Road Trip on the A.T. -- including a hike from Nantahala Outdoor Center to the top of Wesser Bald, where I camped; and including a hike from Standing Bear Farm and Hostel to the southern end of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where I camped the second night.
People I talked to along the way included Chica and Sunsets; thru-hikers Siddhi and Weatherman; section hikers Dan and Timmy; Ken Reaves (the Discerning Hiker); and others.
Placed I visited: Mountain Crossings; Franklin, North Carolina; the Chica and Sunets Hostel; Nantahala Outdoor Center; Fontana Dam; Cherokee, NC; Clingmans Dome; Gatlinburg, TN; Standing Bear Farm and Hostel; and the Discerning Hiker Hostel in Cosby, TN. I also drove through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

YESSSSS!!!! 100% absolutely hell yes is my vote on the road trip!!! This was super fun to watch and then selfishly of course I’d love to see you up here this summer! And I need someone to tear me away from my work for a few days haha... also nice to see chicka & sunsets and the discerning hiker hostel looks like it’s gonna be awesome too!! Oh and clingmans dome looked... busy. I guess I’m glad we had a rainy white-out kinda day when I was there on the trail. Solid video reverend!!!

You have credible knowledge at a doctorate level of the AT, perhaps a series of the best 3 or 4 day trips for section hikers along the AT. The best memorable views/places of interest.

I really like your videos and I like how give a little history on certain points I can hike no more due to terminal illnesses I live in Georgia I really want to see the Appalachian trail before I pass you make my day with your videos thank you and keep on hiking brother

Highlighting the stops along the trail is very helpful and interesting. Getting a bit more detail on these places adds dimension to the trail as most of what I see are quick snips from hikers on their way through.

I tried to stop in Gatlinburg for lunch but parking was $20. It's a packed tourist town! Instead I kept driving till I got to Cherokee for lunch there. Great video!
Well this is a novel take on the AT. It must feel very different driving instead of hiking. Quicksand is my favorite hiker this year. A whole AT road trip would be awesome.

I did that in 2015, had a blast! Over nighted a lot, shuttled hikers all over the place. I went from Franklin to Woods Hole Hostel in a few weeks. Good memories!

Wow Evan, I did that exact same NOC Weser Bald backpacking trip last September and Fontana to Smokemont on the Benton just this week. Maybe we were in Cherokee at the same time. Very cool to re~see all that again from your viewpoint. Enjoyed the video as usual.
I like how you give tidbits of history and random facts about the locations you visit. I love your ideas of a road trip series. During the covid lockdown, I resorted to hike the AT virtually using the Walk The Distance app. It tracks my steps on my iPhone and let’s me know where I’d be on the AT if I were actually hiking. Do whatever you have to do to keep hiking. Looking forward to your next video.

Such a fun video! I did that section from Franklin to the NOC. I remember the climb down from Wesser Bald was intense. I also had the view. I also road tripped through Cherokee and stopped at Clingman’s Dome. 🥳 I like all your videos. I learn neat things from you. I’m a huge fan of road trips. 👍🏼🥳

I been meaning to tell you , i Through Hiked & completed the Sheltowee in 2019 .
Prior to doing so i had watched your entire hike on that trail !
I had a rough couple of days in the Big South fork and on those days i recalled from your videos you did the same .

This is such a great idea. We wanted to get on the trail more this year but still need shorter trips with the kids. This idea of driving and hiking the AT sounds awesome. Especially grateful for the parking and resupply areas to check out. We will look for more of you AT car hike road trip in the future.

Love your videos Evan. I interviewed a few dozen thru-hikers in 2018 and really need to get that submitted to a journal. The fact that 2021 is the centennial of MacKaye’s AT idea may serve as extra incentive or commemoration. You know, nobody interviews day and section hikers. We should talk. I’ve been thinking about a “cherry-picking the AT” road trip this summer too. I’ve got family in Nashville. Would be great to meet you sometime. Mike Dias from Kennesaw GA or @miked14nature
Great video. I hope you can film a two week roadtrip this summer. I was going to do something similar this spring, down to NC and southern VA (not filming, though). What you really need is a driver, that way you can edit your videos while you are on the move, or rest.
Yes, a driver is a good idea. Unfortunately, I don't have one!
I think your idea is a very good one but you need more like three weeks to cover the distance you mentioned and get in some good hikes. Four weeks would be best, I think. To take a comment from one of your earlier videos, what's your storyline? There are certainly many options. Favorite places, favorite hostels and hikes near them or maybe you could start a continuing series that you add to entitled "Evan on the road along the AT", or something like that. That approach leaves open sub options that focus on the places, the people, places to eat, scenic drives, shorter section hikes, etc. Good luck! I'm looking forward to whatever you come up with.
