Sony's Optical Steady Shot (OSS) is seldom talked about these days as the IBIS system has taken over

  • Many people that shoot a ton of video don't realize that the OSS (optical steady shot) that is built into over 14 of their full-frame lenses assists even the best bodies with IBIS (in body image stabilization). Using OSS lenses with IBIS bodies creates an addative result which makes getting really sharp and crisp results for both stills and video. On those occasions where a gimbal is not used, it can make the difference of making the shot work, even without external steady aids like gimbals, tripods, and monopods.

    You are right about the 24-105. Using a Sony A7R3 with that lens, I took photos of some family members in low light with the lens wide open and got some incredible shots that even blew my mind. Eyes and eyelashes of my subjects were super sharp. I didn't think I could be steady enough to pull that off. The two, lens and body, worked incredibly well together.

      Thanks for sharing. Every once in a while some youtube will do a "which lens is sharpest" video and when they use any Sony body to shoot it, they are all really sharp even hand held because of the IBIS and depending on the lens, OSS.

    Sony SEL 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS also has OSS. I'm thinking to get that because of the budget.

      100% as long as you are using a crop sensor body that it's designed for like the A6700/FX30.

      @@PMRTV I'm thinking to buy also a6700. I have canon 250D atm. So a6700 would be great hybrid camera since Im now also into the video things. Are E 16-55mm F2.8 G APS-C Wide-angle Zoom G Lens and SEL 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS good for video with a6700? What do you suggest as small prime lens for a6700 around 24mm ? Trying to collect a lot of information. The camera and those lenses costs like 3000 euros.

    Ive saved up around $2k, and currently have an a6000. Would you recommend getting something like the 200-600 or should I get a full frame camera before I consider fe lenses

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  5 місяців тому +1

      Dang. That's a tough one. I made some amazing images with the a6000 back in the day but Sony's emphasis is 100% behind FF cameras and lenses. the future is definitely FF in Sony land. But glass is king and is more important than your camera in the long run. Remember though that on your A6000, the 200-600 would be a 300mm-900mm zoom. if you are shooting eagles on the nest, it's perfect! LOL

    Hi Patrick, been following you since I became a Sony shooter and enjoy your content. A question, why the bits of tape stuck on the lenses?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  5 місяців тому +3

      in sports photography, most of us that traveled to shoot games picked a certain color of tape to mark all of our gear. You'd be surprised how easy it is ti mix things up when you are setting remotes with 50 other shooters at the KY Derby or at the Slam Dunk contest. If someone steals something from you at the end of a game, you want to have a chance to see them too. Hence, I picked orange as my color because I live in Knoxville where the Big Orange are King. Later, Sony also uses orange as their color so it was easy for me to continue :)

      As with most primes they are faster glass to get more light and let you use faster shutter speeds, so you don't need it.

    Hi Patrick, I have the A74 and 200-600, when shooting birds in low light conditions (e.g. a deep forest), I´m using a monopod and going under 1/600…How would you set the OSS on the lens in this situation? When working with monopods, OSS on the lens ON or OFF? Please your advice, thank you in advance!

      OSS and IBIS ON. Set the switch on the lens to the middle position for excellent pans. Turn off all Stabilization on a tripod

    Hi Patrick - Hope all is well. What insurance do you have for your camera gears for drop and spill and for stolen/theft when you travel internationally?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  4 місяці тому

      A good type of insurance to look into is called marine insurance. The idea is that you can get on a ship and leave the country and you are covered. This type is a little more costly but might be worth it if you travel a great deal.

    Quick question…me and my cousin have been debating on camera body vs lenses. I have a Sony a7iii. I also have a Sony 16-35 f4, Sony 35 1.8, Sony 85 1.8, tamron 70-180 2.8. I said my next move should be a Sony a7iv vs a Sony 70-200 v2 because I have lenses to get most jobs done. He says upgrade the 70-200 lens for the better percentage of hit rate with the 70-200 v2. I say the a7iv number 1 to have a second body, number 2 to have a better lowlight capability and more autofocus points to help with hit rate. I shoot sports, portraits, and events. In your opinion, what should be my next move?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  3 місяці тому

      you will want to get one of the two sony 70-200 f/2.8's for the ability to attach the 1.4x teleconverter too. He's right. The Tamron 70-180 is a great lens but without the TC, it's a bust.

    Sony need to be held more accountable for bean-counting greed, instead of getting a free pass for including IBIS in SOME but not all of their bodies. Many of their cinema cameras need OSS badly in every single lens, but Sony almost never delivers. Other manufacturers do. This greed needs to stop. As this video alludes to (but doesn't argue strongly for), combining a push-pull system such as Canon and Panasonic results in much better stabilization than one or the other technology. Sony knows this, but hopes we're too stupid to care, because it would cost them more money to produce.

    I am a bit angry at Sony, I had the Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6-3 G Lens, th OSS in the Lens and the IBIS in the Sony A7RIV/A7RIVA did NOT always work together, so often the images was blurred by the "war" between the two systems, I know many that have tis problem with the R-series Sony Cameras, my local pro-dealer says that Sony know the problem, but they have not acted on it. The same problem occurs with the Zeiss Batis Lenses.

      @@PMRTV Maybe it is only the European batches !? I sold my 200-600, I was tired of the size, the weight and the OSS/IBIS issue. I might get the new 300mm 2.8, but I will wait for many more real world reviews before I decide that. I still wait for Sony to mak a 1.4x and maybe a 2x for the 135mm 1.8 GM, together with a future Sony APSC Camera with the 40 megapixels sensor, that will be a great joy for wildlife photography.
