Anime is an adaptation from a type of literature with pictures called Manga, similar to very long comics. Since normal cartoons are not adapted from literature or are made from comics the plot rarely carries from episode to another unless enough episodes are reached to allow this reoccurrence.

Anime is its own form of art that uses drawings and stories and music and emotions to invite the watcher into a learning experience of the mind and heart. Anime is obviously cartoons, only that it has a way different perspective than the one from cartoons such as Looney Tunes, which is the perspective American cartoons have. Anime always intends to create stories with powerful meaning and themes that tends to be directed to teens. Although, you are one of many people who view this topic differently, of course. Yes, that is true, another defining feature is violence, anime is often quite brutal or extreme, where cartoon is low-cut in comparison, though not all anime and cartoon are like that, take Hyouka or The Simpsons, one is an anime with little to no violence, one is a cartoon with little to no plot line yet quite brutal at times.
Anime is cartoons, just a subcategory determined by whether they're by the Japanese style or not. Besides, there exists "cartoons and anime" for all ages.
There are TONS of anime that are marketed for all age groups. Where cartoons in America are generally for kids. I don't see many cartoons with people getting getting their hearts ripped out, rape (Berserk), or even long running plots that focus on a end goal.
