While I agree with a lot, there’s some pretty not hard to find lyrical mistakes he made. Especially on Redecorate. It’s not a metaphor for our rooms and how we collect trauma. It’s actually probably the most literal song on this record. It’s about people who are suicidal and some of there lost thoughts before taking there life being “should I at least clean my room so they have less worry when i’m gone”.

@@tortino56 Yeah, it’s pretty contradicting when an easily made album can be the least liked album from everyone else while the ones you worked too hard on could be your best.

Same. SAI to me is honestly as good as Trench, (really only difference is SAI is shorter) Lyrically it's consistent with the other albums but it's pretty different in comparison so different in sound but still sounds like something what TOP would make. Definitely think Fantano missed the mark here.

@@faberquidam so what
YES LITERALLY
It’s key to know Fantano’s baseline, which TØP record he actually likes already. I’ve been listening to the band for ten years and every new album has an adjustment phase for me because they are so different. In the Zane Lowe interview Tyler states he often swings far in the opposite direction of the previous record when writing a new one. Trench is their most complex work, and they labored over it a ton. Which paid off, and it is their best work overall. But he also said his songwriting starts out much more on the clean, simple, poppy, and then he twists it into something different. He said SAI was definitely less laborious and he wanted to sonically contrast from the recent trend of pop getting a lot darker. SAI is definitely a grower, but still competent and undeniably catchy. Those in the Clique have plenty to uncover and love too, and creating the world and lore is Tyler’s favorite thing to do.
Well said
God I love this comment. Literally could not have said it better
@@JimboJJ41 taking your question in good faith, I can tell you from experience that art is never perfected, and finished is merely deciding where to stop. When we view Tyler’s comments (new and old) in this light, he decided to stop on the poppier lighter side last time and now in turn, Clancy is much moodier and darker-maybe even overcompensating (I had to say it). I could chalk SAI up to a convenient lore coincidence if I wanted, but three years later those songs still make me smile and sing along. And if we’re being honest, voices like Fantano and Brad Taste are just as guilty of holding the gun at the end of The Craving (singe version music video)

Regarding “Never Take It”, he didn’t specify who he was directing the message to, and the idea of educating yourself but never too much could just as easily apply to conspiracy theorists as it does to people being manipulated by the media corporations.
exactly, fantano can be so clueless sometimes
Yeah. I see the message of that song as being, “You should care about politics and everything that’s happening in the world but you shouldn’t use that as a vehicle to hate people you disagree with instead of trying to find solutions.”
Sure, it has the aesthetics of a political protest song but it’s only vague if you choose to interpret it as him taking a stance which it clearly isn’t. He’s speaking very generally to the unhealthy points of view people fall into all over the political spectrum. I don’t have a problem with Anthony not liking a song for political reasons but I really think his criticism for this song is very weak and surface level. This album is by no means a masterpiece and even though every review is just his opinion, it didn’t seem like there was a lot in this video to separate it from some random person’s uninformed opinion.
@@mabeylane7163 exactly
Its a nonpartisan stance, theyre saying stop letting the media and politics and the narratives divide us since the division weakens us as a whole. Anthony is just too much of a leftist to see the real message
fyi Redecorate actually came about because a friend of Tyler's had a son pass away and they kept his room exactly the same as it was when he died. It's about suicide and not wanting to leave your family and friends to pick up the pieces and miss you.

