I used to do something similar with a small vise that cost about $5. Clamped it onto a pipe so the chains are up high and could see better. Even scribed a 45 degree line on it to help lining up the file Took a lot if practice but im happy doing it all on the bar now but it's a great idea when starting to file square

Yes. Faster. Smoother. Way harder to learn. Edge is not durable. Clean wood only. Pluses and minuses.
