- Mix of rarely seen planes flying low over the tree tops at Dunsfold Wings and Wheels airshow in Surrey, England.
It's a great buzz when you don't see them coming and all of a sudden they appear over the trees upon you, in an exciting fashion!
Aircraft in the video include:
Tornado GR4
Hawker Hunter Miss Demeanour
Gloster Meteor
Vulcan XH558
RAF Lancaster PA474
RCAF Lancaster FM213
That is really a super bit of filming. You cannot really get anymore British than that, great selection of historic and modern aircraft and a lovely game of cricket on the village green. Absolutely splendid, Bravo👌
I would even go out LBW just so I could watch the planes.🤪
I was thinking the same thing
@@haydenbrown8421 Caught and bowled by the vulcan 😉
@@bobsurgranny I just watched your video again and I think it one of the best videos I have seen. Its in a natural location, no blearing commentary, typical Englishness with the cricket, Oak tress and a Union Jack, a few deck chairs and you get some of the best angles on the aircraft that probably the people at the airshow don't see.The sound is very good, people just out enjoying the spectacle. Again brilliant from me. Thumbs up.
Please pass the Pimm's and soda
Anyone that has seen a Vulcan bomber take off will NEVER forget it. You don't just see it, hear it.....you actually feel it!
Saw the Vulcan at RAF Waddington several years running.
been so long since i actually felt a vulcan lol , Doby atmos amp
@@allandrummond2420 I was a kid when i saw one, ground vibrating, having a Vulcan sending vibrations up yer inside leg is quite an experience! :) hehe
So true. I saw her on many occasions, the last one was her last show at RIAT about 5-7 years ago. Beautiful British engineering at its very best. I'll never forget the Vulcan roar as she spirled up on the runway.
Can confirm. I saw the last flying Vulcan at the Biggin Hill Air show in 1989 or 90, and the ground beneath my feet literally resonated with the roar from it. I'll never forget it.
As an American living in the mid-west, I was fortunate to see three in service Vulcans. Witnessed XL-390's last flight in 1978; The RAF returned in 1980 with XL-446. XM-575 came in 1981 nearly at the end of her service life, and here I was lucky beyond belief getting an inside / outside tour along with the Nimrod that was also in town.
As an Englishman, living in the ..erm...England. I had quite a few Airfix model planes. Most were English, The Spitfire (obviously), the Lancaster, the Mosquito, the Hurricane. But there was an American fighter which I absolutely adored, that of course being the P51 Mustang. Superb aircraft!
@@madspaniel4271 I wouldn't assume your nationality is where your home is at as I have also lived in your country as well.
As for the models -- Should've built a Hustler, or something exotic like that. I can see "our stuff" any day, so I gravitated to the foreign. Hasegawa did a lot of those.
Most of mine were Revell, and Monogram as the latter was based here locally, we could just go direct to them wholesale. back in the day.
I nearly had a heart attack thinking the Vulcan was flying again...saw one of it's last flights at Bournemouth air show years ago. After reading the comments I see that it's old footage 😞 fantastic footage though, thanks.
Just makes you proud of our country seeing the spitfire , hurricane and Lancaster flying over a cricket match on the green , what could represent Britain more than that 👍
When I was kid in the 80's we used to get Vulcans doing low level runs in the valleys around my uncle's farm in Wales; you'd be out on a hillside, and suddenly whoooom this huge thing would roar up over you, often with another aircraft nearby. More than a couple of times I'd be bowled over in shock - and lie there awestruck as it howled over, so close that it felt I could reach out and touch it. Good times!
The manoeuvrability of the Vulcan for such a huge bomber was unbelievable.
💯
And to think, it's immediate predecessor was the Lancaster bomber... it's unbelievable almost how quickly we advanced
Great footage! Amazing to think that there was only 11 years between the first flight of the Lancaster and Vulcan.
Know what you mean but Chadwick and his Lancaster was not as forward thinking as Stuart Davies and Roy Ewans and the vulcan team. Chadwick got as far as looking at Nazi delta wing design and thought, that's a good idea and was promptly killed in one of his own designs !!
@@NoPooftersHereUK1234 That's kind of what I was getting at, that the Vulcan was that forward thinking. From fairly conventional (although magnificent) piston engine design to something that made contemporary 1950s Sci Fi look dated.
Glad you enjoyed watching these clips. Yes that advancement is such a short period of time is amazing
And 28 from the Lancaster to (supposedly) flying to the moon 🤡
@@bobsurgranny was tht vulcan flying 12 days ago
I remember seeing the last flight of this Vulcan , and the two Lancasters flying with spitfires and hurricane at Shoreham is one of my all time highlights from an airshow.