I know it sounds so cliche to say that but I really feel like Fantano didn’t really understand most of the songs or interpreted them in the least charitable possible way. Feels like he didn’t even give the album a chance just because it isn’t Trench The Sequel.
Yeah his take on Never Take It is a dead ringer that he's misunderstanding the meaning and making negative assumptions.
He really really expected a Trench pt.2 when
- TOP has never done the same style two albums in a row before, even when they repeated songs from RAB in vessel, it still felt different and more well realized
- Trench was made in the period of one and a half year, in extremely isolated conditions, with only 4 people having any input on the album before it was complete: Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, Paul Meany who is the Co-Producer, and the person who Mixed and Mastered the album.
Tyler said the next chapter is coming still, and this is an interlude/filler album. It's not the follow up to Trench and not supposed to be. It was made for a time of quarentine, when having dark songs can be really dangerous to your mental health. As someone highly sensible about mental health and about depression, Tyler deliberately chose to make an album that is less tour friendly, less insightful and more cheerful and bouncy.
That said, as a long time fan of tøp, I really do feel a lot of the same things
I'll chime in as someone who def isn't a top fan, my girlfriend is so I usually listen to their new stuff as it comes out. After trench this literally sounds like they're 14 years old with no grasp of creativity or production. Like holy shit, how??
like someone else commented, it’s supposed to be bad. In the lore Clancy, the protagonist in Trench is dead and dema’s captured Tyler and Josh and are making them produce propaganda for dema. So mulberry st. can be interpreted as someone’s intrusive thoughts trying to talk them out of taking their antidepressants etc. and never take it can apply to q anon shit but from the propagandists’ perspective. That being said the album is bad. Musically and lyrically weaker than tøp’s older stuff. As a longtime fan I like that they care about world building and that they’re supposedly producing this record against their will but that doesn’t excuse the quality of the music.
I wasn't surprised to see that Anthony didn't enjoy the album. Personally as a twenty one pilots fan, who loves nearly all the songs they have released, I was disappointing by this album. I would personally give it a solid 6/10. I enjoyed all of the songs, but none felt great to me. It overall didn't amaze me like Trench, or made me feel like there was a strong vibe with it. While I think enjoying this album comes mostly from enjoying the band and their music, I can say this isn't an album that would draw many people into listening.
I actually agree 100%
But curiously, the livestream that accompanied this album was probably the most epic thing they've done in a while. And the new songs are much more enjoyable in that context.

I played it non-stop too! Definitely grows on some folks over time. But hey, everyone's different and entitled to their music taste!
I actually think Mulberry street is about the exact opposite. It’s saying that everyone relies on synthetic highs and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s using synthetic highs and people who prescribe it as a metaphor for the things we do to make us happy and the people we do it with. He says “keep your bliss” and “keep your pills.” It really doesn’t seem anti pharmaceuticals at all.
🥴
He misunderstood the meanings behind most of the lyrics in this album and was unnecessarily harsh. I feel like he was looking for every reason to give it a low score and didnt really give it a fair chance because it wasn't Trench pt.2. :/ wasted review imo

@@alexanderliu9376 The like/dislike ratio is surprisingly fair on this one, I was waiting to see it the dislikes go through the roof but that shows the overall sentiment for this album is trending negatively and justifiably so. I've seen a lot of poor takes trying to treat this album like it's genius or make excuses for how sub-par and generic it is (because that's the point apparently, DEMA propaganda, it's all meant to sound Poppy and Commercial whilst the lyricism is dark...even though the lyricism and story-telling here is actually the weakest TOP have been to date and it's very surface level.)
To go from Blurryface to Trench and then to this is sad, it's a complete misfire and there are ways to make a Pop record that's not insufferable, history has proven that but the way they went about it here was just to make the most bland, generic music imaginable (Anthony comparing it to Maroon 5 really put it in perspective and now I can't get that comparison out of my head with this album, what an insult, Maroon 5 are just borderline terrible and for TOP to have made something comparable is...very sad.)
The only worse comparison after that is Imagine Dragons and nobody ever wants to ever be as borderline generic and downright bad as the kings of selling out, TOP should be lucky they didn't stoop that low.

@@dylberr Good for you man I'm happy that you love the song. And is not like I hate the song (not like Choker because that was garbage), but it was not what I wanted for a new 21 pilots record
My takeaway on mulberry street is that It’s not about meds, it’s about feeling out of place. The lyric “synthetic highs” represents how some only care about how well their social media accounts are doing, and practically need the notification of a like on a post to actually feel some sort of joy, or dopamines. The dopamines people get from social media are synthetic, a like or a reply on a post gives the brain the same stimulation of a face to face interaction but doesn’t last as long vs an actual natural interaction. the brain detects this and quickly realises that the engagement was “synthetic” thus craving for more than needed. a lot of people these days are glued to Facebook, Twitter and instagram. the feeling of been out of place is looking around and seeing you’re the only one not stuck your phone.
Nice interpretation
They really took the "I have a concept album, the concept is that it's bad" meme and made it real
Their fans took the “You don’t understand, it’s SUPPOSED to be bad!” meme and made it real

