- What a rollercoaster of an offseason for Poli! He left, he came back, and now he leaves DLSU again. Sam and Gab hastily hop on the pod again to discuss this news and the immediate implications.
I just learned from another UAAP forum that Poli’s 3 units away from getting kicked out of LS. LS insiders can confirm. But if it’s true, then Poli made the right decision.

Poli's departure changes things. While Konov and the other young Forwards will be there to fill his slot, the versatility and "positionless" play of Poli won't be easily replaced by committee. This lack of frontcourt creation will be especially highlighted in the absence of an Evan Nelle-caliber playmaker.
That being said, I still think DLSU has the best frontcourt (though the gap between UP has lessened). They still have KQ and Mike Philipps leading a competent set of bigs in Agunanne, Cortez, Konov and Marasigan. No matter how much better UP's frontcourt might seem on paper, recent history has shown how DLSU's frontcourt regularly wreaks havoc against UP's bigs. Gonna be interesting to see how they match up in S87.

Agree with Gab. Not only did Poli leave, UP also got QMB. UP now has the frontline edge.
I forgot to mention in the pod, UP just went undefeated in their Euro training camp. This is really championship or bust for UP if you ask me - sam

Kidding aside, the one DLSU player who has to step up and be more consistent is CJ Austria. He can create his shot and is not afraid to be physical. He played as a wing in their last game vs. UP and he was the only one who played consistently throughout the game. He was actually plus 11 in his almost 18 minutes of play.
The loss of Policarpio definitely decreases the depth of their frontcourt. Topex likes to field KQ, Michael Philips, and Agunane together but then that would be difficult, because only Rayven Cortez and Konov are the comparative replacements (unless they go small). As I mentioned in my previous comments, it is DLSU's frontcourt vs. UP's backcourt. And now that La Salle advantage has diminished. This will definitely be UP's championship to lose.

Jonnel is a huge loss for DLSU It's a bittersweet feeling pero at the end of the day, he has a child to raise and a family to raise. Maybe test Konov as a 4 siguro but Poli's contribution is very irreplacable but now, we have to respect and wish Poli luck in the PBA, IMO he's a late pick in the 1st round to a early 2nd round pick.

Sa NCAA yata 1 year residency but you dont lose a playing year. Sa UAAP 1 year residency but you lose 1 playing year. I dont think the lose 2 playing years will happen. Sen Pia is a re-electionist, she will milk this case all the way to the SC...

Grabe crazy UAAP news this week (crazy basketball week in general)!! Don’t blame you for forgetting some of the players who left DLSU. Sa sobrang dami ng players there, it’s hard to keep track. Buensalida slightly surprising since the DLSU fans have been hyping him na he’ll step up. Aside from CSB, it’s good to consider din the other major teams like San Beda (lots of minutes got freed since umalis si Cortez) and Letran (rebuilding). As for Poli, super gulo niya hahaha sana sure final na itong PBA draft declaration. Maybe Poli wants to leave college na rin since he’s already a father, not just for the money pero also the vibe/atmosphere na gusto niya mas seryoso na? I don’t think Poli will go for a foreign contract since pamilyado na (almost all of the Pinoy ballers abroad do not have their own families pa).
Sam, I don’t think the players who are transferring now are afraid of the new residency rule proposal. Hindi naman kasi pwedeng retroactive application nun if ever man ma-approve (I have serious doubts since it’s a technical circumvention of an existing law and Sen. Pia already gave a warning). Most likely, the reason is just the existing rule na hindi bawas sa playing years ang redshirt year if UAAP to NCAA (unlike if UAAP-UAAP).
Also, I know this is mainly a UAAP/college ball podcast, but hope you could say something about the upcoming PBA draft. Crazy rin news doon right now (balikbayan Filipino ballers, Barefield, college stars who went straight there, etc). Also, in another podcast, sabi ni Nico Rocha baka raw makakita tayo ng hashtag about PBA teams tanking for QMB (he’s targeting PBA 2025 draft daw and matagal na Gilas target na din pala siya) 😂

@@bolerosph RJ did not perform as well as expected in Japan B. League (tho decent stats naman) and his team got demoted to B2. RJ was one of the players released by the team. Very different from his stint in Korea where he was the ROY. Notable rin sa cases ni RJ and Dave na may family roots sila in the PBA, so baka it was really their plan to come back after only a couple of years abroad. Not sure if something else is happening in Japan pero it’s not uncommon for Pinoy ballers to ride the bench there (which is weird kasi bakit pa sila magbabayad ng import kung ibabangko lang haha, parang sayang bayad unless mas mababa sweldo sa locals nila?).
Afaik the PBA has been officially paying top rookies more since the “Mikey Williams rule” (i.e., they can be officially given a max contract which is 420K/mo despite being rookies), tho obviously not as much as foreign leagues can offer. I also saw news na the import height limit is gonna be removed and baka magkaroon ng guest team sa PBA. Baka may better changes pa na susunod (sana they implement a good lottery system to reduce tanking). A lot of people enjoyed the latest finals series between SMB and Meralco, so hopefully umangat ang league considering how big basketball is in PH.
With the departure of Poli, I was actually considering Aaron Buensalida as his replacement. You nailed it; they should have utilized Aaron instead. Let's wait and see if we'll witness more changes on their pool before the UAAP starts.

