Deep Purple - Highway Star (1972)

- Early hard rock with Deep Purple live at the Beat Club on 24.06.1972 and in the legendary Mark II line-up with Ian Gillan (v), Ritchie Blackmore (g), Jon Lord (o), Roger Glover (b) and Ian Paice (d).
Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple apply to be the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. Although the band went through many line-up changes - labeled Mark I to IV - the Beat Club performance shows the legendary second line-up with Ian Gillan's howling vocals, Ritchie Blackmore's fast guitar, Jon Lord's organ and the rhythm section of Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums).
Mark II Deep Purple was one of the most devastatingly talented group of musicians to ever share a stage.
Raw AF
Raw and fkn cool 😎
And not to mention the loudest band ever to play on the stage
you know they went down in the world Guinness book of records has been the loudest band on stage they were even considered to play louder than led Zeppelin
@@ronaldwilliams9331 The Who were louder in 1976 at Charlton FC football ground.
When I was 18 I was driving my mom home from work one night. Highway Star came on the radio and I was enjoying it and my mom started screaming "SLOW DOWN!!!" Apparently I was doing over 100.
You were just trying to break the speed of sound
@@tuckedinshirt oooh it's a killing machine, it's got everything
I believe her,
Same but I was doing 60 in a 30 mph zone. A miracle the cops didn't see me.
When I was a kid in 2nd grade I just about ground off my record needle playing “Made In Japan” over and over. Blackmore was a HUGE influence on me to take up the guitar and take lessons. By High School I had over 10,000+ hours of practice and could play any style. Blackmore was my main and very first influence. I loved Rainbow even more than purple although I missed Lord but absolutely loved Dio’s vocals and lyrics. I saw Rainbow live in ‘78 with REO (pre-power ballads) Speedwagon at Kemper Arena. God what a night. Blackmore wailed on Mistreated and Catch the Rainbow and all those classic tunes. He had his analog rig working that night. A 75 Strat, 2 Marshall Majors, the reel-to-reel for echo and saturation….what a night. I’ll never forget it!
The camerawork and the overall production of this video is absolutely superb. I can’t think how they could’ve done it any better. Truly outrageous.
Beat-Club is the greatest music program ever. It brought out the best of so many legendary groups.
Best version ever.
This, is how it’s done
Speeding down the highway
I love this version, So RAW and on FIRE! This has to be one of the earliest renditions of the tune, fresh out of the box, Ian Gillian still finding his way around a final lyric as you can clearly hear him throwing in Steve McQueen Ann Margret and even Mickey Mouse makes an appearance and this badass song! I love it! So Heavy for it's time. The band was untouchable at this time.
Yeah !! Different indeed !!
There is an alternate Take version of this recording. Right here on the channel "Beat Club". The first time I saw this version was around 1991/92 in the extinct MTV Brazil (the true MTV the one that displayed clips !!!!). I also really like Mark III formation with David Coverdale and Glen Hughes.
Better than the album version IMHO.
Ian Gillan's singing is apocalyptic.
To me this is the best recorded version of "Highway Star". Deep Purple at it's peak. Greatest hard rock band ever
It was the Most talented DEEP PURPLE.....The One and Only!!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
no matter what version it is, its phenomenal
The zero-fucks-given version of this song. *Savage* 👍
These guys were tripping hard. Ian's eyes are dilated like crazy! Blackmore took the guitar to another dimension.
This is as bad ass in 2020 as it was in the early 70s.
Late 60's

