  • Rabbi Simcha Hochbaum of Hebron talks about the jealousy of Korach against Moses and the parallel to Cain and Abel. But we can heal the rift.
    --
Shalom my friends, this is Simcha Hochbaum of Hebron. This Shabbat, Parshat Korach, we read about the rebellion of Korach against Moshe and Aharon’s leadership. And there Korach challenges publicly Moshe's authenticity and Moshe appointing his brother Aharon as the leader and as the high priest.
The story of Korach, the Arizal explains, is not a new story. It’s really a continuation of that which happened with Cain and Abel. And just like Cain could not accept that Abel was successful, Cain could not accept that Abel’s sacrifice was accepted, Cain got up and killed his brother.
He tried to, but couldn't be happy with his brother’s lot. He wanted to be in place of his brother. And therefore Cain had to come back to try to fix his mistake through the soul of Korach. And Abel came back into the soul of Moshe Rabeinu.
But this time around, Korach once again couldn't be happy with the lot that God gave him. It wasn't enough to be a leader of the tribe of Kehat. He wanted to be the kohain gadol. He wanted that which wasn't his.
And as a result of that, the ground swallowed up Korach and all his followers and this very unique punishment took place against Korach and his followers.
We all know that Korach was an opportunist. And the Ramban writes that the very second that Moseh Rabeinu wasn't successful and the whole shlichut of the Meraglim didn't succeed, the very moment that so many Jews died in the Kibroth Hattaavah, and that desire for meat, Korach right away sees the opportunity to rise up to people and to try to arouse the people to rebel against Moshe Rabeinu.
We should be able this Shabbat to fix Korach and his rebellion, each and every one of us to be happy with our lot, to look at what that which God gave us as predestined and exactly what we’re supposed to have is what we have, not more not less.
God willing when one can be sameach behelkeinu be happy and rejoice in our own lot, we’ll be able to fix that sin of Korach and wipe out machloket, wipe out the division and really be able to rejoice in that special lot that God gave us.
    Shabbat shalom.

Bless you Rabbi. Thank you for that. I keep hearing about Cain and Abel right now. I spoke about this originating tragedy on Shavuot night as well. Maybe this is what is happening in Israel? We, the descendants of Shem, the replacement of Avel were commanded to go into the land of Cainan to build an altar for a right sacrifice. The descendants of Cain are still trying to kill us. The river of that principle still flows!
