  • That was the last normal day for Jo Ann Stach and her 5 children: 10 year old Darren; 5 year old Corrin; 4 year old Kayla; 3 year old Ryan; Tyler was 1. Jo Ann’s husband, Joe, was a New York City firefighter in the Bronx. She remembers him calling at 9:06 in the morning on 9/11 telling her he was on his way down to The World Trade Center, warning her to stay off the tv news. Jo Ann didn’t speak to Joe again for 48 hours. One of her most vivid memories was picking up two of her pre-schoolers that morning and making eye contact with another FDNY wife, who had kids the same age. The next time the women met, just days later, there was no eye contact. Jo Ann’s husband made it home after 9/11. The other FDNY wife was now a widow.
Jo Ann was on the phone all night September 11th, speaking with one FDNY wife after the other. She awakened in the morning with a bottle of wine in her hand, saying to herself, “And I don’t even drink!”
While Joe Stach made it home, he was never the same. First came the PTSD.The nightmares. The night Jo Ann awakened to find Joe downstairs. When he heard her he shouted out, “Stop!!! We found something. Don’t move”. They stood that way for 3-4 hours. Joe thought he was on the pile, looking for signs of life.
Then there were the strange emotional reactions to the smell of Vicks vaporub, which Jo Ann says was her go-to remedy for their 5 young children. For so long, Jo Ann didn’t realize that the smell put Joe in a tailspin because firefighters had put Vicks up their noses to mask the wrenching smell of the pile. The PTSD stopped only when Joe was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018. Jo Ann says, “It brought him back to us”. He was extremely humble and human. He was able to feel again, but for a very short time. 51 year old retired Lt. Joe Stach Jr. died of his 9/11 cancer just 8 months after his diagnosis

Shelli, I don't know how you elicited these accounts from 9/11 survivors and their families, but they are among the best I have ever seen. By 'best' I mean I was moved, informed, startled, learned something new... a whole host of things, and that was primarily because you never interrupt, even when the person paused, until there was what seemed to be a deeply 'natural' end of the account they wanted to give. Even then, your questions were always very limited and made absolute sense given their account. Thank you Jo Ann, [and everyone else who has taken part in this interview series] for telling us about just *some* of what happened to you/your family as a result of that day. I'm a Brit and the impact of 9/11 has torn parts of my family apart [conspiracy theorists among us both at the sibling level and nephews/nieces level]. As bad as it has ever got, I know it has always been unquantifiably worse for your husband, you, your children, and all the other survivors. I just want you to know, I will never, ever forget.

How devastating for the families. Until I started watching these stories, I didn’t realise the far reaching consequences of 911. The day was just the beginning. What a wonderful strong woman.

Yes every year when I look for articles and now videos about 9/11. I too knew but didn't know all at the same time. So generous of these people to share their stories. God bless

Thank you for sharing. I totally connected with your story. My husband survived Vietnam, but the result was the whole family suffering with his PTSD, Chronic depression, and ADD. Now i am a widow after 40 years of marriage. To me the term widow means someone loved me. They didn’t divorce me or run off. Had it not been for their unfortunate demise, they’d most likely still be with us.

My dad survived his tour in Vietnam, we were lucky but lots of different issues. No talking about it, just "press on". He died at 83 of lukemia which was rapid onset after denying exposure to Agent Orange from his records. It was disgusting.

My husband was a Vietnam veteran. He died at age 62 from cancer. He had been exposed to agent orange and other chemicals during his military days. We had been married for 31 years when I lost him

I love how she is unfiltered. I had an uncle that was murdered, an uncle that committed suicide and I nearly died with a freak infection while 9 months pregnant all in September. September is referred to black September in our family.

I was really struck by what she said about not remembering September 10th and only remembering everything that happened on and beyond September 11th.t

PTSD is such a tragedy for those who suffer from of it. You would think by now there would be therapies to help these people.

The stories of the kids of 9/11 would be something else to hear. Putting that day of hell into a kids perspective and how their lives have unfolded. Jo Ann is one tough cookie and I wish her and all of those left behind nothing but the best. I am praying for all of them.

Some of them have given interviews. There was a high school right across the street from the towers and some of them have talked about it.

I'm British. I always remember 9/11 and not just on the anniversary. She looks very pretty, especially as a "recently unsupervised woman". The hair and lipstick are very nice.

That’s the thing with PTSD. It never goes away and you’re not allowed to talk about it. Ever.

Kids are traumatized by parents traumas they go through it with you. My mother had alot of trauma even when i was in her it affected me when i was certain age again she would bring up her trauma events. I long for that life too before 9/11. I was so mad a-lot of the firefighters died . To deal with all this through the years so sad but glad the children did have him around. Vicks wow! So much more suffering learning from you all. I watch the anniversary days but this is more healing hearing what you all went through. It wasn’t one day event! Not talking about it was the worst . The people that went to therapy said they did better once they did this I hope helps you with sharing. I hope it helps others too. Looking at Pete Davidson shows alot. I thought kids were perhap getting lots of help . Obviously not the type needed for healing. Hopefully now i will listen to their stories too!

Shelli, I am blessed by your ability and wisdom. You allow these dear ones to tell their stories without interrupting and also only asking a few, timely questions that help bring their stories out in what seems to be their true meaning. I wish you could take over all news agencies . Best interviewer around!

No disrespect to this wonderful lady, but the in rest of the world, terrorism was our first thought. Bin Laden had publicly declared war on the USA. The WTC was bombed in 1993 by his cronies. In 1998-9 two Us embassies and the SS Cole were bombed, killing over 250 people and injuring four and a half thousand, mostly local passers-by and neighbors.
Somehow the US public was still kinda oblivious. They were always badly served by news organisations.
And Rep politicians ran then, and run today, on a ticket of pretending that the US can opt out of international involvement, and always reduce foreign alliances, diplomacy, relationships - and reducing the Intelligence and policing capability to keep abreast of things.

@Lorena Tapia I truly don’t mean to be disrespectful, but where was your “God” on 9/11 when those of us lost friends, family, etc. Those of us left with PTSD…I can’t bear to hear a plane overhead…and extreme noises make my heart pound in panic. I lost all my friends at Cantor Fitzgerald…not a single one survived. A former coworker and friend lost his twin Firefighter brother…no one could tell them apart. So many people I knew that lost someone dear to them. I can tell you’re a kind, compassionate and empathic person, but we needed blessings and protection from the terror, horror and loss of September 11, 2001 that changed our lives forever. I hope you and your loved ones stay safe during this terrible pandemic. Peace.
