I was 7 back then. I remember it like this plenty of shops and businesses. That smell from the factories pumping god knows what into the air. Fine Foods (then food giant, now Morrisons). The brown and orange buses. The swimming baths that got knocked down next to the library. The indoor markets near the bus station and in the shopping mall. The town hall, paying bills at the council office inside and grabbing a pie from the bakers shop over near the railway line for lunch with my nana. Roundabouts, fountains and pigeons on the market place. You could hear the town hall clock from her house on a still day.....NOSTALGIA Thank u :)
I live in hyde and im 14 currently, my dad was born in 1975 so he was here around these times. Its strange to see hyde like this but not much has changed. Actually its better now because theres things like asda, morrisons and local takeaways like clay hut, moza, chicken hut that make this place splendid. My hometown
I think that smell was known as 'the Kingston stink' < and it did, stunk horrible; something to do with a local bone factory I think, possibly a glue factory - proper nasty it was 🤮
At 1.05 is the James North mill on the right (since replaced by a housing estate) At 1.24 is the junction with Dowson Road, since widened with the demolition of several shops. Among the little shops on the left was disabled Gordon Clarke's little shoe shop where he did repairs: he died some years ago and the vacant premises became a tattoo parlour or similar.
This was really fun to watch, brought back memories I must admit i don't miss that aweful North's factory building. Weird to see the Dowson Rd/Market St junction before it was redone, and also the road going past Woolies before it was pedestrianised, and the work to redo the layout of the road on Clark Way.
Car security technology hasn't changed very much since then but just remember it's here where I first mentioned my game changer (AVIAN KESTREL) I will soon load a demo of what this all means - no need to chase after cars again if they are stolen - so simple yet effective by 100%
Does anyone remember where Halifax was near boots before it turned into strawberry gardens fruit and veg. There was a video rental shop could have been ritz or Hollywood nights early to mid 90s I'm sure I remember one being there. Also Jack n beanstalk and blockbusters video rental on the top of market Street blockbuster changed its name to channel 21 or something like that later on because of the blockbusters in America coming over here. There's a vid on here tour of tameside 1993 or 1995 can quickly see blockbusters as the runners pass
Wish I could’ve lived in the 80s and lived in Hyde like this. Anyone here lived in the 80s in hyde? Was it a perfect era to live in hyde in the 80s? Could you go out at anytime of the day and feel safe during the 80s? Even during the night? I just wanna know. Just seeing footages from the 80s. Asked me wanna live during the 80s
Me. I was born early 70's and lived on meadow Street at 01:00. Moved to Albert Street around 1980. We would play out until it went dark and never really wandered more than 2-3 miles from home lol
Despite all the changes nothing much has changed over the years. Maybe they need to reopen the pedestrianised bit to make it easier to get around town! 😝
this is absolutely priceless😀time travel!

My lifelong friend Jim Mclavey LIVES in Norfolk st, used to visit in the 50s before moving to AUSTRALIA. Jim still lives there.

I was 5 years old but living in Texas.
Did you stop the video when you went up Victoria Street to turn around?
The video carries on to Danby Road where we visited family. The second video is the return trip back. Thanks for the interest.
A lot of that drive was my driving test route.
Less potholes and bus lanes!
No b****y speed bumps and about 40% less traffic (and people). The good old days.
Back when houses were affordable to anyone with a job.
I have tons of memories i could write about in this video. 01:09 on the right is where I spotted a white dog turd forvthe first time, around 1977
White dog turd made great chalk for use on black boards.
Looks strange with no bus station
