It's honestly so outrageous that, at the Olympics, the supposed "pinnacle" of sports, the best lifters are unable to attend due to ridiculous restrictions imposed on them. Why have they never done this with other sports such as swimming, where a single athlete can win 5+ gold medals? Realistically, countries should be able to send a lifter per category, it really is appalling that a world champion like Tian Tao wasn't able to compete at the Olympics due to the spots already being taken up. It goes to show that a world championship medal in weightlifting carries far more weight than an Olympic one, with its artificial pool of athletes.
Davidip you make excellent points. The severe restrictions imposed on weightlifting in the number of categories and the number of lifters are is the penalty designated by the IOC for the lax drug testing standards by the IWF for a number of years. Of course there are other sports that have athletes using peds but IOC deems our sport the worst offender. Remember the IWF had to scramble just to get weightlifting back in for 2028.
You are correct, I'm much more hyped for World's each year than the Olympics just because of it's longer lineup and the crowd do be going wild sometimes
Yeah and weightlifting is on that line of potentially being removed from the Olympic roster if the drug problems continue
But how would some other countries win or even compete if they allow the best to come to Olympics? China winning at Olympic weightlifting is high % in the lower bodyweight so if they allow the best in then these other countries can't win or even be on the platform
@@johndoherty-hh2ckI didn't know that. Was it announced publicly by the IOC that weightlifting categories would be scaled back because of poor supervision/corruption?
More excited for this than the Olympics
Because this is the Olympics

Immense production quality again from the WH boys.
Tian's strength level is back to that in his 85kg heydays (300kg back squat for reps). That's more than enough to c&j 225kg+ for an 89kg. Hopefully his shoulder recovers well, and he will make it to the Olympics🙏

Not really, half of the best athletes can't go because of the stupid restrictions on how many athletes can be sent per country.

Karlos may just weigh in, but may depend on Shi’s performance in the 73s. If Shi does poorly, they may hold Karlos back. If he’s in good shape, is it worth it to let him go ham if Shi outlifts Rahmat somehow, to discourage China from sending a 89? Either way, Tian and Li will be going for big totals to outdo each other I reckon. Tian’s last chance at an Olympics and Li is still number one ranked and doesn’t want to be held back.

1. Li (CHN) 396kg
2. Nasar (BUL) 395kg

If they were all there and it's the Olympics, I'd be stoked, but for the last qualifier before the Olympics, not so much. Lot of them will be lifting low effort and some will just weigh in if they're already qualified. Olympics are 4 months from this; nobody should be peaked or risking injury with max attempts to win. Tian Tao's not going to risk blowing out his shoulder; that's for sure. Karlos is young and aggressive so he may not contain himself (it's the coach's job to contain him) but if he tried for a WR and ended up reinjuring his achilles, it will be the mistake of his life.
TBF Karlos Nasar has put in only a 370 total for the cup (note this is based on preliminary entries). I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to peak for Europeans in his home country and not for the World cup. He definitely doesn't need to make a total and I wouldn't be surprised if he just weighs in.
As for Tian Tao he has said in an interview with Torokhity Media that if he doesn't win at the world cup he will "become a fisherman". Most likely if he doesn't go big and win, he may just retire entirely.
Tian and lot of others have no option but to put up huge numbers here if they want to be selected by their country or beat another lifter of the same nation in their weight class.
IMO there has been a lot of events near each other this Olympic quad. This years PanAms, Euro, Asian Championships where only like a month before the World Cup.
It depends on how the coaching staff of each team wants to play it. It’s likely for Li and Tian to put on a show as Li would want to show China that he’s a better pick over Shi and Tian would look to take Li’s place. If Karlos puts on a good performance (like trying to take his WR total back) and beats the two Chinese lifters, he’s showing China that they shouldn’t send an 89 and therefore he basically has no competition at the Olympics and will take an easy gold. There’s a lot more at stake in this competition than you think. I doubt any of the top lifters will be lifting low effort. Or I could be wrong and maybe China has already decided who they’re sending to the Olympics and they won’t bother going heavy. But I highly doubt that.
Nassar’s new total on final start list is 390. All the big guns have put in legitimate totals. A session 11guys 381 minimum. Lookout!
@@johndoherty-hh2ck thanks for letting me know, definitely throws my theory out the window. Looking at it Yeison Lopez entered in a 395kg total crazy.
Serious the funny thing is Lopez can probably coast he’s already pretty safe with 390. He doesn’t have to go mad dog crazy.
Carlos ruLzZzZzzz… BUL POWER 💥 💥 🇧🇬

