye session
the other way this design can be done is by stitching it... and i do have a couple stitching videos to show the technique
I just need the symbol a circle with a square in it. Thank you.
@@danivarnado2142 okay great... yes I can do that folded and will get to it soon
