Since I didn't have a spare pressure relief valve on hand and was worried about it failing and not having a replacement on hand, I simply turned the water heater breaker off(running off electric only at the time being), and ran the hot water for a while, washing dishes, doing some chores, and washing my hands to get the water in the tank as cool as possible. Then I shut off the water outside, then opened up my inside faucets to relieve the pressure. This worked perfect, and I didn't get sprayed at all. Thanks for sharing your video sir!
I usually take it out every year and re insert or replace. This year I could not get it to thread. I tried another and couldn't get it to go. I watched your video and read a comment you made to someone else about tipping the anode up. It went right in. Unfortunately the new one had a pinhole leak in the center so I replaced it with the old one. It was still good as new. It didn't leak. Thanks for the help. You saved me a lot of grief.
Just changed mine! Made me nervous tightening it back up haha it would leak a little and I barely tightened until it quit! Made me feel like I was over tightening but guess not. Thanks for the video
@@RobertasFreedomJourney That is a good time to do the heating element too. I have a video on that how to do that, if you already haven't watched it. I would strongly recommend getting the heating element wrench, I have a link in my video description. Here's that video: ua-cam.com/video/wOHWA1Zt2YI/v-deo.html I'm glad the videos are helpful! That is always nice to hear :)
Thank you! I know, it's crazy! Since then, ours has not gotten nearly as consumed as that one. I wonder if it was just a cheaper anode or something. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for giving the socket sizes for the removal. I called my dealer and they just said 1 1/16, but that does not work on mine, too loose. I will get a 27 metric as you gave as an alternate size and try that.
Good stuff and thanks for sharing. I only had one question, does there have to be water in the tank in order to replace the anode, or can the anode be replaced with a new one regardless if there’s no water in the tanks? It is much appreciated!
Wondering - when you're done, and turn the water valve back open, then do you just turn on the pump and run the hot water side faucet until water comes out and then it's ok to turn on the electric or gas to water heater? Also, if you've opened the pressure relief valve during clean out, do you shut it again just before you start to fill up with water or wait to shut it when water starts coming out the pressure valve?
Good question! Your steps should look like this...... Close the pressure relief valve, turn your water pump on, and open the hot water faucet. Your pump should fill up your hot water tank. It will probably run for a minute or two, that is at least what ours does. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching!
I would try getting some PB blaster and hitting the threads of the anode with that. Let it sit for an hour or more, spray it again, wait another hour or so. Then try to remove it. If that doesn't work, you could try to get more leverage by adding a pipe on the end of your socket or get a breaker bar. Breaker bars come in handy, so if you don't have one in your tool kit, it might be worth the investment. Here's one on Amazon: amzn.to/3nY08ox Harbor Frieght also sells reasonable priced breaker bars. My 1/2" breaker bar is from Harbor Freight, it's great! I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Is your drain plug plastic? If yes, you do not have an anode. That means you probably have an aluminum tank. Since those won't rust, there is no need for the anode. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Question, the threads that accept the anode rod have lots of mineral deposit. I used a wire brush and cleaned it. Now the new rod will not screw in so the threads are not showing. Any suggestions?
Mine did the same thing when I replaced the anode rod. As long as you screwed it in as tight as you can, it should be good. Have you tried adding water to the tank to see if it leaks?
Dumb Question. whats the process for refilling hot water tank? after changing anode/ Ive always had anode as part of the service and want to do this my self
We fill our fresh water tank and turn the water pump on. Our camper will fill our water heater tank first and the the rest of the water will go in the fresh tank. Thanks for watching!
Are you still able to remove the head of the anode? If you can't get it out, I guess technically it probably wouldn't hurt anything. It's self-sacrificial, so it will eventually break down.
It's hard, since there is so much weight on the end of the anode you have to almost tilt the anode up while screwing it back in. I had the same problem with mine. Hopefully you got it in there. Thanks for watching!
At the time of the video, the Broncos had Peyton Manning and were kickin butt. The following season we won the Super Bowl. The Broncos have basically sucked since then but being a Colorado native I'm still a fan. 3 Super Bowl wins and 8 Super Bowl appearances, that is better then the majority of the NFL teams. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I have a rv I’ve been living in for 2 years now and am going to change the anode out now that I know about it. I had a question for you sir, I don’t ever put the pump to ON. The scene in the video that showed the red pump switch and also says galley, grey, black, fresh, and battery. I never turn the pump to ON but I still use water heater, shower, dishes etc. Do you think I’m ruining something by not turning my red pump switch ON?

Lol, that would be another proper way of doing things! At the time I didn't think to use the relief valve. Thanks for the comment and watching!

If you pull open the lever on your pressure relief valve you wont get sprayed as you did on this video.
Lol, someone else had mentioned that to me after the video!
Yep, and it will let you know if you need to replace the TPR valve because it will more than likely leak after you release it.

After changing rod, do I turn the little Switch on or leave it off? Switch on heater ? It's off right now.
Which switch? The electric element switch? Water heater switch?
I took off my drain plug but they're wasn't an anode attached, I have a 2008 denali fifth wheel, how do I find the anode?
