    For people planing this now. I'd recommend to have at least x8 line width. The setup is severely bottlenecked. Technically it works but the GPU is wee bit wasted

    Great video Elliott, indeed very educational. I'm thinking on replicating your setup but in my case I will be using the GPU for number crunching. Now I have a question for you.
    I'm scratching my head trying to understand how did you connected the GPU to the R610. Is it a "PCI bridge to ISA card" (1:17) what you say?? Trying to look that up shows a lot of things, none of them the one you use.
    Could you list the components you used or, at least, this bridge? Thank you very much.

      Thanks! I used something like this to go from PCI 16x to 1x: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-PCI-E-1x-to-16x-Powered-USB-3-0-Extender-Riser-Adapter-Card-Bitcoin-Litecoin-/310897618647?hash=item4862f12ed7:g:e1IAAOxyUI1TIzwy
      I'm thinking that 1x PCI 2.0 may limit the bandwidth for your GPU. (I'm almost certain it limited my GPU gaming performance!) So there are more expensive ways to achieve better performance (I think). Check this out: www.onestopsystems.com/expansion-kits
      Something like the 8000 Expansion kit may offer better throughput. It depends on how much money you have to spend and whether you'll see much performance increase.
      Thanks for getting in contact, I hope this helps! :)

      Thank you very much for the speed and the links, Elliott. They are surely helpful.
      Since my budget is very limited (personal size budget, not corporate), so I'll go with your first choice to test the waters, while saving for the upgrade. Will test the bottleneck with the GPUs I have handy.
      I wish you a happy 2017!

      Hi Elliot,
      Since you asked, it is time for me to come back and share my experience.
      The Extender came right before my Christmas leave, so I tried it first on a computer at home. The card was a Nvida GT 440, nothing fancy. That was the second card on the system, the first a GT 730. After a week on, the numbers almost doubled those with only the GT 440 as the only card on the system.
      Once back I plugged the Extender with the 440 on the Poweredge R610 and provided some electrical juice... Not to see the improvement that I expected, at first. Maybe needs time, so i've given it a week also for the numbers to stabilise.
      Since I do not have a tool to measure the performance of the card I must rely on the performance of the BOINC platform which, in turn, rely on some other factors that sets the computer performance. That said, numbers do not match the expected outcome.
      This tells me that, maybe, it is not the Extender, or some component within, but some other thing what limits the performance of the card. My guess is that the limiting factor is the motherboard itself.
      I expected that since my card was way less demanding than yours, the impact of using the Extender would be none or very low. But seeing that the outcome is way less than that on the PC with the very same extender, the bottleneck must be somewhere else. Also the SO is Win10 Pro and no playing with the BIOS settings and same version for the drivers.
      Sorry for the long post. What are your thoughts Elliot?
      Thanks.

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  8 років тому

      Hi, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier.
      Thanks for getting back to me with your findings.
      Your results are very interesting. What are the specs of your PC and specs of the PowerEdge R610? I wouldn't have thought the performance would be limited by the CPU or RAM, but it depends on how the BOINC platform works maybe.
      Another factor could be the PCI speeds. Although your GPU isn't very demanding, I suppose x1 at PCI 2.0 is slower than x1 at PCI 3.0. (Half the bandwidth) This would have had an impact if your 'test' PC was running PCI 3.0.
      The GPU states it requires PCI 2.0 x16 which is 8000MB/s bandwidth. You're trying to run it on PCI 2.0 1x which is only 500MB/s. However, I very much doubt that the GPU uses all 8000MB/s of bandwidth, so it's unlikely it would affect the performance majorly.
      If you find any resolution to the problem it would be great to hear!

    Love your video man. One question though. Can we keep power on the graphic card ? and do we need to actually power up the graphic card first before power up the server ? What if we restart the server ? Is graphic card still reconize ?

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks mate. Always apply power to the graphics card before powering up the server. If you power off the server, turn graphics card power off after the server has shut down. If there's no power to the GPU before tuning on the server, the card may not be recognised at startup. If you pull the power on the GPU whilst the server is on, it will likely crash the server. (They're not designed to be hot swappable!)
      Hope this answers all your questions. Cheers

My solution will connect a GPU to the server, but I would suggest doing a bit of research to find out exactly the limitations.

  • @kevinr6926

    Great video. Is your server powered by external power? or with his psu?

  • @JohnSmith-yr8tl
    @JohnSmith-yr8tl 7 років тому

    So would you get a significant performance reduction bridging between that external case and the server compared to just running that same graphics card directly into a rig with the same processors as the server?
    Just seems sketchy.. I don't believe a usb3 cable can send the same amount of data at the same speed to the servers main board as you would from directly plugging the graphics card into a pcie slot.
    I don't believe you mentioned anything about how loud these servers are. These things sound like jet engines. I can hear my server running in my basement from the second floor.

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      Yes, you're right. The usb3 cable obviously can't transfer the same amount of data as if the card was directly plugged into the pci slot. So technically my R610 is pci 2.0 x8 which has a bandwidth of 4GB/s whereas the usb riser card is x1 (I assume pci 2.0) which has a bandwidth of only 500MB/s.
      I'm not sure on how much this actually effects the performance, but 500MB/s is a huge reduction from 4GB/s.
      I did mention that you'd want this in a separate room in you're house or garage, I had it running downstairs in my house for a few months and I think my network switch was actually more noisy! (Still too loud for a home environment though)
      Which server do you have?