Not necessarily. We love how Tyler is becoming more happy, it’s just odd how we get a classic album like trench, and then right after we get this trainwreck
I don't think there's a lot of people that actually think this though. As someone that didn't really enjoy it, I can say it doesn´t have to do AT ALL with the fact that it's more upbeat and "happy". It's literally just very much commercial than their other ones, by far. I usually respect a lot when artists try different things, even if that means me not particularly liking the new sound. But this felt a lot like overused song formulas and almost no experimentation in my opinion. And personally, I think the lyrics are poorer as well (Again, nothing to do with Tyler being or not being depressed, I very much enjoy happy songs). I don't hate it, it's just bland and disappointing at first listen. I think it's starting to grow on me a bit though. From what I've seen most of those so-called "SAI haters" just felt the same thing as me.
@@Nyanperona21 I'm curious if this was intentional on their part. The livestream sort of supports this idea with the the hosts saying "this album is dripping with saturation!"
The upbeat songs have more of that "formulalic" (DEMA) feel while the less upbeat songs are more interesting musically. That's ballsy to commit to this DEMA storyline in this manner.
Or, this was just a weak follow up to Trench.

@a2ab totally agree, great take!
@@clunkwestweed4541 Yeah - perhaps I’m being too nit picky on the review, but I took the “educate yourself, but never too much” line in Never Take It as like saying “hey, do you’re own research and stuff, but don’t get sucked into conspiracy theories or extremism due to your biases” I guess it’s cool how we can see completely different meanings in the same line.
Never Take It is still probably my least favorite track aside from Saturday.

Yeah, I'm a bit sad that he didn't get the albums themes (although, they are cryptic but basically think The Trumanshow + Wandavision.)
To me the last song was obvious in it's themes (and Tyler talked about them as well) so, I'm sad he didn't fully get it.
Fantano has always been a stickler for albums to be approachable & self contained stories, and SAI basically mocks that idea.
It's built off of juxtaposing itself from older albums with very bright, thin, pop paint that wears away to show a miserable town controlling the people via fear. It's like a horror movie with creepy singing that was edited by the monsters to seem like a happy movie.
The live performance definitely supports this, and is super rewarding to anyone who digs into the story.
i’m honestly not entirely enamoured by SAI, but i definitely respect how ambitious this album is with its sound, contrasting trench. tyler did say he was experimenting with some new sounds, but i feel like this album is better as individual singles. however, i do enjoy the outside, shy away, saturday and mulberry street.
I disagree with the fact you said people need to be MORE educated. Tyler talks about how watching the news 24/7 will negatively affect your mental health a lot, and that the media fear mongers too much, so keep informed, but don’t be trusting and reading every bad piece of news
Yes precisely! All those people who "do their own research" are just going down rabbit holes of misinformation and get sucked so far in they forget reality

I'd never criticize a musician for putting in a lot of references or lil easter eggs in their lyrics for hardcore fans, but if your lyrics are so self referential and obscure that you have to be a die-hard fan or have done research just to understand the message of the song, you probably just wrote a bad song lmao

To me, it sounds more like you're taking the album for what it's like, and not what it is. I hear you use a lot of comparison, but not talking directly about what the songs are in their own right. For example, the awesome flute lick in bounce man, or the "keep the bliss" line in mulberry Street which breaks up the instrumentals. Instead you tend to stick the track to a specific genre and catagorize it somewhat half-assedly. Personally, I'd prefer to see you explore what makes a track unique than what doesn't; besides, songs CAN be written to embody an archetype, and not challenge it (like the Beastie Boys' fight for your right)
Yeah I feel like he was focusing too much onthe negatives and didnt give it a fair chance. It was like he was looking for reasons to give it a low score.
to be fair, the flaws in songs are what causes an album's overall score to gradually lower from a hypothetical 10/10.. so if an album's final score turns out to become lower than 5/10, it kinda makes sense to focus more on the negatives

