Ok… I’m going to be extra harsh here in my assessment with my favorite Corp only because I love them and they deserve it. I know it’s early in the season. But…
What the fuck happened to my Cavies? I don’t remember them ever being this fucking bad early on in the season and sounding and looking like an amateur B corp.
The first half of the show is a clusterfuck of loud notes and chord progressions that r harder to follow than a botched up horror movie.
What were the brass book writers going for? A fucked up horror story? I literally couldn’t follow any of the chord progressions and I’m a pretty well versed multi instrumentalist musician. I marched tenors in the battery. I grew up being a band kid through middle and high school. The only part of the show I could audibly follow was the jazz ballad. Everything before and after it was such a mess that u could put a screamo track next to it and the brass book would make less sense.
The drill…. Completely unimaginative. They’ve resorted to being a worser version of BD in terms of drill of DCI. Where is the green machine that I remember from the early 2000s that reinvented what cool and clean drill writing was?
The only semi bright spots were the battery and the uniforms.
I’m really disappointed with the direction my favorite Corp has been going down the last few years and it really reflects on their scores and placement. At this rate they will place even lower then they did last year.
Am I wrong here? Am I being too harsh here? Someone’s please reassure me that this show will be good enough by the end of the season to place anywhere in the top ten! It seems like they continue to slide further down in terms of their ranking every year.

Have you ever listened to cadets 91? Do it. Took me some time, but the music is as dissonant as this. And I love every minute of it.

I think that's maybe too harsh, yeah. It's an understandable sentiment from a dedicated fan of the corps, but probably a bit too harsh. It's certainly fair to say the hornline has a lot of work in front of them though. The brass book definitely won this round haha.
This show, to my eyes at least, has tremendous potential. The opening is hard to follow by design I think, as they are attempting to convey a sense of turmoil and confusion. The drill, then is also cluttered and frantic by design. I do wonder if the staging of the props makes it a bit too cluttered, especially towards the end of the show. Will be interesting to see if they play around with that. The soloists...you know what, we can discuss the soloists another time ;)
I haven't been able to see a show in Indy/late season since 2018 or so, but I always get to see early shows in late june/early july, and this definitely happens to all corps where they come out and don't have a great night, or they present a product that looks "unpolished". This production was certainly lacking polish, but I suspect in about 3-4 weeks this show is really going to hit it's stride. Time will tell.
When it comes to the cavaliers, we need to understand that it's been 15+ years now since the days of Frameworks, Bond, and Machine. That style of production has long been dead and the activity has evolved to embrace new styles. This corps hasn't lost it's identity...their identity has changed. If the Cavies are ever to rise back to the top as they were 20 years ago, they need to be allowed to explore, experiment, and extrapolate on their current identity, and this show, to me, gives indicators they are doing just that. I admit I was concerned by their production last year, for reasons I won't go into, but this show seems to have them back on Track (teehee) from where they left off in 2019.

You’re NOT wrong. This show is a clusterf*ck of the highest order. From the non-value added props that morph into creepy faces to the mishmash of really bad horn playing, awful drill, and a mediocre battery. I didn’t pay attention to the guard and pit because the rest was so bad. The design is simply AWFUL! I think they’re trying to be bad so that they have to go the route of the FORMER Madison Scouts and let in girls.

Incorrect equipment. He needs a mouthpiece with a narrow rim. If your high notes slide and do not slot that’s how you know.

@@lonniei1606 no one said it wasn't hard to make..... but Cavies aren't the only corps to lose identity in my eyes.
Actually I think it may be harder now than before, cause visually the demand isn't quite there as much so musical demands have greatly increased.
And growing up, and through my years of marching Cavies were always reliable for some insane drill, clean crisp formations.....intricate patterns....etc.
The 2021 show was a perfect blend of old and new school though, I loved it...... wish they had stayed on that route, but yeah it's nothing to slight the members. They only perform, they don't (in most cases) design the show......I was a marching member in the early 2000s so I know the work involved but the activity as a whole has kind of lost its appeal in some ways.
