  • I'm making a medieval Burgundian gown, and I'm here to tell you more than you EVER WANTED TO KNOW about them.
00:00 Introducing a new little project
    01:06 Historical Context
    03:15 Valois-Burgundy
    05:27 What's a Burgundian Gown?
    07:49 An English Burgundian
    09:15 My plan and "pattern"
The Burgundian Gown was a style of dress worn by the wealthy in the 15th century in Europe. It's the kind of dress that goes with the classic pointy princess hat, or hennin.
Today is only the theoretical background, and it's a straight LECTURE, complete with really awkward technical difficulties. Do smash the like button if you learn a thing though, and if pure unadulterated facts aren't quite your cup of tea, please have a look at my other videos where I try to be a touch more entertaining.

I'm a senior in highschool with a fascination for history, specifically the medieval period, and your channel is becoming one of my favorites. Thank you for being so informative, yet also easy to understand! This is so much better than reading a textbook.

    Loving your videos.
I’ve officially completed a couple of historical gowns made from bed sheets …
Now that I’ve gotten much more confident in my sewing skills I’m trying to decide on what to make with the 8 yards of beautiful dark green cotton velvet I’ve been gifted… i can’t decide what I want to make!
I wonder if I should make a Burgundian gown with the fabric- seems like it might be a good staple to have in a historical wardrobe… 🤔
On to video 2 for now

Your paper demonstration of the gown's construction was really useful! I've read that theory before but didn't quite get it, now I see how it explains the image in portraiture really well.

When do we see you cutting out your burgundian dress? I have been trying to design one but making a mess and wasting a lot if mock up fabric

The dress is done and I'm slowly working on the video! But it probably won't be out for a month or so (I work slow haha). I'd recommend pleats though! Embracing pleats can make the pattern way more forgiving and they look great. Check out the Stitch In Time episode on the Arnolfini dress if you haven't seen it. Good luck!

Wine is never a bad joke.
    Maybe if it’s lousy wine…
