  • Part 4: • Larry Holmes on Trevor...
Part 2: • Larry Holmes on Being ...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
    --------
Larry Holmes defeated Ken Norton for the heavyweight championship and defended his title seven times before facing Muhammad Ali. The former champ spoke on his title defenses, including the tough bout against Mike Weaver. Prior to the Ali fight, Holmes hadn't received the proper respect of a heavyweight champion due to the large shadow Ali cast over the division. Holmes admitted that he knew he was in a no-win situation against Ali because if he won, critics would shrug off the victory due to Ali's age.
Larry Holmes continued to speak on the bout against Muhammad Ali by explaining the circumstances surrounding the fight. While many believe Ali was dealing with Parkinson's Disease during that time, Holmes rejected that belief and claims Ali had his faculties during the fight. Holmes added that Ali didn't have Parkinson's until after their fight and claims he told Ali not to fight him but Ali wanted the money. According to the former champ, Ali was paid $10 million for the bout and he was paid $3 million even though he was the defending champion.
Larry Holmes described his 1980 victory over Muhammad Ali, which was the first time in Ali's career where he had a fight stopped. Holmes claimed Ali's trainer, Angelo Dundee, knew Ali had no chance against him because he knew all of Ali's habits after being his sparring partner. Holmes revealed that he wasn't hitting Ali with a closed fist for much of the fight despite attendees encouraging him to beat Ali up. The former heavyweight champ also described crying after the fight and going to Ali's dressing room to tell him he'd always be the greatest in his eyes.

Considering all heavyweights in boxing , I think Louis, Liston, Ali overall had the best jabs, not including Holmes. I agree, Holmes had the best jab in the history of heavyweight division. He used it so effectively especially along with his side to side movement.
Like Robinson at welterweight, when in his prime I think Holmes could have beaten close to 95% of boxers in his division in the late 1970s, early 1980s just by using his jab. If you want to box, look at Holmes vs Shavers 1, textbook demonstration of effectively using the jab and movement.

This fight has parallels to when Rocky Marciano retired the Brown Bomber Joe Louis. One difference was the fact that Holmes already held a title when he fought Ali whereas Marciano was still climbing the ranks towards a title shot.

I saw this fight live in 1980. It was unforgettable; the solemness of the crowd after the fight was chilling. It was the end of something, almost as if a bright light went out around the world. Ali was so much more than a boxer. He carried the ideals of young Americans who opposed the war, the blacks who were constantly and still are oppressed, and a sliver of hope for the marginalized people of the world. I heard he would often turn to the servers or house cleaners in the room and engage them while in the presence of celebrities. There will never be another Ali. I love Larry Holmes and I understand his bitterness being he was always in Ali's shadow, but saying Ali didn't have Parkinson's at the time of their fight is just delusional. You can watch Ali train for the fight and he literally couldn't even hit the speed bag. They loaded him with Thyroid medication which gave him good days and bad. When he came out to the ring they had to help him get through the ropes. And looking back now, health professionals say Ali had signs of Parkinson's as early as the mid 70s.

He might be able to pull off another miracle win. It soon became apparent that it wasn't going to happen. He just didn't have it anymore. nah i completely disagree. i read these sorts of comments before fully watching it but nah i disagree with all of this.
he didnt word himself well but he said "he was sick but he wasn't SICK", basically he was showing strong signs of parkinsons but at that time he wasnt 100% fully considered completely parkinsons, like taken over.
its a big stupid the way he worded it and the way it's been twisted. but hes saying, yeah he was sick but he wasn't SICK. he was still 100% there mentally, there wasn't any distractions or issues from that, the parkinsons was basically like the little root inside him at the time, it was 'there' but such a tiny tiny early amount that it didnt have THAT much of an impact.
which is the exact point he's making. he was sick enough to not have to fight that dumb fight, but not sick enough that he wasn't capable of making decisions or fighting properly, because he could.

Ali is the one who pushed for that fight. He was retired because he retired after the 2nd Spinks fight. He came out of retirement to fight Larry. Holmes did not want to fight him. During one of Holmes's Title Defenses before that, Ali was there Shadow boxing in the crowd between every round saying he wanted Larry or something to that effect. I happened to live through that time in boxing and do not need a slanted edited 30 for 30 and I love 30 for 30. Ali had no business being in the ring with Larry Holmes at that moment in time. Larry is not the bad guy whatsoever. Now Ali is a beloved figure so Larry still can't win. Larry Holmes was Heavyweight Champion From 1978 to 1985, for 7 Years and they had to rob him of his title at that so he did not equal Marciano's 49-0. He never ducked anyone that was out there that he had to defend his title against. Larry is the greatest Heavyweight Champion that I have seen in my time of watching boxing. The 2nd Frazier vs Ali fight is when I start picking up the Sport. Hopefully someday Larry will be recognized for how great of a Champion and how great of a Boxer that he trully was. • @jamesdesch3201
      @jamesdesch3201 3 роки тому

@El Grando Smokio Listen, Ali in my opinion is the GOAT for a host of reasons. The Ali from '64-'67 was literally untouchable. That Cleveland Williams fight was the finest display of boxing perfection, ever, in my view. That Ali would've destroyed Holmes. You're right, Holmes doesn't really admit the reality of the situation --Ali clearly suffering from Parkinson's. That fight was criminal. Holmes had nothing to do with that. He was in a no win situation. I can see where Holmes is coming from, and can't blame him for his mindset. He didn't get any credit then, and he still gets crap and little credit to this day. He just wants to be recognized as a great fighter to no avail. Therefore, he talks smack and comes across as a bit of an ogre. I believe Holmes was a great fighter, but not even close to Ali's level. In terms of the fight, he did show great compassion toward Ali. He could've done some serious damage to him, maybe even kill him. Ali's corner and the medical board that gave Ali the greenlight knew the deal, but moved forward anyway because of money. There were no adults in the room to save Ali from himself. Perhaps when Holmes hits 80 he'll admit that Ali was a shell of his former self, and very sick. I hope this clears up my position. Thank you for your interest.

I had a friend whose father had undiagnosed Parkinsons for years and he was slowly losing his ability to talk fluidly like he used to. Sometimes it sounded like he was drunk, but he used to be quick witted and energetic. It was actually sad to see him become a shell if his former self and this is what happened to Ali. He should've been diagnosed with Parkinson's years ago.

Ali's parkinsons was clearly set in by the time of that fight holmes just doesn't want to admit that it wasn't a true win against ali

Nobody was saying this when Ali beat Leon Spinks the fight before this one. Blame Ali's team or the delusional fans, before you blame Holmes.

He said that Ali didn't have Parkinsons then and moments later he said the fight was a cakewalk for him. A fine boxer no doubt but damn its killing him that people don't like him and its because of statements like that why they do not.
Edit: and at the end he said that he slap boxed him, so in conclusion then, Ali didn't have Parkinsons yet, he beat him with ease by slap boxing him. smfh Larry

Love Larry. He faced the toughest opponents there were at that time. Oliver McCall, Mercer, Ernie, Cobb, Bobick, Weaver, Witherspoon, Norton, Spinks, and Cooney. Just to name a few.