Fantastic Presentation .. I was lucky enough to witness a full engine start up of a Lancaster Bomber at RAF Coningsby a few years ago, standing about 20 feet away from The Phantom of the Ruhr .. now that's an experience I'll never forget 😲
You lucky bugger.😉 Thanks for capturing a great event (so well), & for sharing it. 👍😃👍
always a good feeling watching the planes at this spot, especially the Tornado role demo jets appearing at speed over the trees.
glad you enjoyed seeing these clips 👍🤗
Can never forget the "Vulcans Howl" and the amazing lift from that wing. I Can still imagine what the Avro Vulcan and Avro Arrow flying in close would have looked like. Beautiful. THANK YOU for posting this vid
Pleased you enjoyed seeing these clips 👍
I was lucky enough to see a Avro Vulcan fly at the 50th anniversary of the battle of britain air show in 1989 at boscombe down. We flew our EC-130 in from Sembach AB Germany. Thanks for sharing..
This clip is years old. XM558 made her last flight several years ago, as while she was still airworthy her ground crew were starting to decompose (god love 'em) and the only other airworthy lanc is in private ownership in Canada - they very kindly brought her over for a few airshows one year as we can see here but again it was several years ago.
Yup
Thought so
That explains the poor quality of the video.
2 airworthy lancs now
I was thinking that - I donated a couple of times to the efforts to preserve the aircraft and hadn't seen any news of them being able to get it (actively) airworthy again.
I was there , two Lancaster bombers and the Vulcan , well done Avro what brilliant designs ..
When was this show?
The sound of Lancasters makes me shiver!!beautiful.
Having two fly over together was pretty special
Tornadoes with wings swept back - always an impressive sight. Vulcan with the deep bass sound on turns - peculiar unique sound. Think that deep noise it does comes off the various peak and troughs on the wing leading edges, if I remember right I was told in the RAF years ago.
The sheer power of these aircraft always sends a shiver down my spine, I once saw two eurofighters pass and barrel roll around each other before punching out into a vertical right infront of me in the morning after a festival, it was like a dream
I saw the Vulcan at an airshow in South East England in the 80's. When it flew low you could hear it creaking. Sooo fabulous it almost stopped my heart.
I remember an air show once and Vulcan just appeared from right behind us for the beginning of its display, it swept down and pulled up with full afterburners, boy I got some real goosebumps from that.
Pure aviation gold , thanks for sharing
Pleased you enjoyed watching 😉
That Vulcan is an awesome beast of a plane. And how amazing to see the two Lancaster's flying together, absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for video. Fantastic! ✌️😎
💯 Glad you enjoyed watching these clips 😉
Saw the lancs spitfires and hurricanes at Southport on the misty Saturday seeing them come through the fog was so haunting cried my eyes out was simply stunning
Nothing like a Vulcan to this day. Epic.
💯👍🖖
Saw it last flight ever. What a beautiful aircraft.
Two Lancs and a Vulvan. Unbelievably good to watch. The Vulcan is one of the most amazing things to see fly!
💯 Pleased you enjoyed watching these clips 🤗
I stood by the runway at Brunty before XH558 was returned to flight and was only taxying. The only time I felt my nasal cavity and could feel its shape in its hollowness as it vibrated to the astounding noise.
Xm558 made its last flight several years ago. I watched one of its last displays at cosford.
Sad to see her grounded for good.
Sure is. You'd think someone with the doe would buy it up
@@bobsurgranny ownership is not why she doesn't fly anymore.
The charity that own her would still have her flying today if it was legally possible, but the CAA will not grant a licence without manufacturer tech support. BAE and the other technical support companies withdrew their support, so the licence could not be extended.
That's the reason she was grounded.
The howl of the Vulcan is awesome in real life truly special aircraft
Fantastic. My son and I were at the 'Wings and Wheels' show that day when both Lancaster's displayed. I also seem to remember that either that year, or another at which the Vulcan appeared, it had got 'lost' enroute due to fog and cloud and he was late arriving. We were listening in on my scanner.
Great days and such a pity that show is no more. Thanks for the happy memories!
What an incredible air show. Loved the Vulcan Bomber Fighter jet! Absolutely brilliant!
Glad you enjoyed watching 😉
That's just priceless, isn't it? Tornado's, Hunter, Meteor, Vulcan and no less than two Lancasters (that sound of 8 Merlins roaring!). You and (I figure) your son must have had the day of your lives. Thanks a lot for sharing the joy with us. I'm certain Bob ain't my granny, but if you'll adopt me as your nephew, Bob's my uncle from now on. ;) Cheers!
I saw the Vulcan on one of its last flights. It's sad that we'll not see it fly again.
Brilliant footage. And they carried on with the cricket as though nothing was going on! Lovely film of the Vulcan.
I hope the umpire could lipread.
The Britts do such an amazing job at honoring their warbird past. The U.S. is so focused on the latest and greatest. As an American I get goosebumps watching that Vulcan bomber, I love the Vulcan Howl. I also love those Lancasters, what a sight!
