I love the commentators, brings back memory's, they make the build up special with their knowledge. It's lovely to see people enjoying the racing in normal clothes, not like the fashion show today!!!
I remember West Tip falling in the 85 National and I followed him in every race he ran in after that. Even when he was 13 running in hunter chase'. 86 was my first ever bet (put on by my Dad as I was 10 years old!). For me, he's the best National horse after Red Rum.
Great ride from Richard Dunwoody, always travelling very well on West Tip. The Tsarevich was always a favourite of mine, he was essentially a 2 1/2 miler who didn't quite see out the National trip. He weakened markedly from the last but in all fairness a lot of use was made of him and connections learnt from this as he went on to finish runner up the following year to Maori Venture under a more restraining ride. Great upload...:-)
Aye. I just listened to this in 2020 and was blown away by how many of the horses I remembered, including The Tsaerevitch. Loved those days. Was at this National and had West Tip. At the Grittar National I backed Grittar. I lost in the other one I went to, but can't remember which one it was. We paid for the cheap seats and then ran onto the course and all the way down by the finish line. Scallies lol.
I was 10 in 1986 and remember listening to this race on the radio (I was at a football match!) - I was fascinated by how a horse such as Doubleuagain who was such a long price (500/1 I think) could be leading for so long! They seemed to go down to Bechers at a serious clip in this race!
Great memories, I backed West Tip in his National appearances so this is always a pleasure to revisit. Has there ever been another National with as many winners lining up ??
So many other Grand National winners and familiar, famous names,I couldn't believe how many when I saw that line-up. West Tip was the second time I backed the winner after Red Rum in 1974. I have a track record of backing the winner once every 10/11/12 years.
A Beautiful Horse indeed. What a fantastic race it was with great commentary. I so wish the BBC would do the coverage again and the jockey club stop messing about with the course and rules.
I was 12 and a half and had been gutted when it fell at bechers the year before but knew he would win when he jumped it this time. Dunwoody was by far the best jockey of his generation.
Becher's Brook used to be notorious and a hazard - the changes made it much safer now. The brook had been drained dry long before this, and levelling the side-to-side slope on the landing side and eliminating the drop,or some of it,accomplished the task - before the latter was done at least one jockey described it as "jumping off the edge of the world". It's one of the tallest fences as well, but not one of the wiest like the open ditches such as fence number 3 (or 19).
5 National winners - past and present ran in this race. It was a good national field with 106 initial entries and the last horse in Mount Oliver, a decent handicapper. Why Forget was unlucky to survive that nasty incident c 18.40
What was the name of the horse carrying the colours of Aberleigh House; the winner in 2004? It was no. 28. I spotted it as they were walking round before the startThecolours are navy blue with red and white striped sleeves and cap
Interesting to see Cheveley Park having both their runners run big races, surprised they didn't continue having N.H. runners after that. Terry Ramsden was probably wishing it was a 5 mile race the way Mr. Snugfit finished after the last.
The course was imposing and the BBC coverage professional. Better era indeed. Not a Chapman in sight to ruin the afternoon. Nor the race being downgraded to a 4m 3f cross country affair.
One of my favourite horses of all time Very geninue ,very strong , very brave , very honest that's WEST TIP !!!!!!! ⭐️

The one and only Peter O'Sullevan included.
@@rjjcms1 Still say the BBC were the very best at commentating on the National.

Even being the youngest jockey then R.Dunwoody was stylish then.....it was him & this horse who got me into NH...[still am]!!!

It's as fresh watching it now as ever . I was nearly on my feet lol . Cheers pal : )

yes we backed double you again I was 11 ,what great fun the national was at the time
Loved West Tip. Followed him for years
kevin coollins LVE
not often you see one winning the National with ears pricked , masterful ride from Dunwoody , THE perfect ride he gave it
Beautiful brave horse ..loved him.

my first..... and only winner. My brother had Young Driver so that was one in his eye!

Great winner but what a run from young driver
One of the Best Nationals , imho

Double you again was 500/1 I was 11 at the time how the national was fun at the time, I remember I asked my
dad to back it for me.
I LOVE YOU WEST TIP my first ever bet and win
The winner was one of the GN runners placing most times in the race's history (4 times: 1st 1986, 4th 1987 and 1988, 2nd 1989).
Very nearly won it for the second time in 1989
Hallo Dandy what a great stamp of a chaser he was. West Tip a little warrier they don't make them like this anymore
Warrior...Warrier ?? 🤣🤣🤣
@@markperryman1797 Marchog!
...no frills...no gimmicks from the BBC racing team......just thoughtful analysis of the runners.......and not a Clare Balding in sight.....
what a terrible fence bechers was, just look at all those fallers

Backed it happy memories
I backed the winner it was a great horse.
Love the funny pronunciation of the Czech rider's name.
hi any other extended footage of the nationals.was great seeing the build up.thanks.
Perfect apart from I'd have liked a few minutes of the aftermath instead of it cut off so suddenly like that at the end.
5 National winners - past and present ran in this race. It was a good national field with 106 initial entries and the last horse in Mount Oliver, a decent handicapper. Why Forget was unlucky to survive that nasty incident c 18.40
My first ever bet! ( And win) 😊
Yeah you couldn't beat the BBC coverage n their commentators , don't know why they stopped their excellent programmes 🙁
What was the name of the horse carrying the colours of Aberleigh House; the winner in 2004? It was no. 28. I spotted it as they were walking round before the startThecolours are navy blue with red and white striped sleeves and cap
The horse is called Dudie,he fell twice, once at the 3rd remounted and then at the 6th (Bechers Brook).
Interesting to see Cheveley Park having both their runners run big races, surprised they didn't continue having N.H. runners after that. Terry Ramsden was probably wishing it was a 5 mile race the way Mr. Snugfit finished after the last.
Is there a full race of 2016 anywhere? Only one I can find is in french :P
..poor old Dudie had no chance of clearing Bechers once Julian Wilson had called them all safely over.......
Pity he couldn't win again in 1989 but the weight scuppered him I think. A proper jumper was West Tip.
Where did Mr Snugfit come from?
It was said that Mr Snugfit was backed heavily by the ladies!
When national was a proper race with testing fenchers
Tough as teak , he pricked his ears 2 out , what a horse
What was the number of the horse that won?
8
i won 200 quid that day with my dad
Proper money back then
