I use to buy classic cars for a living in California and export them to Europe incl UK. Probably around 1000 total. My knees were always dirty because I would crawl under the car to check for rust. 07:00 - its not 'just' a lead bar, it is I would suggest akin to the 'wiped joints' of an old-time craftsman plumber. 'Plumbers solder' of deliberately 33% tin and 67% lead allowed them the greatest plasticity. For any serious consideration or for any valid engineering evaluation the 'lead-tin equilibrium diagram' reveals much pertaining to this ie is essential in enabling an understanding. Basic metallurgy.
Yes, that is basic. Remember that you were watching a TV show. Most topics are very much more complex than leadwork, but on TV they're presented at a very simple level and attuned to the target audience.
As with most cars from that era, rust proofing wasn't even an optional extra. I bought a 6 yr old XJ12 in 1980 and the arches, rear valance etc were already starting to bubble paint.
My dad's 72 xj6 went to the scrap yard in the late 70s,hed already fitted wings and doors probably about 1977,its just how it was then, for all cars, I remember my uncles humber sceptre with big holes in the wings, jensens were about average for rust.
Mike brewer bought one for 5k on wheeler dealers. Not a chance was they ever going to get 80k for it. Classic cars and bikes are going through bad patch at the moment.
Hey, Drew. I have been following you for years, way before the car shows. However I am keen to buy a Triumph TR6 and wondered whether you would find, restore and sell one to me🙂, not sure how realistic my budget is but was thinking circa 25k, want it as an every day driver, not bothered whether it's lhd or rhd as I live in Spain on the Costa Blanca, anyway worth asking, I'm in no rush but want an original car? Not sure how else to get a decent one? Regards Andrew Stoppani.
Ah! My second car I bought as a youth was reg. No. NEA 289 L. A Triumph Spitfire That got wrote off after a drunken Doctor ploughed into it at a roundabout.
Drew should stick to hour long programmes about buying knackered old chairs tbh. The way he turns his nose up at anything not bone stock starts to grate. The Datsun Z came out alright but this Jensen - FFSakes just take a mirror along and look at the underside before parting with cash!
So it costs them over 70k that they admit to, probably a lot more and then go and sell it at auction for 51k and don't say how much the auction costs were, seems like good business to me!!!!
So this “expert” on cars thinks that a car that’s had the guts raked out of it by motoring journalists is going to be worth more. Perhaps that’s why they lost £19K on this one. I’ve just watched the full episode on Quest.
The ignorance staggers me. How can you fail to realise that this is all about making ab entertaining TV show that generates large amounts of money? why didn't they look underneath?

I'd hate to take that thing over a weigh bridge. If the bodywork was like that, imagine what the underneath was like?