Germany, thanks for the top notch recordings of the golden age. Special stuff right here.
Deep Purple wouldn't have had so much success without Ian Gillan.
AGREED
And Ritchie Blackmmore and King
Not King, John Lord (organ)
And Roger Glover and Ian Paice....they're all outstanding musicians.
This is the best version. Vocal is amazing!!
is one of the most influential bands in history, the best song👍🌿🌿
Obviously , at the age of eight I had discovered Deep Purple , heard everyone's favorite Smoke on The Water and I was hooked ! For my next birthday , mom asked , " What did I Want for my birthday , but keep it under five dollars " ? I asked for a Deep Purple album ! As , luck would have it , she brought home for me Live in Japan . It took me years to appreciate all of it . As I grew into into the eighties , I would crank this up in my first car . My , 1968 Pontiac GTO with , highway gears . Now , everyone can Understand the power of this song . thank you !
@ Hammerjacks summer 1988, free concert because they were warming up for a European Tour, Mark II. Best Concert for me, 7th All Time Favorite Band.
Crank everything to 10! Awesome.
...my amp is on 11🎸😎
Best version ever..
The best version of this song and its essentially Ian trolling the entire time and its amazing!
Who knew a pilgrim could rock like that!
He sent in over a 1000 Quaker Oats box tops to get that hat.
AWESOME VIDEO! THE BEST DEEP PURPLE VIDEO ON HERE...IMHO!
A favorite! I return to this video again and again. Thank you.
Deep Purple 2.Generation war eine geniale Band

No, but a good band
Steady on
In the conversation, for sure.

Nope, that's Cream.
official anthem of hard rock
I broke a glass bottle while listening to this
Powerful Gillan
Richie Blackmore damn legend , true legend
Nice to see these old times videos! Power to the Purple!!
The real star of the show is Ritchie Blackmore's "witch finder general" hat. Amazing
This song always sounded good live
awesome
Wow... totally different lyrics from the album.
And let's not talk about the guitar solo. Or should I say the not guitar solo?
I bet he just didn’t remember them to be honest
The song was in its infancy at this point. Fabulous demo of what it was going to become.
@@PastelComGini Richie Blackmore here doing his thing is still a million times better than almost all guitarists.
The song had no lyrics at this point just the hook. They wrote this song and sang it in its full form for like the first time here. Thats why he's just putting out random lyrics.
Richies lead break definitely improved over the years 😂 jon lord on fire🔥
Fucking good...the music that bring me to rock/metal many years ago
THE GREAT HARD BLUES ROCK GROUP IN THE WORLD
Deep purple my favorite band ever 💪
One of the best rifi of Rock n' Roll ever!!!
Black Night in '70 kicked off my epic journey! 🤘🎸😎
Esse cara ai das antigas é muito top
Essa versão está horrível,da ate arrepio
@@Urbano202 esta versão é pura, achei incrível a energia dos caras aqui.

