  • Geo demonstrates how to make shaving lather from a hard shaving soap in a Shave Nation Lather Bowl. For this demonstration, he uses the New Shave Nation Ebony Copper bowl. The hard soap is The Goodfellas Smile SOLO shaving soap and the brush is the Simpsons T3 Sovereign Synthetic shaving brush. Someone said that Geo has never used a Shave Nation bowl to lather hard soap. Geo takes umbrage to that statement and sets out to prove that it can, will, and should be done to achieve your ultimate Zen-Like shaving experience! Watch and see what you think.

Nice bowls Geo👍👍 They look great, perfect addition to Shave Nation's line up. I've had a copper bowl for some years now, really like how it retains the heat and won't ever break. Good job whipping up that lather, yeah a little water goes a long way but one can get the perfect lather with a little time and effort. Thanks.

Agree. I'm sure I seen a video of you scooping hard soap with your babyspoon into a lather bowl and making terrific later. But nothing wrong with a "refresher course".

Nice vid, Geo! On the harder soaps, I like to flatten them out with my thumb before applying the brush. Spreads the soap more evenly in the bowl and the heat softens it up a bit. No clue whether it's "better" or not; not the point. As always, it's "whatever works for you". The bowls are beautiful, especially that one with the dark accents! Cheerio. ~Dave

Same way here! If soap is still too hard for scooping, slicing with a knife will work, that is, as long as the soap main puck or bar is not stuck in its own packaging.

Hi Geo, have you reviewed Barbarossa Brothers “Ottoman” razor? Someone bought me one for Christmas and I love the weight and the stubby handle but, I cut myself almost to shreds with Feather blades and almost as bad with Astras. I am trying to find out if it is uber aggressive or if it needs a change in technique. Many thanks.

I've been shaving using razors and brushes for many years, but no matter what brush ,soap or process I use, I could never obtain that creamy thick foam. It is always just enough for shaving, so I shrug it off. I think I'm cursed with feeble foam.

Nice try. The bumpy bowl Geo. I said we noticed you always use creams in the "Bumpy" bowls. Never see you use harder soaps in the "Bumpy" bowl. That is because the "Bumpy" bowl is better suited for shaving creams is why. But a guy could load the brush from the container then build lather in your "Bumpy" bowl. Wish I would of thought of that before I canceled my order. Yes I can lather like you did in this video in my Capts. Choice copper bowl, Fine Accoutrements bowl, my CaYuen Workshop bowl, and even a smooth glass Pyrex bowl. Stay safe up there! -Everett

FYI-Williams has been discontinued for a few years. And-it makes no sense to break off a piece of hard soap to mix it in a lather bowl. Just load the tips and face lather or go to a bowl and swirl for vast amounts of lather.

Sometimes I use a definitely hard, physically hard soap. It is Pears Transparent Soap. No blooming! No load from the bar/puck! I use a knife to scrape peices from it and firmly flatten onto the bottom of my shave-lathering bowl.
