Takes skeptical chess-ism to appreciate skeptical theism.
During the World Chess Championship 2018, in Game 6, challenger Caruana had a forced mate in about 30 moves against champion Carlsen according to the chess computer. However, no grandmaster knew that there was a forced mate prior to looking at the computers. And they had a difficult time explaining the position to Caruana and Carlsen. "I am not going to disagree with the computers, I just don't understand it," Carlsen said in the press conference after that game after being informed about what the computer said.
But just because the best chess players don't understand the game of chess fully doesn't mean they don't understand the game at all. Similarly, skeptical theism doesn't need to undermine our moral intuitions. Beginner chess players can fully recognize and understand a checkmate in 1 move even if the best chess players cannot fully recognize and understand checkmates in 30+ moves. Likewise, a skeptical theist can fully recognize and understand that saving a drowning boy in a pool when fully capable is the right thing to do even though they cannot fully comprehend why that boy is allowed to drown in that pool if there were no humans nearby to save him.