Pleased you enjoyed and can appreciate our planes 👍
Plenty more Vulcan and Lancaster footage to come!
Nice video. What I find incredible is to think that those two iconic bombers, the Lancaster and the Vulcan (both built by Avro) were designed by the same person, the late Roy Chadwick. Even more incredible that, whilst there was 10 years separating the first flights of each (1942 and 1952), the Vulcan was designed in response to a 1947 specification in effect separating the designs of each aircraft by just 5 years!
The fact there are only ten years separating those two aircraft is really amazing. Talk about giant leaps in tech.
@@thebigc8224 on a related subject, consider the American B52 which also coincidentally first flew in 1952. Here we have an aircraft that has received multiple upgrades and is expected to stay in service until 2050. That would be like a bomber from 1920s still being in service today! It seems inconceivable but really demonstrates the leaps made in those first 50 years of flight.
That Avro Vulcan was stunning, one of the most beautiful planes still...
You were so lucky to see the two Lancs. Both were booked to do the airshow in my home town of Folkestone in 2014. But our Thumper got grounded in France the pmorning of the show, so we only got to see the Canadian one. Always knew that would be a missed opportunity. Love seeing XH558. Always liked a Hawker Hunter, such a photogenic plane. Great to see a Tornado again too. They were always one of my favourites.
... that second Lancaster was a rare thing, visiting from Canada that year - had to fly over the Atlantic, stopping once to refuel (Iceland?) then had to be "certified" to fly with the RAF (military) Lanc, since it is a civilian aircraft. She's called "Vera" (VR-A registration). Awesome footage... great to see them fly together, escorted by Spitfires!
Fantastic film work on such difficult Aircraft. Love the Lancs, Remember Those Who Gave Their Lives For Us!
Took the words right out of my mouth!👍
Thanks 👍
Seen the Vulcan at many Leuchars air shows and it was always the highlight for me. The sound was unbelievable
Will always love seeing the Tornado, the noise the sheer speed and those swept wings 👍
The Vulcan is the most beautiful airplane I've ever seen!
Including Concord!
My two favs 👍😉
I love the sound of what their engines make! Its beautiful
💯👍
Thank you for sharing, it’s such a shame we will never see the truly majestic Vulcan fly again.
I remember the Vulcan at Brize Norton in the eighties during an RCDS event come stonking in on the 26 heading and then sit on its arse and climb vertically for ages, what a sight and what a noise...Awsome
The Vulcan is such a surreal looking plane
Came to the video for the absolutely amazing noise of the Vulcan.... left satisfied :)
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Those Vulcans are amazing!!
To think they were designed in the late 40s is pretty amazing too
Blimey, what nostalgia, I didn’t realise that so many of these remarkable jet powered beasts were still airworthy. Great to see a Meteor flying still as well as those other 50s (Ok, The Meteor is 40s), shame that there are no EE Lightnings still flying.
The Vulcan was the loudest plane I’ve ever had flow low over me, an astonishing machine, to think they were used in anger as recently as the Falklands conflict is pretty incredible..
Vulcan shots are 2012. It got grounded in 2015..
Never seen a Vulcan but saw the Sr 71 when I was a kid and it made an impression. Next to that it'd have to be the B1. When it took off if you had an alarm on your car set it was blaring after the take off roll lol. Great video!
I’ve been in love with the Vulcan ever since the James Bond movie with them in it. Just aesthetically pleasing to me.
Some excellent camera footage there, now in my mid fifties, but seeing that Vulcan footage brought back fond childhood memories of living with my parents just down the road from RAF Waddington, were the Vulcans would scramble on a daily basis, l would stand in the garden as a child and watch in ore as the ground would shake, and the power of those awesome engines would resonate throughout my body.
Blimey what memories you must have seeing them in service out of wadd.
Glad you enjoyed these clips 😉👍
Amazing that the Vulcans Engines, Rolls Royce Olympus, also powers the prettiest passenger jet
Concord, sadly missed.
bristol olympus, as used in the TSR.2, withreheat added.
RR later took ownership of the design. but the vulcan uses Bristol engines.
Wow - 2 Lancs. How utterly brilliant.

Wonderful vid, thanks. Old aircraft stops play, for a change. Must have been a long couple of innings.
Have I missed something ? I didn't think Vulcans were allowed to fly anymore. Or is this an old Air show ?
@@markwestwood9730 This is from 2012 and the Lancs were 2014
@@bobsurgranny @Mark Westwood - I was thinking the same until I read what you said bob. I had the privilege of seeing XH588 perform at its final airshow in Southport, if you have a search on UA-cam - you can find the actual final flight of XH588, gently cruising down the valleys of the west coast. Awesome :)

The Vulcan is such a graceful plane,I live next to Shoreham airport and before the sad horrific accident that we had the year before we had the Vulcan fly,a flying piece of history x
To see not 1 but 2 of the only airworthy lancaster bombers is a amazing sight. We soon could be having 3 in the air.
