for real!! like i get the premise being "blind guy" but the idea is that we discover the person behind the disability through the interview and he really didn't pull through on that part enough and kinda stayed in the former which felt pretty belittling tbh :/
fully blind people wouldn’t be able to see in their dreams it would mostly be sound the same way when they close their eyes there’s nothing when ppl who can see close their eyes there’s darkness
Unsolicited feedback as a fan of the show - this one left a bit to be desired. Jugpreet is such a charming dude and I think there was so much potential for this episode! (Maybe an extended cut could happen?) I think it would be good to try and ask more open questions that aren’t leading, and let people finish their sentences and stories. Sometimes you have to go with the flow for these things and let go of structure, which I acknowledge can be hard when you want to ensure the content is still entertaining. Also, perhaps a bit of self-education on how to interview people (esp people who belong to minority groups) in a way that lets them share their stories and experiences in a way that’s valuable to them, not just in a way that makes sense to _you_ . Part of this process requires you to not just recognise the presumptions you have about things but to think about where the presumptions came from. The extra self-awareness can make a huge difference. Also, don’t be afraid of “wording things wrong” - you can always correct yourself. SBSK does a pretty good job at this for reference. Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy also come to mind. I’m a postgrad psych student who is personally a huge fan of NT. It’s an interviewing and counselling technique based on facilitating rich storytelling and conversation. All these examples are mostly designed for counsellors etc but they’re all generally relevant for making good conversation and learning about people ❤️
I feel like it's good to have questions written down for when the natural flow of the convo stops, but normally new questions are formed as you learn about the person being interviewed. He brought up his spirituality and his relationship with music and I would have loved to have heard more about that. It's cool to have silly questions like what if you had a service elephant, but not if it's to cut off a genuine discussion. It's uncomfortable watching him genuinely trying to share his life when the interveiwer is making jokes while he's trying to talk. If you want to take the silly route, that's okay! But tell the person being interviewed that, because I'm not sure he knew.
he has such a calming aura, and I think there really is a beauty in having the ability not to judge by appearance but by the heart only. I can see it has impacted his character in a positive way and enhanced his music skills, which is why I definitely see why he identifies more with the term "differently abled"
hey derek i usually really like your videos but i think you need to do some more learning on how to properly interview people with disabilities ! a lot of this interview in particular felt like you were just asking questions you had written down and then weren’t really listening to any of his responses esp when u cut him off when he was trying to talk about music.
Came here because I heard you talk about it in your last video and I just wanted to say you did good, ofcourse there are things that couldve gone diffrent but interviewing can be difficult sometimes. Don't beat yourself up about it. Keep having fun and no worries!
Music is actually incredibly important for blind people. There was a science museum that did an exhibit for blind people to touch this metal bar that did a 📈📉in the pattern of a whale diving as musicians played sounds on cellos to mimic a humpback whale diving so they could experience what it would be like to be a whale diving and it was absolutely incredible. Blew my mind
Jugpreet seems so nice to talk to and full of positivity in regards to being blind.. i think its so much more important to embrace the differences in perspective that come with it rather than what he "wishes" he had or wanted if he weren't blind bc he himself took the step of indulging in interests/hobbies like music that *don't* require sight. Seems as though too often people who are differently-abled, instead of being appreciated for how they adapt to their divergence from the norm, are just seen as another group of people to be fixed.. I notice this especially when cures or wishful thinking are mentioned.. why do you assume a blind person needs to be cured so bad if they are comfortable in their life as a blind person?
Loved this ep! Jugpreet is so sincere and has such a great vibe…reminds me of your first interview with Ben, another gem of a human. The part that really blew my mind was blindness = being beyond the duality of light and dark. He doesn’t see darkness, it’s just nothing 🤯
This guy seems so sweet & genuine. My late aunt was blind from birth and I miss her every single day. Decided to switch career paths and work with the blind 🖤 Loved this episode & how you just ask every guest regular & fun questions. Would love to have another episode! :)
I’d like to assume he probably didn’t know about their shady practices and controversies. I almost did a BetterHelp sponsorship like had the paperwork signed and everything and found out last minute. On paper the company sounds amazing
@@Michelle-ws4bx Of course it's planned. It's just a visual gag for the viewers since his guest wouldn't notice but we would. Why do you think it was in there? Lmao

If you guys want to see how a blind person sees.. Close one of your eyes, and that's what they experience! What you see through your closed eye is seeing "nothing".
@@princessmeow4922 Comparing a blind persons experience to a seeing person with their eyes closed is very misleading and inaccurate. Blindness varies. Some people still see some very very blurry figures or movement of light. And some people have complete blindness where they don’t see anything including light. If a seeing person has their eyes closed in a room and someone turns the lights on and off. They will notice the difference in light even with their eyes closed. A completely blind person won’t.
The thing/problem with Derek is that he doesn’t engage in a conversation beyond his prepared questions. Like there is never a “fluid” conversation. The episodes are unbalanced too much what Derek has to say/ask too little about the Guest. Don’t get me wrong, I like he’s funny and brings something different to the interviews, and I know being an interviewer is hard af, but if he could practice and incorporate some balance these interviews would be 10x better
that's why to me the best episodes are always the ones with someone he already knew before hand, they sound like a real conversation. The fact is i thought he had that balance you are speaking about, but i feel like it changed just after the episode with Julie Vu (which was great), it's like he tried to change the formula a bit but he lost parts of what made the show interesting in the process