Hope everyone stays healthy. Thailand will be glorious!
Don't forget Jeison López!! What a battle
I'll going with Karlos. Seb when are you going to give your predictions? I'll so glad l am retired so no matter what time it comes on in the USA I can watch.
The number one question I have is how healthy is Tian’s shoulder. It was killing him late last year. If you put his best two lifts together from last year he out totals everyone. He was a light 96 when he snatched 180. This guy’s clutch if he’s healthy. He can respond in the clutch. Remember Rio Olympics he missed first two attempts each lift but made both third lifts and finished with silver.
What's you guys thoughts on not the top ten athletes in a class not being there?
I know youve probably spoken about it before but should a guy miss out on the Olympics if hes top five, just because you can only take so many lifters?
Li definitely has total 400kg in his pocket ! Both Li and Tian r 400 total level~
What an exciting weight class @89kg
KARLOOOSSS KARLOOOOSSSS KARLOOOOSSS KARLOOOSSS KARLOOOSSS BULGARIAAANNN POWEEERRR!!! NO ONE CAN STOP THIS MAN NO ONEEE!!!!!
Are weightlifters only able to secure their olympic qualification at the last event before the games? Like waterpolo teams or handball teams have multiple opportunities to do so, for example european championship or world cup, but it doesn't have to be the last before the Olympics
They have in total 7 opportunities to make a total to put them in the top ten. This is the last one. If you aren't in the top 10 after this event you aren't going to the Olympics. Everyone is going to go big to ensure their spot at the Olympics.
Depending on the class if you are ranked 7-10th you probably want to go total big in order to secure your spot. Those who sit above could probably chance it.
For example Lesman Peredes is currently 6th in the 102s and hasn't competed since worlds in 2022. Others aren't so lucky.
SomeSerious Lesman in the 102s is my big question mark. His 397 was done at 96 (400 in 2021 as well). I’m dying to know how much the additional bodyweight helps him. I don’t believe he has even competed at 102 in the last 2 years internationally.
@@johndoherty-hh2ck I know he snatched 187kg as a 96, I don't think their is a single 102 who has done that this Olympic quad. I feel we could see at least a 195kg snatch from him.
@@SomeSeriousWeight oh I see, thanks for the information! and how is it decided how many lifters each country can send to the Olympics?
@@balubaluhehe2002 Countries can only send 3 men and 3 women, all of whom have to compete in different weight classes. If two lifters from the same country place in the top ten of a weight class only the higher ranked one will qualify.
If a country has more than 3 men and 3 women in different weight classes who are qualified (IE China) , they can choose who to send. Though they would probably want to send the ones who have the greatest chance of getting a medal.

Karlos' is a legend in the making. Time will reveal the inevitable.
Going to be a great battle nontheless.
I’d love to see Arley making a total that puts him within the top 10. Can he still qualify to Paris?

Nino didn’t make 222 look easier while passing out than Karlos did when Karlos jerked it bro. Lmao. Speed on the squat isn’t something to brag about when you miss the jerk.
The squat being "easy" simply suggested that he had more energy left for the jerk. Nino looked like he was starting to pass out after the clean despite it looking comfortable. Perhaps he's made the weight in training before.
@@selenahong no shot. Clean is unrelated to completing the jerk. I find it insane to say he cleaned it better than Karlos ever has when the event is CJ. It’s irrelevant the quality of the clean. And for Nino as “good” as the clean may have looked, he’s gunna have to clean it wayyyyy better with way more in the tank to be able to jerk it.
You are 100% correct Mano. It is a two part lift.
Li ❤
Seems to me like this world champs has more at stake for the Chinese lifters than for Karlos. Sure, he won't want to lose, but the Chinese guys are fighting it out for an Olympic spot, and whichever one wins probably has to also beat Karlos to be confident of his place, but Karlos has his Olympic spot guaranteed. No way Bulgaria wouldn't send him.

They will never equal or even match Blagoev's 195.5 snatch. Changing the classes from 90 to 91 to 89 is a cheap deceptive move to say someone else has a new WR. They will not equal zlatev nor Vardanian till someone is genetically engineered, two 90 lifters did 235 CJ, they will never equal those lifts. They need to try, but their chances are not much better than mine, regardless that they are immeasurably closer. Same for the old 75 class, best snatch of 77 was Sagir with 172.5 looked like a warm up.
True they are still a bit off 82.5kg Zlatev who did 183 snatch and 225 C&J, 38 years ago.
With out of competition drug testing, the sport is not the same. Yes Blagoev lifted more in his time but if transported to 2024 he would lift less under these conditions. How much less we do not know but like I said, the sport is not the same.
