Binge Eating Disorder: Vyvanse

  • “Experts” claim this relatively new “disease” affects up to 5% of adults and almost 2% of children or almost 3 million Americans. It’s defined as eating too much, too fast and suffering embarrassment afterward. Shire Pharmaceuticals, the company behind popularizing the concept of B.E.D., seeks to stimulate sales of its drug Vyvanse as the sole F.D.A. authorized drug to treat this condition. Unfortunately this pro-drug morphs into amphetamine with all of its associated toxicities. Whether Vyvanse which is also promoted for ADHD represents an advance remains debatable.

As someone who has an ED that includes binging, this is a bad video.
Uncontrollable binging can RUIN your life. Clearly you have never felt the overwhelming guilt, feelings of failure, and anxiety that accompanies an episode of binging. Writing it off as made up, especially as a medical professional that people trust, is so gross.
I actually found this video while looking for info on Vyvanse because I have ADHD.
ADHD is THE most researched psychiatric condition. Tons of studies have found that it is a real, tangible condition that can be found in the brain.
It is a condition that makes my life extremely difficult everyday. Every single thing I do, even watching tv, can be made difficult by it.
Studies have shown that for about 85% of people with ADHD, stimulant medication is helpful in treating it and doesn’t cause intolerable side effects.
To even suggest that it was made up by Big Pharma is irresponsible.
You shouldn’t be a doctor if all you want to do is ignore medical studies and make fear mongering videos

What a hack. Binge eating disorder is 100% a disorder. Are you saying bulimia isn’t real? Because bingeing is just eating like that and not throwing up. It’s real. No drug is for everyone but Vyvanse has totally changed my life. I was bingeing huge meals, like 3 fast food meals in an hour almost everyday for years. I had tried everything. I was finally diagnosed with ADHD and when I say vyvanse has been magic I’m not kidding. No bingeing at all, completely stopped. I can easily manage my home, get dishes done, laundry, I’m in better communication with my friends, it’s easier to talk and focus. The only side effect I’ve had is dry mouth sometimes which is no big deal, I just drink more water.

I’d love to hear an update from this doctor regarding new research into Vyvanse. I’ve been on it since it was approved in Australia for BED back in 2018 and I went from binging every night to maybe a mini binge once a week, my weight is now stable, I have more self confidence, I’m no longer helpless or feel hopeless and I feel more in control.

I might talk to my doctor about trying something else just because my insurance only covers part of it. It’s 188 dollars with my insurance for 30 pills. Kinda crazy price right? 480 before insurance. For 30 pills. Wtf…..what works just as well as this that isn’t so expensive?

I started this video thinking it would be informative and it’s been a while since I watched a professional sound so biased. Anyway, in case this helps anyone with BED and/or ADHD: I have suffered from this “nonexistent” disorder called BED for close to 15years, together with my ADHD that I discovered I had this past few months, have made my life absolutely miserable.
Have been on Vyvanse for a month, Previous to that I was binging almost every day (last year I relapsed) and if I wasn’t binging I was definitely overeating on meals and consuming mainly comfort foods.
This past month binges have been NON EXISTING, and I’m eating a balanced diet now and controlling portions. It has helped me tremendously! Of course with my ADHD as well. Important to note that I’ve previously been in therapy for my BED for about 4 years. This provided me with lots of tools and self awareness that together with Vyvanse it’s what’s been helping. Not sure how effective it would have been without having received therapy previously.
I’m lucky side effects are almost non existent, of course I will be careful and keep track of my health to make sure all is in order in the future, but so far the benefits vastly outweigh the issue of having a dry mouth and a couple days where I felt anxious for a little while (my experience)!

I have binge eating disorder, I used to have Anorexia and Bulimia. I think it stems from the binge/purge cycle from bulimia where you eat and purge. But because you try and not purge, you go as long as you can without eating, often eating only once a day, until you’re starving and you eat everything in sight because you denied yourself so long. Binge eating disorder is definitely very real, but I don’t think everyone with unhealthy eating habits has it. I just started vyvanse for my ADHD, and am happy to find that it should help with my binge eating disorder.

This is a very problematic video. You make many accusations that have been proven false- yet you don’t share any of that data, conveniently. I think you lost all credibility right from the get go since you can’t even pronounce this drug correctly. For the average person, I wouldn’t think twice but for someone who is trying to give out advice regarding it and using their occupation as a position of authority, it’s extremely concerning you are apparently unfamiliar with using it in practice- otherwise it would be nearly impossible for you to not know how to pronounce it. For others reading- this isn’t like some other situations where it’s just a different way of pronouncing it, but both ways said would be spelled the same. This is him completely switching letters around and saying it in a way that doesn’t even make sense the way it’s spelled.

Do you think it’s reasonable to speculate that there may be a link between BED and ADHD? If I understand correctly; patients with ADHD exhibit a lack of dopamine or proper dopamine reception, and binge eating behaviors often occur in the pursuit of dopamine. How many patients have both diagnoses?

When I got on adderall I didn't know that I cut my sugar intake to null, until I started getting hypoglycemia. Mainly cause I used sugar to raise my dopamine. It's interesting how the body works, like how a raw meat craving means that your anemic. You don't know why you are craving stuff like that, but that you should eat it because you need it.

I'm not an expert, but I've been diagnosed with both and my provider told me exactly what you're saying. That often people with ADHD can also struggle with binge eating partially because of the difficultly with impulse control, which has to do with dopamine. So yeah, from my experience pretty spot on!