While SJ’s transfer is not yet truly confirmed (UST’s team manager is not even aware), as an UST alumnus, I’m fine with his departure from the team. I lost faith in him after seeing him play this pre-season. No improvement whatsoever. He still seemed lost game after game. He’s turnover prone. I don’t know what happened to him. Was he demotivated? But from what I’ve heard, he was not doing well even during practices since last year thus, he can’t earn his minutes. Afaik, he’s a ball dominant player when he was in Arellano so maybe he’s struggling a lot taking this new role. He can’t be a go to guy anymore now that there are other better recruits joining the team. Anyway, good luck to SJ wherever he goes. Moving to an NCAA team is a better move, imho.
Yes, Coach Pido seems to have the same thoughts. He's never looked happy with SJ Moore. But still, i wish him the best
Really frustrated on Rubico not getting major minutes even in pre-season games. The kid was playing lights out when he was in the juniors (And this was amongst the likes of Pablo, Gagate, Moore, Gemao and others who were also streaking hot that season).
How would he even crack the guard rotation when Baclaan and Cortez will finish their redshirting? So much potential wasting away on the bench by not playing.

@gfbs7004 well I think there's nothing wrong with stepping up and I'm sure Konov will settle and adjust to the team's needs with time. Based from the limited footage we have, Konov's a shooter and if Abadam fills in the hole that policarpio left for slashing that would be great too.

Poli’s career has always been supported by Gov Delta Pineda of Pampanga, who’s the team manager of Converge in the PBA. I am inclined to think that Converge is planning to take Poli in the second or third round of the upcoming PBA draft after taking Balti as first overall of course.

What' s going on with La Salle is the over recruitment of highly touted players who seem to threaten to lessen the minutes of those who already have big roles and those who aspire to eventually be given due notice. We can't fault a person for trying to seek better opportunities. What matters I think, regardless of where their talents bring them and how long they stay, they give all that they could when they are needed.

Nah! Poli leaving has nothing to do with over recruitment as most of their top recruits won’t play this coming season. Poli is not theeatened to have less playing time. He said it himself that the reason is financial; he has a family to raise. He already had announced to leave months ago but was just persuaded to stay. He ended up leaving anyways.

I'll miss Poli but I fully support shorter college careers if you can secure bigger money, play in better competition. Kaya naman na niya mag pro, I think. Lengthy, skilled, yung pagka enforcer attitude niya will translate well sa PBA hahaha wag lang sana siya gawing Center.

Well I get the point with over recruiting, it has its pros and cons especially for the recruits. From a team and program like La Salle, its what they should be doing. You get talent and prevent talent from getting to other schools. And Poli’s sudden departure is the exact thing over recruiting hopes to address. It was just bad timing, because I doubt Gaspay moves or La Salle would have allowed him to move if they knew Poli would leave.
I get it but I'm still not a fan of it. IMO, it's a disservice to the student-athletes who decided to put their future in the team/program's hands. We expect loyalty from players to their schools but do not expect the same from schools to their players
@@bolerosph I for one, do not expect loyalty from the students as they are free to choose the school and path they want to go to. Ultimately, student athletes will go to a program they feel is best for them with the knowledge that schools will always seek more talent, in a growing competitive league.
If you asked me 10 years ago, I would have agreed with you. Overrecruitment was the practice that got La Salle in trouble in the late to early 2010s. Now, however, in this landscape where players, especially the good ones, have opportunities everywhere like the MPBL, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other schools with a decent budget, its important to have enough talent to make up for any sudden departures, like Poli’s and for Ateneo Amos’, and for UP the year before Tamayo’s.
Very valid points. As i said, i totally get why schools/teams do it. I came from a school that does it haha. Nakalaban ko sa intrams yung mga recruits that never made it 😂

We’ve actually said that lasalle are championship contenders the past two off seasons. You can check our pre-season videos for season 85 and 86. For season 85 Gab and Sam’s pick for champion was actually Lasalle. Lasalle just lost to UP twice during Filoil and now even lose Policarpio (which we believe is a key player) with Up gaining another front court player in QMB. That’s why we rank Lasalle currently (emphasis on current) at a lower tier than UP. But anything can happen come season 87. They still have the best FSA (Agunnane) Local player (KQ). Just my thoughts. -Maui
