As a Christian from birmingham uk confessions are confidential “supposedly” dependant on the priest and you can confess too any sin you’ve committed in return the priest will tell you how many Hail Marys (prayers) you have to say, hence the rosary beads which people use too count.
They shot Tommy up with adrenaline that's why he was able to handle everything before he went to Ada's.
Considering medicinal adrenalin wasn't even licenced in the UK until the mid 1930's ...and then only for anaphylaxis , that's some cutting edge treatment he got 🤣🤣

This series does a brilliant job of showing Tommy as out of control, vulnerable and scared. A unique perspective from him being so far ahead of everyone in the previous seasons.

Paddy Considine did a phenomenal job as Father Hughes, infuriating and bone chilling in equal measures, really underrated actor. I've only seen him on this and on House of the Dragon, and both times he's been fantastic, so I should really check out more of his work.
First thing I saw him in was Dead Man's Shoes. Absolutely amazing film, and he is incredible in it!

I hate this episode the most of the entire series, Polly Shelby is arguably the second most intelligent and wise character in the entire Shelby family, at times more so than even Thomas.
But they had her IQ go from like 9000 to like, 12, where she tells an outsider, a priest no less, that Thomas was going to kill a chomo priest that was blackmailing and strong arming them, and lo and behold, Thomas's plan that would have saved them, is undone because she had to suddenly need to confess about how bad she felt for no reason whatsoever as that priest Immediately ratted to him of what was gonna happen.
Like John was without question, the DUMBEST of the Shelby Brothers, but Polly's 180 turn in this episode puts him to shame.

Terrible writing on that one. When I first saw it I assumed it was intentional, to setup the priest somehow, making him do something rash...
I feel it was to prove to the Russians the priest was dirty. But it got way outta hand. He did prove his point. But paid a huge price.

Strange thing is that their dad - Tommy Flanigan - was attacked by a Glasgow gang and given a "Glasgow Smile" using either a razor blade or knife.

There is judgement in confession. The priest has to assign your penance to atone. Once you've performed your penance, you are absolved. Most people give confession shortly before Mass so they can take communion without sin on their hands.

Just wanna say Tommy has always been a savage. You mentioned that Arthur saved Tommy from going to a dark place by torturing/killing Changretta. Tommy smashed the IRA guys head in with a spit pot until it was mush.
Making sure a threat to your life is snuffed out (with some PTSD episode mixed in) is different than making a person suffer for as long as possible while enjoying it.
@@KissablePurpleMonkey I suppose so. Tommy kills multiple people though. And it’s mentioned various times throughout the show that the Blinders do torture people for information, power etc.

(religious topic) confession is secret only if not illegal act, so murder doesn't work. In principle you can confess non capital sins IF you don't do those again and do the homework the priest gives you, he WILL make you earn the forgiveness. Ex : you confess to adultery, you have to never fail for the rest of your life and probably admit it to your spouse and families and earn their forgiveness to be forgiven for your sins.
Loved your reaction as always. You should watch society of the snow. It's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one.if you do watch it I recommend the original language with subtitles, the acting was amazing
