The children are very normal to help the parents. I grew up that way and really appreciated. My parents priority is our education but when we are not in school we work in the farm. Watching your blogs made me realize how important it is to know the process, though my profession is so irrelevant to nipa production, it will mean so much for me to learn. That will be on my list when given a chance to visit Philippines after 46 years of living in USA. So inspiring & humbling, keep practicing till you earn PhD in Nipa Weaving. I beg to disagree. I used to spend my summer school break in the 90s in Bohol in my grandmothers nipa house. I remember not being able to sleep at night due to extreme heat even with electric fan on.
@Ronald it also depends on the time you went there and also if you're used to living in a house with fan or ac it'll be a bit difficult for you to adjust. I grew up in the province of Bicol, back then our home is with nipa roofing and bamboo and wooden structure, I love the breeze and yes we are not using fan or ac, the wind itself is enough to cool our house.
@@smallville3075 if you live near the sea then you will likely to experience extreme humidity even if you are living in a nipa hut. But if it is in the mountains then nipa hut is appropriate.

Learning the language and the many dialect is difficult my mom is from the Visaya region and my dad the Luzon so you see the struggle I go through. Thank you for giving work for the kids as it surely helps them, being poor in the Philippines is very frustrating that some kids are easily convinced to be little soldiers even though they should never be. A 100 to 200 pesos is big earning for poor kids in the Philippines.
It will be exciting to see you put many nipa huts around your fish pond Kumander Daot where tourists and local people will come and spend their day in your pond and do fishing and cook( ihaw) fish with of course entrance fee. I saw one who retired from abroad and put up a business like that. He had connected bamboo bridges to all the nipa huts making it convenient for tourists to move around. Excited with the progress of your project.

We used to buy nipa early on my childhood especially after strong typhoons because some parts of the roofs would be gone with the wind after. You are blessed to have them naturally grown and abundant too. Also, i admire you for being cool in adopting the Pilipino culture. KD please get yourself a pair or 2 of good rainboots (always have a spare when you're drying off the other one). You will need it every time you walk around the fishpond, as the slippers will always tend to get stuck in the mud and it will break in no time. Do not walk around barefoot or you may catch some parasites. When going into the actual muddy fishpond, you need waterproof fishing waders with boots. It will be a good investment (around $50 at Amazon).

I grew up in a house made with nipa roofing. Under nipa roofing system you don't need electric fan or a/c anymore. Nice content KD.

Thank you for giving work for the kids as it surely helps them, being poor in the Philippines is very frustrating that some kids are easily convinced to be little soldiers even though they should never be. A 100 to 200 pesos is big earning for poor kids in the Philippines.
It will be exciting to see you put many nipa huts around your fish pond Kumander Daot where tourists and local people will come and spend their day in your pond and do fishing and cook( ihaw) fish with of course entrance fee. I saw one who retired from abroad and put up a business like that. He had connected bamboo bridges to all the nipa huts making it convenient for tourists to move around. Excited with the progress of your project.

We used to buy nipa early on my childhood especially after strong typhoons because some parts of the roofs would be gone with the wind after. You are blessed to have them naturally grown and abundant too. Also, i admire you for being cool in adopting the Pilipino culture. You embrace pilipino culture...very simple life in the Philippines...I really miss it....
KD please get yourself a pair or 2 of good rainboots (always have a spare when you're drying off the other one). You will need it every time you walk around the fishpond, as the slippers will always tend to get stuck in the mud and it will break in no time. Do not walk around barefoot or you may catch some parasites. When going into the actual muddy fishpond, you need waterproof fishing waders with boots. It will be a good investment (around $50 at Amazon).

Good content. Never knew how to make one. My dad's ancestral home had these and they'd regularly patch it back then. This is a very valuable survival skill.
