I have been sanding for 35 years.... And I kind of like it.... Maybe because everyone hates it... Automotive restoration has been pretty good to me.... Confessions of a professional sander.

Outstanding job, very well done! I handmade a few object from ebony wood without any machinery and I know how hard sanding is. It takes a lot of strength and stamina to do this precisely over weeks and months. I have a lot of respect for people, who do their work with such devotion.

Jerry, beautiful work ,as always and artistry in both sound and aesthetics.
And now, it's time for you to build one for yourself. Whether or not we see it doesn't matter.
Don't let that window close. It will always close faster than you want it to.
Merry Christmas to Mr. and Mrs. Rosa, Caleb, Melissa, and all the families around you.

As always... What a pleasure it is for us to watch a Master Craftsman (Artist...) create a work of art! It kinda blurs the line between Art and Science. A guy concerned about the Truth really; leaving the mistakes in the video; not compromising the process of creating an "imperfect" instrument. Hey, a one thousandth mistake is impossible to find, so in some respects... It is perfect! Thanks Jerry!
    "Thousands of years later." LOL

Years ago I used to be a trim carpenter and I would do fancy trim and install very expensive panels of fine woods on wall then trim them out. Here is a simple trick we used to avoid splitting wood when driving in finish nails: turn the nail with the point up and the nail head against any solid surface. Next tap the point on the nail using your hammer using only enough force to blunt the nail's point but not so much force that the nail bends. Now the nail will easily drive into wood acting as a punch rather than as a wedge like a sharply pointed nail. Use this trick when driving those two finish nails into the neck before installing the fret board.
To really a oid splitting the wood and to make thin finish nails drive into hard wood without splitting we kept a bar of Ivory Soap in a pouch of our nail aprons so we could rub the nails against the bar of soap to lubricate them before driving them into very hard, very expensive woods.
One last tip I use when I paint landscape on site (Plein air painting). Use your pocket knife to cut two bars of Ivory Soap (only use this brand because of it's lye content and oils) into small shavings. Put the shavings into a fair size jar then add enough water to cover all the soap shaving by about an inch of water. Put the lid on the jar, give the jar a few good hard shakes then let the jar sit for a few days. The soap will resolve into a thick slurry that's about as viscous as cake icing., Pour off any excess water then use a stick, spoon, or paint brush handle to mix the slurry up so it's consistency is even.
You now have the very best brush cleaning method on earth. Lightly jab each brush into the slurry to get soap all up in the bristles. Even a brush that was forgotten and paint has dried in the bristles and they seem to be a big gob of a ruined brush... Not at all. Punch that brush into the slurry and allow it to stay in the soap for 2 or 3 weeks. The brunch will be like new or at least much improved but in need of more soaking in the soap time.
Hope this helps. I enjoy your videos.

Hoping the arthritis gets better. It would be a tragedy to have you forced into stopping building the beautiful instruments I've seen. My only regret is I didn't find you years earlier than I did. A true artist when it comes to building stringed instruments. Note: I just got a ES335 copy for $170 New. I did some rudimentary set up work on it, it sounds better than I hoped it would. Still have a slight buzz at the 16th fret, but I'm gradually taking it down. You've taught me much, in such a short space of time. I want to say thank you, for sharing your talents & knowledge. Many blessings to you & Caleb & the family.

I've really enjoyed watching you build this mandolin. A few years ago the pain in my fingers was so bad I couldn't strum my guitar, but my daughter's father-in-law, an Australian farmer, suggested I take GOPO, a Danish supplement made from rose hips and I have never looked back. Even if the supplement doesn't work for you (you'll know after about a month) at least you'll have had plenty of vitamin C. If you can get it in the USA, give it a try - my fingers feel the way they did when I was 20 (I'm 66). Merry Christmas, Jerry, from the UK.