Man I feel so upset, or confused, I really really enjoyed this album. I really enjoyed Vessel, Blurryface, Trench, and definitely S&I.
Also Mulberry Street I think is literally the perspective of DEMA, trying to convince yourself to not take medication because you’re supposed to feel horrible, or not taking medication because you’re just going to hide your feelings anyways.
Every time I listen to Mullberry Street I always think of the propaganda being “don’t take pills you should feel this!”
I’m a longtime fan and I pretty much liked the entirety of sai. The only song I can’t stand is Bounce Man (but hey, I also can’t stand The Pantaloon & Be Concerned). I loved The Outside, Never take it, choker, shy away, no chances, mulberry street & redecorate. I think a lot of people don’t like it because it’s not Trench pt. 2, but tbh I don’t understand why Trench has been put on such a high pedestal. Yes it’s a really good album, but for me it’s on par with Blurryface & Vessel which are just as good... I guess it’s all just a matter of opinion anyways so like and dislike whatever you want🤷🏽♀️
True
Yeah, I feel that. The albums all serve a different purpose. If I'm ranking it based on personal taste, it goes Trench, Vessel, Blurryface, SAI. But if I'm ranking it based on their purposes and how they're supposed to be listened to and understood, I'd rank it Blurryface, Trench, SAI, Vessel. (I don't have enough listening time with their other 2 albums.) Although I'd put them all at a 7 or higher personally. (I actually hated blurryface when it came out, and TOP as a band).
This is the problem with these music reviewers they only like indie tracks and believe they hold themselves to a higher standard they don’t like changes from the usual also you hear any of the music they put out such as devlemons ep it’s not bad but they would give it like a 8-10 just cuz it’s indie this album didn’t conform they just wanted a new sound

Honestly, I strongly disagree with your opinion about the album. Here’s why:
I’ve actually seen a lot of people criticising SAI lately and sure, everybody can have their opinion about it. Perhaps it just isn’t really your cup of tea which I respect. But I’ve seen people having such bad reasoning for their criticism and I have to debunk some of these nonsensical arguments. First off, I’m not going to say the album was “supposed to be bad” because I think that’s a shitty excuse. But I do think the album was definitely meant to be more happy sounding. I do agree that some of the songs like Saturday are perhaps a bit too poppy, but how are songs like Mulberry Street or The Outside any different than some songs from Vessel? I’m saying this because I’ve seen a lot of comments that people think it’s nothing like top’s old albums. Vessel or RAB are probably two of my fav albums from them and quite some songs from SAI remind me of them. And I also think SAI is actually very varied in style of music. Especially No Chances and Redecorate differ a lot from the rest, and have more of a Trench vibe. While the rest has more of a RAB/Vessel vibe in my opinion. And btw, the first nine songs of SAI sounding happier is also part of the storyline Tyler created. SAI tells a whole new part of the storyline which a lot of people don’t notice. And I think it’s very impressive that Tyler pulled it off to create this new part of the Dema storyline without putting himself in the same dark position he was some years ago. Ah yes, about that. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous what people are saying about that topic. Stuff like: “Their music was so much better when Tyler was struggling with depression”. WTF? As I said, maybe this album is not your cup of tea but saying things like that are really disrespectful. And another thing, the livestream from saturday makes the album even better in my opinion and makes some things more clear about the Dema story. Anyways, that’s all I wanted to get off my chest. Feel free to disagree with me and still dislike the album, but please, stop hating for stupid reasons on the album which Josh and Tyler obviously put a lot of work in.
Is this a joke or did you really just say nothing at all in all those sentences
No I totally agree. This album may not be dark but it's because Tyler is becoming a happier person and his music should reflect that and he's settling down and moving on from the "trench" that he was in. I do like trench a lot more but this album is by no means bad
@@jens2049 well instead of making a dumb remark about my comment, you could’ve also give me reasons why you disagree
@@TThief exactly!
Look, while that’s a great input for people who are more attuned to TOP and are super into them; it doesn’t mean shit to people who just simply listen to them. People don’t care about the “storyline”, they care about the music, decent lyrics, and how it sounds. Since it’s a departure from Trench, people are obviously pissed about it. SAI isn’t as great put up to its predecessors by it sounding inferior and being lyrically weaker to Trench and other work. While this can be an interlude album of sorts, most people don’t know that or care honestly. I think this review is justified because Fantano doesn’t really care about the story, it’s more on if he thinks the music is good compared to the artist’s last project. Because of SAI being compared to Trench, it was bound to get this rating.
