Although it's important to see "proper" technique in instructional videos, it's also refreshing to see a skier learning to improve. In most cases, the audience is probably more at Jacobs level (or lower) and can relate more easily to how he's handling the drills.
Thanks for watching Paul, We've been looking to try out this format for some time now and think that Jacob did a great job exposing some of the pain points when trying out certain drills. ⛷
I loved the zig-zag turns drill and the inside knee lesson. This is the kind of insight that makes a ski lesson worth every penny. Really good stuff and a very good instructor.
Great!!! Please produce more of these! What i would like to see is Benni Walch skiing plus his live-data on CARV: fore-aft during the turn, pressure and the kind.
Benni, great video! I watched this earlier this week the night before my first day on skis this season in Colorado here in the US, and the next morning I practiced your tips and drills. They instantly helped me improve the effectiveness of my short turns and smoothed out some issues I had turning in one direction. Thank you for posting this and your other videos, which I’ll have to watch before my next trip to the mountains!
Hi Lenny 👋 We love this type of feedback and are very happy to hear you could go straight out onto the mountain and put these tips into practice! All the best on your next ski trip ⛷
Very grateful for this lesson, especially on body separation. It was what was missing (or, ok, a major part of what was missing.) Once I practiced it on easier Blues and got muscle memory locked in for this in conjunction with proper pole planting, the change was dramatic in terms of my carving and speed control on harder (steeper) runs.
Thank you. I just got back from skiing in the Canadian Rockies and paid $400 for a three hour lesson on this very subject. I can say I learned more watching this video.
I'm just amazed at what good feedback can do in any athletic movement. Add in some great coaching and simple drills. Massive improvement in such a short time! The Carv tool looks fantastic also...Well done!
@@benniwalch3436 Hi Benny what ski school are you at? I was about to go St.Anton last month but because of covid everything is closed but still have little hope to ski in april at least if it is opened but it doesn't seem to happen probably😂
@@richardbatla hi , at ski school arlberg! Just let me know when you are here. Follow me on FB or Instagram and text me think that’s the easiest way to stay in contact 👍
Enjoyed the lesson and the views which I couldn't see in January 1986 snowstorm with my Arlberg instructor. Keeping shoulders square, quiet prevents the upper twisting. Knees bent with angulation proper stance in the turn, pressuring the downhill ski. I like a wide stance on hard snow, close together in powder. Pole planting maintains rhythm too. Aufwedersain.
Great instruction! Next point for his overall skiing is hand/pole extension to initiate the turn, rather than at the middle of the turn. Follow that up with maintaining the angle from turn initiation to turn completion.
Couldn't agree more! Benni is an INCREDIBLE skier. Awesome he's using longer stiffer skis for his short turns - goes against what most people would do.
Awesome! Thanks for consistent lessons, but also I enjoyed watching, really. I ma in the middle of the sand desert now - And I Want Home!!! To my lovely winter!!!

great vid, love seeing the comparisons. You can see the difference also between them. The student skis from the knees and needs to separate them a little to keep legs parallel. 600+ days and i still learn on every turn.

Excellent! I'm about the same standard as Jacob and this was really useful. Cos see a definite improvement. Would it be fair to say he was also sitting a bit too far back?
Hi Barts, Short turn skiing can be done on a variety of different skis. In this video, Benni does his short turns on GS race skis with a radius of over 20m. Other skiers however might choose to do short turns on more of a slalom ski. With all that said, short turns are certainly possible on a 84mm ski. Perhaps it might be worth trying to get out to a demo ski day to find the ski that feels right for you. Have a good winter ⛷
I’ve been skiing for 25 years and never got the hang of moguls, or smooth off piste skiing style. I’m here to learn how to learn short turns to hopefully transition to these other skills.

Great video. Do you have any tips for those who are afraid of proper edging? Anatomically, does it make people any more vulnerable to trauma, or it's absolutely normal and equally safe use of joints?
I am the one going down the hill saying out loud "separation of upper and lower body!, feel the crunch on the side!, roll the knees towards the hill!!"......and this is why I ski alone...
You have a different skis, for short turn you should use short turn (ST) skis with radius 13-14 m, Jacob have a skii for freeride/deep snow with wide midle part.
Benni, I’ve seen a video of you in bumps displaying a very solid technique with a super steady upper body. Now I must say I am a bit surprised about your super narrow stance, and excess of power in your pole planting here, rather than just a gentle tap / pace making, particularly coming from an Austrian demo.
@@sheltermutts4185 not really. Balance transfer is more of a “consequence” than a “cause” and merely controlled at the foot level more than anything else. You “activate” your foot muscles and bones (toes/metatarsals and heel) to “edge” your skis and transition from one edge to the other. This combined with gravity/speed/centripetal force leads you to a balance transfer between your skis. A narrow stance in reality “flattens” your skis as it prevents you from extreme carving (the reason why you will notice important separation of legs in all racing disciplines (slalom, G, SG). A narrow stance works perfectly for mogul skiing, since you don’t need to carve them as much but instead you want both legs to act like “one piston” in unison, absorbing the terrain underneath you, and also preventing the chance of skis entangling themselves under such a dynamic movement.
@@sheltermutts4185 if one of Marcel Hirscher’s ski boots is touching the other leg’s knee it is precisely because he has a “shoulder width” separation between his legs, wouldn’t you agree? (Instead of a narrow stance). Otherwise both knees would be touching, same with boots and skis and together (due to a narrow stance). But if that cited fact is not proof enough then I am afraid I might not find the right words to make it even more clear.
Did you enjoy watching Jacob try out Benni's tips?
