Accused DUI driver who crashed into Florida trooper laughs in first court appearance

- As 52-year-old Kristen Kay Watts of Sarasota made her first appearance, she told a judge she is unemployed and is living off money from a lawsuit.
Investigators said Watts was driving in a BMW while intoxicated and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. She plowed through barriers that were set up during the annual Skyway 10K, but it took a trooper to put herself in harm's way to stop Watts.

The angle she got her suv into was pretty perfect!
@@UncleEarl97
Yes and no; while it can never be classified as insignificant, it can be anywhere from minor (i.e., relatively quick to recover from with no long lasting noticeable effect) to severe or even life threatening.
Concussion severity can never be judged strictly from how fast or how hard the hit, as some seemingly minor impacts have actually led to death, while what appears to be a major impact has not left any noticeable injuries, even through MRIs and such.
Health, angles of impact, stress or relaxation (which is why more drunk people survive horrendous car accidents with minor injuries then fully conscious and aware people), muscular structure, and other factors all play a major role in how well a particular persons body handles and survives injuries (especially Traumatic Brain Injuries, or TBI, as the category concussions fall under).
Blunt head trauma is not evident right away. There can be a gradual manifestation of symptoms of neurological damage.

@Endless Nameless buddy, you can't be that bad if you admit you are trying to be better.
Hey! Don’t call us drunk drivers bad because of a drunk crasher. I don’t go around blaming sober drivers for the actions of sober crashers.. 😠
@Endless Nameless some years ago, I was driving home from work at 4am.
Came across an SUV, flipped over, smashed.
I quickly searched the car, found no one, finally found the guy, bloody, on the phone yelling at someone to come help him get his car.
He asked me not to call the police, it was his 4th DUI.
"Buddy, I gotta call 9/11 you are bloody and could have internal bleeding." Is what I said.

Wow, the police officer who steered her car in to the direction of the drunk driver went above and beyond her role as a police officer. It's situations like this which restore faith in the police force. Sadly, situations like this are not as frequent as many of us would like to see - police officers acting with a view to serve the community in preference to infringing upon our civil liberties.

I've lost an aunt uncle, cousin, and 2 friends to drunk drivers. There is nothing in the world I despise more than alcoholics. I even met one that had a ankle bracelet. A young 20 something girl released from prison after ending 2 peoples lives.

It’s astonishing just how acceptable drunk driving is in the US. Hopefully this attitude is changing. Much stiffer penalties are required. As is a MUCH harder driving test.
Driving is a privilege, not a right.
Welp that's the American way! Marijuana which kills no one is more dangerous than someone driving drunk. America, Land of the free. Home of the idiotic.
stiffer penalties will not work.
It isn't acceptable? First offense is 10k dollar fine and suspension of drivers license.
2nd offense is 25k dollar fine, possible prison time, and revoking of the drivers license.
3rd is 2 to 3 years imprisonment, and 50k dollar fine. And in most states permanent revoke of the drivers license.
It is one of the stiffest punishable offense on the road.