Be great to have another one up in the sky where it belongs 😉👍
This feels like a weird dream. Great stuff
The sound of those eight Merlin engines is magic.
💯
The Lancaster bomber ,a beautiful plane ,and the sound of freedom from those merlin engines
Seeing the Vulcan brought back vivid memories of seeing 4 of them do a demo scramble at a show in 1980.
Blimey! The sound must have been incredible for that.
Thanks for sharing 👍
@@bobsurgranny It was. I can't recall the RAF station but I know it was a Battle of Britain commemorative show outside Doncaster. Just before the Vulcan takeoffs there was a simulated air attack by some Jaguars.
@@bobsurgranny The station could have been RAF Finningley. It popped into my head.

That is quite the collection of vintage aircraft. Amazing!
Glad you enjoyed watching
My fave when in the RAF was working on the Sepecat Jaquars, avionics. It was a flying farm tractor, could land on a potato field if needed. It's undercarriage was agricultural strong.
Man I loved the Jag
That Vulcan looked like it could slip stall at anytime
I saw XL-390 do that very thing and crash killing 4. 11Aug 78 Glenview Il. USA.
He was lucky to get out of that, must have misjudged it, looked like he was going in for sure.
I didn’t think there were any Vulcans still flying. Good to see there is at least one

What a sight, to be there to see a take off and landing must give you goosebumps 👏
Always enjoyed watching the planes at this relaxing spot.
Glad you enjoyed these clips 😉
I remember walking around the back of Southend Airport with my Mum where the Vulcan Restoration Trust was working on the grounded airframe there.
At first I thought they were waving to tell us to go away. But no, they helped up onto the top and let me walk around on top of it. 1990s of course, wouldn't be allowed to do anything like that now.
Shame none of these are left flying. I hope that maybe if the cost of one off printed parts comes down that we could make brand new copies of aircraft (and cars etc) of models that we no longer have.
Great work, especially the Vulcan! I didn't know until now the Vulcan had dive brakes.
Nice to see the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster getting some recognition.
I remember seeing the Vulcan at RAF Finningley years ago at the air show. Put a big smile on my face seeing it.
Those Finningley shows looked so much fun
As a Yank, I’ve always loved our military aircraft like the F-15, F-14, B-1, B-52, and many others. But seeing those Tornados scream across the field put a smile on my face. It’s also been a favorite of mine and is such a cool plane. But that Vulcan is downright majestic!!! There’s really no other word to describe it. Bravo, Brits! Bravo.......👏
Looks like the giant Teradactyl or Kaiju in the Japanese horror film, Rodan from 1956.
Glad you enjoyed it
Vulcan is very dinosaur like, looks and sounds 😉
I haven’t seen a Vulcan since I was stationed in England in the ‘70s. What an awesome Aircraft.
💯 Must have some great memories seeing them in service
Probably the best footage ever !!
I can't get enough of the Vulcan!!!
The Vulcan is my favourite military aircraft of all time, I just think it's stunning. I get giddy like a child when I see videos of one flying. I've no real 'attachment' to it - I describe it akin to how some kids love firetrucks! I'll be damned if I'm ever going to grow up though! ahahaha
Thank you for that magnificent show! My father flew some of those aircraft !
Gee, I can't decide which was more exciting; watching the cricket or the aircraft. Whoever posted this did a great job on the camera work.
Thanks. Glad you were excited watching the planes appear over the trees 😉
This encapsulates everything that we love about our aircraft heritage. The sights, the sounds, the striking lines of design against the sky and most importantly The History ! Vulcan will be missed but to see two Lancs is an absolute treat.

I love you Brits honestly and i love your commitment to the cause and a lot of your old air plains. the spitfire, Huricane, and Landcaster.... and the Mesquito were sweet, but its time to modernize. That Tornado is a relic now

When I was child in the 60's through 70's the Vulcans used to fly over my council estate at between 200 & 500 ft agl then fly into the local valleys in S Wales after coming across the Severn Estuary from England. Saw F4 Phantoms, Hawker Hunters, etc but I've never seen another v wing flying. Saw a dogfight between 2 harriers less than 2000 ft agl over my house then later came the Tornadoes and very rare once were F111's.
When i was learning to fly at Swansea airport I had a Tornado go underneath me on a solo, they would call going to hit North Gower in 1 min and you went up or stayed where you were as they knew where I was but I didn't know where they were. If I had had the video technology of today I could show you that it was a daily occurrence these aircraft flying over our council estate.
Ive learned that everything called “Vulcan” is a beast. Aston martin, Avro, star trek species, etc.