    • @JohnSmith-yr8tl

      Dell PowerEdge R610 VMware Server Dual x5675 6-Core 3GHZ 64GB
      I tried to just unplug the some of the fans from the mainboard, so that they won't run, and the server will boot and and run for a while, but eventually it will crash. A box fan above the CPU's was just not enough to keep the CPU's cool . Right now it's just sitting in an old wooden piece of furniture to muffle the sound.
      I could immerse the entire blade in mineral oil, that would work to muffle the sound, but it would be a messy experience.

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      Wow! Nice server specs! All I can suggest is updating the firmware for all the components in the server (Just let it run through the dell update repository). Mine isn't too loud. I've had it in my bedroom for a while now and it doesn't annoy me too much.
      I wonder if it could be because your CPUs are slightly higher speced (Higher operating temperature). The server will adjust the fans to run at higher RPM depending on the model of your hardware.
      Mineral Oil Server would be a first!! Cool idea!

My question is I read alot about the PCI-E on the R710 bottle necking power to 25W, is this a similar issue with the R610 that is solved by the bridge and PSU or does this solution not work for the R710? I'd appreciate your feedback!

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому +1

      Hi, sorry for taking a while to get back to you. If the GPU you're using requires external power then you will need to wire it up to a power supply, or I have known someone to wire in extra PCI power cables from the server PSU! Yes, if the GPU tries to draw more than 25W through the PCI slot then the server will halt boot up. You can probably plug your GPU straight into the R710 if it fits, and just run some extra power cables from the server PSU or an external PSU.
      Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions. :)

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      Nope, not at all. The raid card is pretty big so will obstruct airflow and therefore increase the fan speeds (and noise). I think installing the raid card will also affect the fan rpms through the lifecycle controller. I suggest updating all firmware in the server after installing the raid card (Use the R610 dell repository). This should bring the noise level down a little through software optimisations.

      Red Phoenix Hi, basically you just connect the gpu into a pcie riser. (1x to 16x slot) something like this: rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263443041544
      You can get better band width with an 8x to 16x riser (or even just a 16x to 16x ribbon cable) 8x example: rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263443041544
      You can also go more advanced and have a look at the products these guys sell. Pretty expensive, but good throughput! www.onestopsystems.com/expansion-kits

    I want to put a usb 3 card in. Can you recommend one and is there anything special I have to do?
    I just ordered an r610. I am very new to this. Also I need to put a very cheap audio card in. It doesn’t hav to be good quality. I have software that just needs to see an audio card.
    Thanks.

    Hi... thanks for the video... I work editing video, sometimes I need to connect 3 professional videocameras Full HD to a computer for switching between the cameras in alive; and as you see I need a super powerfull machine... I was going to buy a HP Z800 workstation refurbished but I just watched your video and I wonder... ¿This kind of servers will works fine for editing video? Could I to buy a Video tarjet NVidia Quadro 4000 for working with a Video Professional monitor?
    Are these kind of Workstation very noise? or normal noise like a desktop computer?

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      Hi, Thanks for commenting. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend using a rack server for editing. This R610 is quieter than most rack servers, but noisier than a desktop (especially when it's under load). It's also easier to add in graphics cards to a desktop machine.
      Performance wise, I have tried editing on this server with dual E5520 CPUs and 16GB RAM, but it really doesn't perform very well. I barely got any CPU utilization and it was quicker to render using my i7 4770k. (I was using Adobe Media Encoder to render the footage)
      Personally, if I had the money, I would go for a single 6 or 8 core CPU. Something like the Intel Extreme Edition i7's or the E5 v3 line of Xeons (i wouldn't go any lower than that for your processing requirements).
      Any more questions, let me know!
      Regards,

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      Specs will be similar / same as an R610, however it depends on the server configuration.
      So 5500, 5600 CPUs, up to 192GB RAM, and a mass of drive configurations.
      Have a look at the service tags on the Dell support website. Should give you an idea if the hardware hasn't been changed. :)

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      I can't recommend the exact card to use, as this depends on your requirements, but I would have a look at some of the cheaper quadro cards e.g Nvidia Quadro nvs 450 or Matrox cards. You could also probably get away with putting in a low end gaming video card, but make sure it doesn't need external power. I hope this helps.

    Is USB 3 good enough to transfer ?

    • @elliottmo5869
      @elliottmo5869  7 років тому

      I don't think the riser card actually uses the USB 3.0 protocol. I think it is just using the 9 pins to transfer the PCI x1 connection data. Similar to a passive riser cable, just using a few electronics to maybe amplify the signal slightly for transfer over a longer cable. USB 3.0 protocol can theoretically transfer data at 5Gbits/second which is in between PCI 3.0 x1 and x4 so the riser may use the USB protocol, I'm not entirely sure.

    • @kroypatcha
      @kroypatcha 7 років тому

      + Elliott Mo thanks for the reply. I wish there is a solution which don't use USB port. I am not sure if using long ribbon from box to box (unprotected) be a good idea. But that for sure be PCI-e solution. Thanks