Hell Yeah! ....the Best driving song - Ever!
Dá pra se ouvir limpo e bem alto o poder desse vocal ..... Jesus
Richie Blackmore caçador de bruxa. Meu Deus. É. De. Dá arrepios Lan Gillan estava com a voz. Extrema. Extraordinária. Jon lord estava improvisando muito bem com seu órgão
Now that is what you call rock 'n' roll! 👍
Essa banda é fora de série 👍👏🎵🎼🎤🎸
power and soul of rock n roll
thx purple
I need a cigarette...and I don't even smoke!
I need a lie down 😫
Haha.....
Smoking right now ^^
YEAH!! Raw sexy MEN with art oozing outta them in a firehose of talent & passion!!🎸
Now you know why everyone smoked in the 60's LOL
Rock n roll forever
I guess Jon and Ritchie felt more like improvising their solos that day! Pretty rough version all around, must have been filmed early in the morning.
Not to mention Ian and his vocals are pretty off the rails too.
But Roger's bass was spot on, as usual.
Ian is rather disoriented.
Those were the daze...
This is a Rough Draft of the song. The song wasn't recorded yet.
That was the way they rolled ^^
Les meilleurs pour toujours;❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤
Die Helden meiner Jugend. Tolle Zeiten erlebt. Geil
Hervorragend!
I didn't recognize one lyric, but fuck it, that was awesome!
Wow! Fantastic performance of Highway Star. Gillan on steroids. Awesome!
Wow, gillan , la voz.
Great Band!!!!!!!!!
Roger Glover estava. Arrasando com seu baixo
Oh yeah,you are, sir !!!!!!❣️
Rough as a barbed wire suppository- and all the better for it ! 😂 totally gonzo performance !
Gillan supernatural, Fantastic!
So underrated D
Underrated, Deep Purple?
Wish they'd release this version
Reminds me of Patpong 1980s
Красавцы все, как один!
Real Music
Psychedelic sound still alive ‼️‼️ Great⁉️
Super 👏👏🥇
Going by some of the early '70s performances on this show I get the feeling that the guest lounge visit before the gig was an " interesting" experience.......
Driving music, pop it in the 8 track and move on down the road
Wow... this was so ahead to that time. Sounds like a mix of Doors keyboards, punk rock rythm and Kurt Cobain/Tom Morello noise guitar solo.
I think it was kind of dadaist/cathartic performance, just as Nirvana did in early 90s...
So arty and genious!! Vey cool
Don't put Purple and Nirvana in the same phrase, pleeeease. Hahahaha
Doors never used Hammonds.
Nirvana and the whole grunge scene was very important to kick ass of those awful hair rock and poser bands but to me overrated.
@@lesterpaul9657 thats true about Manzarek. I meant that this version reminded me of that psychedelic sound.
And about Nirvana, Dave Grohl thinks just like you, however I find that Nirvana was a groundbreaking band, they killed definitely the 80s sound and cristalized the sound of that new era in rock music
When you're waiting for the solo and it doesn't arrive 😮
Awww que lindo 🤟🏾🤟🏾🖤🖤
Hollywood star
When you're waiting for the solo and it doesn't arrive 😮
Whatcho talking boutique? That's the best solo of this ever recorded.
Zero fucks given. Blackmore at his best. Improv!
Под этот хит хочется газа, газа, газа!!!
Why is it always written that this is a recording of 1972, when it is clearly 1971? Firstly, everyone here has the same clothes, hairstyles and jewelry as on No No No. Even if Gillan wore the same jacket in 1977, and in 1979, and God knows for how long, did the rest of them change clothes after all? Secondly, this is clearly a proto version of the song, and not the one that has been performed for 51 years now.
Can you imagine seeing a band today where each member is so talented?
I got a speeding ticket while driving and listening to this song. In court, I pleased guilty and the Judge asked me if I had anything to say. I told him that my right foot got really heavy every time that I heard "HIghway Star" on the radio when I was driving. The Judged smiled and fined me $200
El cantante natural siempre será Ian 💪
Beat club members deep purple
Chapei escutando
Yessssss! 👍
HELL YES
John Taylor for 80s.
Roger Glover for 70s. Roger is so cool!
I agree with you! I play bass in my rock band Rise 25. Roger Glover’s playing is very influential to me. My bass fills for some particular songs my band makes are influenced by Roger Glover, not to mention I switched to usually playing with a pick because of him as well.
These guys are def on some good stuff! Sounds like shit and I love it!!!! 🤠🤘🏼
❤❤❤
Superb performance although I prefer the one in elsewhere. Thanks I'll subscribe
This is Sonic attackin' Primal Hairy Bastard R&R! Embryonic version of Highway Star before lyrics were finalised & the neo-classical solo bit was added. Witchfinder General's git solo (3:50) is off the Strato-sphere!
Uuuuu, la vi hace 25 años y es lo mismo, demoledora todos ocultando la version original
tune
Thank gawd they re-tooled this wreck for Machine Head.
I would say thats up there with Vanilla Fudge on Ed O'Sullivan
Ian Gillan also did a great job fronting Black Sabbath back when that was happening.
deep purple kixks ass......one of the greatest bands pound for pound.......
Навсегда!!!
You think Richie Blackmore just walked into a shop one day and one of those tall buckle hats was just there?
