Hi, what is the keyboard thing at 8.55 - It looks interesting Would be good to have links to the alternative devices in the description of video maybe? thanks for the video
1:00 Thank you for demonstrating how the mouse is used! This is the only video I've found that really shows what mouse movements are available and what the effects are on screen. Not even the official website shows it!
Actually you can configure how the mouse acts in software. In this video the mouse works in 'object mode' (I believe they call it this way). That means that the mouse movements correspond to the object, as if you are holding it. However, I personally prefer a virtual camera type mode (I think they call it 'helicopter' mode). Then the controls correspond more towards controlling the virtual camera (ex. push stick to the left, makes the camera go left (and thus the object seems to go right)). It just works more intuitively with my brain. Anyways, its configurable.
My old space navigator bought 10 years ago has lost its soft touch coat very quickly too. But later, when the coat completely gone, the underlying layer started to become sticky and greasy. I just removed it completely with a cotton pad and isopropyl alcohol. Now it’s simply a glossy plastic, but it works and feels absolutely fine. I’m still wondering who the f came up with idea to put this stupid coat on some surface which is in contact with fingers and sweat all the time. :-/
True, They got the "feel" correct, but did not consider robustness... This is similar to putting a carpet or rug on a floor that has high foot traffic. It may be best to leave it as a hard floor of some sort to avoid the inevitable wear.
Odd, my 8-9 year old SpaceNavigator is in pristine condition, with daily use. Could be that depending on ones grip, you could accidentally nick the coating with your nails over time?
Unless you’re working in the surgery gloves, even the most clean hands leave some sweat over time, even if you clean the device regularly and thoroughly. Surprisingly, same problem happened to many other of my devices with soft touch - like mice, keyboards, phone cases etc. Silicone which it is based on is quite known for loosing its initial condition over time.
Can you orbit with the Spacemouse whilst in the midst of an operation? Often, in a situation where you want to select multiple edges, it'd be nice to be able to rotate the model
What about the StreamDeck? I've bought a StreamDeck XL (currently waiting for delivery) and about to buy SpaceMouse Compact, hoping that combo will work out nicely.
Sounds good! It is surprising they haven't made a major revision to the space mouse in a while... They changed the outside shape, but never made any updates to the internal sensors or software.
I would argue no. You could only use it to zoom and pan, and the mouse is good enough for that, I think. That being said, try it if you use CAD all the time.
Can anyone advise if the functionality of this 3D mouse is the same as the older (2005) USB Magellan/3Dconnexion Space Mouse? Buttons aside, does the central palm device act the same and allow 6-axis movement?
Remember the one with the huge ball? I can't speak for the model you mentioned, but I would be very surprised to hear this has less degrees of freedom... Once you use one of these new ones, you will be hooked (I'd say).
I found that a Swiftpoint Z gaming mouse works very well with my Spacemouse Pro, and has a very high resolution. I mainly use these two together in Rhino, and the Swiftpoint Z mouse mostly alone in AutoCAD. The Swiftpoint Z has many buttons that are programable through their desktop app that functions well within various CAD & modeling software. Some of the buttons are even pressure sensitive allowing you to map up to 3 functions per button. My 2 Cents. Oh yeah......My 7 year old Spacemouse Pro's rubberized coating has become sticky and kind of gross feeling. It has not been exposed to sunlight, just overhead office lighting in a 70 degree year round environment. This is the only CON I have with the Pro.
@@AvivMakesRobots I can't remember how i came across my Swiftpoint Z, but before I eventually did I took a close look at 3D Connexion's mouse and it just didn't grab me either. Cheers!
You forget the Stream deck. I have 3D printed a base for the Spacemouse Wireless and the Stream deck above that on an angle. Perfect, not only for streaming but specialy for cad drawing.
Just picked up an unopened super old SpaceNavigator the rubber was all gooey even though it was never used. It came right off with some rubbing alcohol. I couldn't pass up the price not knowing if I'd like using it. It's crazy weird right now and I had to reverse all of the directions for fusion.
I know there are settings you can change for flipping the directions. Looks like the defaults for it were the issue. Always found the mouse to work out of the box with Fusion.
The keyboard uses the right hand which is on the mouse. The left is on the 3D mouse, and the breakout board can be operated without fully moving your left hand if it is positioned alongside it.
If that rubber doesn’t peal off, it becomes sticky. I used orange oil to remove the goo. I have not used mine that much because i use houdini and it doesn’t support it in Linux and the windows implementation isn’t how I like the camera movement. (Just copy sketchup).
@@AvivMakesRobots as far as sticky goo mess that took 6 years to happen. But I can see why they made it have that rubberised texture for the first year’s presentation.
@@isstuff Yeah, I agree. To me, the feel matters a lot more than the looks. It would have been nice to see a rubber cover-sleeve shrunken on it instead. They forgot it wears in people's hands.
@@AvivMakesRobots yeah a rubber / silicone sleeve with a lip at the bottom could be stretched over and stay in place. Anything with that rubberised surface will be a goo mess in 7 years. But it is cheaper and the price of the humble space navigator is worth a few compromises. I wish it was supported by more software (the way sketchup does)
@@isstuff Definitely. I hope there will be another company that makes space mice also. 3D Connexion is the only one. Competition would mean lower prices and better features.
Its funny actually, I'm watching your videos, and others to try and learn fusion, to make my own left hand controller I'm still not decided if I am going to incorporate a space nav into it or not, the keypad part will be similar to the caravel and maybe a bit of azeron
I see... Maybe a joystick button is better. They have ones that are compatible with arduino/ rasberry pi and can probably offer some of the functionality of the spacemouse.
Hey, I hope you do not mind some unwarranted advice. I'm also heavy CAD users, 10+ years and probably longer as a UA-cam viewer. 1) Remove the "uh" and "umm" and pauses in your sentences. 2) Having just a picture and your voice over is pretty boring. Add text and graphics to the image to give me more to pay attention too. 3) My understanding is that you haven't tried most of these tools but are giving your opinion on it. That's not inherently a bad thing but speaking from experience adds more credibility. 4) Ask yourself, what is the goal of this video? I see three goals, your opinion on the 3D mouse, your opinion on alternative 3D mice, and multi-button input devices. Your title though indicates the goal is your opinion on the 3D mouse. This shifting of goals isn't inherently bad but is not the general motif of UA-cam videos. Honestly, if you made a 3 minute video hitting hard on the pros and cons of the 3DConnexion 3D mouse, you would get a lot more views. This would also serve as a video review for people looking to purchase a 3D mouse. This is a niche field and luckily it isn't flooded with people yet so you have time to hone your skill. Keep up the good work! P.S. practice by copying from the popular, you'll naturally pickup some of the key details.
Thank you! :] the advice is appreciated. I don't want to be a review channel, but a lot of people say the enterprise is much better and to me it's not the case. I have used it as a colleague has one.
Why is it that so many people today cannot pronounce the word BUTTON? ...It has TWO T's in the middle, and they are not saying EITHER of them distinctly. They say, "buh-un." It sounds like they're drunk or just came from the dentist.
